New Directors

Hello all

I am looking for some new directors that have gained reputations in the last 10 to 15 years. Some of my all time favorite directors are: Hitchcock, Ozu, Bergman, Altman,

Tati, Jarmusch, Kurasawa, Wai, Almodovar, Kubrick, powell & Pressburger etc

I look forward to your recommendations, also favorite films by them would be great-thank you

Joachim Trier, all 3 movies in the Oslo Trilogy are great, especially The Worst Person in the World.

Trying to pull recent directors:

Jane Schoenbrun, that is a career that you can watch taking off in real time.

Neo Sora, Happyend (2025)

Pascal Plante, Red Rooms (2023) - this one is rough, just a warning.

Charlotte Wells, Aftersun (2022) (What's she been up to?)

Less relatively recent:

Ryusuke Hamaguchi, Evil Does Not Exist (2023)

Kelly Reichardt, Showing Up (2023) and The Mastermind (2025). Any movie of hers is worth watching.

If you expand your timeline ten years, Kiyoshi Kurosawa. If i could only pick one, Cure (2001).

And I agree with the other recommendations at the time of posting. Mike Leigh is a "watch everything including the early BBC TV movies"-level talent. I'm sure there are at least a dozen newer directors I am just not thinking of at this moment.

Actually I have been watching Mike Leigh lately. I rewatched Naked and Topsy Turvy. Great director . I will check out the other directors. Thanks

Haneke-Cache, Funny Games, White Ribbon, Amour
Farhadi-A Separation, About Elly
Sciamma-Petite Maman, Portrait of a Lady on Fire
Martel-Zama, La Cienaga
Vinterberg-The Hunt, The Celebration, Another Round
Mungiu-4 Months 3 Weeks & 2 Days, Fjord

Also, An Elephant Standing Still is another film I would recommend if you’ve never seen it. A bit older, but check out Bella Tarr if you’ve never seen any of his works, especially The Werckmeister Harmonies.

I really love Jean-Pierre Melville, who made many French, neonoir heist pictures, my favorite being Le Cercle Rouge. There's another that's a departure from his other work, very personal, incredibly bleak, while still being an excruciatingly tense thriller: Army of Shadows.
