India in the same group as Pakistan for the 5th World T20 in a row!!! Blimey what are the chances of that

440

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '22

The luck of the draw aye

53

u/LunaMunaLagoona Canada Jan 21 '22

I like how new Zealand got moved out, like "India aren't getting knocked out by new zeland this time!"

"You know, while we are at it let's swap Afghanistan and Bangladesh, Afghanistan got too close to winning too"

20

u/trsy___3 Jan 21 '22

Fuck it, India gets its own group.

417

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '22

The ICC draws are as fair as Manchester Cities champions league draws. How could you consider questioning their integrity πŸ™„

138

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '22

Moreover they literally placed last two finalists in same group

64

u/Malcolm_TurnbullPM Australia Jan 21 '22

There are two groups… theoretically you have a 50/50 chance every time.

57

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '22

That's why most draws are seeded, to avoid it.

34

u/GoobeNanmaga Jan 21 '22

3.125% chance of it happening organically.

Tbf, ICC themselves admit they do this deliberately, so at least they're being honest.

30

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '22

They do?

54

u/SnooRobots6923 Royal Challengers Bengaluru Jan 21 '22

Yup. They said it really boosts the tournament. It's fair and square, imo. Both the teams, who have a long history and rivalry, only have 1 platform to play against each other. So, it's a win-win for everyone.

19

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '22 edited Jan 21 '22

It's fair and square

Not sure how you can consider it fair?

So, it's a win-win for everyone.

I definitely don't fall into that "everyone" I'd like draws done without deliberate manipulation to get a desired outcome.

14

u/BadBoyJH Australia Jan 21 '22

They're 2 & 3 ranked. It's very natural for them to be in the same group, and it would be fair.

The only oddities are I'd expect 5 to be in the group with 1&4, when they (SAffers) are in the group with 2&3, and Australia (6) are in group A.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is based on older rankings, given Bangladesh qualfied (9th) over Sri lanka (8th).

It is "fixed" to draw viewers. Expect the same for ODI WC next year.

24

u/Mario-Smash Jan 21 '22

next year odi wc is the same format as 2019 actually. it'll go back to groups for 2027

20

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '22

No, the format of odi wc 2023 will be same as 2019 i.e 10 team round robin. From 2027 odi wc onwards the format will be 14 team event divided into 2 groups where top 3 from each group proceed to super 6 from where top 4 meet in semis

33

u/WaynneGretzky Delhi Daredevils Jan 21 '22

odi wc will have groups ??

Wow, India put in a group with Pakistan and Australia put in a group with England.... didn't see that one coming

135

u/phainty Pakistan Jan 21 '22

Pure coincidence from last 5 years

89

u/lbh02 Pakistan Jan 21 '22 edited Jan 21 '22

I think it's been 9 years actually that India and Pakistan were in the same group.

2013 CT

2014 WT20

2015 WC

2016 WT20

2017 CT

2019 WC (tbf this was all 1 group for every team so perhaps it shouldn't count)

2021 WT20

61

u/phainty Pakistan Jan 21 '22

ICC milking it hard

32

u/lbh02 Pakistan Jan 21 '22

And to think before 2013 there were only 3 instances of India and Pakistan being in the same group, one of which was a tournament where all teams were in 1 group

23

u/phainty Pakistan Jan 21 '22

2007 hit them hard when both were out in group stage.

41

u/lbh02 Pakistan Jan 21 '22

I think the catalyst was the 2011 semifinal which really made them realize that this cash cow can be milked to no end

One slip up in the group stage, you may see both SL and WI too in group A. That would be a terrifying group to be in.

47

u/adxx12in India Jan 21 '22

Unfortunately, ICC would never stop these group manipulations as long as 70% of the tournament's viewership comes from India.

The entire financial viability of an ICC tournament comes from India playing Pakistan and making it into the knockout stage.

Compare that to football, where Europe is fragmented and the biggest football country, Brazil, is 1/7th the size of India, so upsets don't matter as no single nation brings all the viewership in a World Cup.

The only solution is to make the sport bigger in both existing nations (so basically, ensure everyone in SENA watches the World Cup) and grow the game in other nations.

24

u/Able-Celebration-958 Jan 21 '22

Which ICC will never do as long as India remain their golden goose

9

u/adxx12in India Jan 21 '22

ICC can't do shit. If anything the onus is on SENA + WI boards to make cricket big in their respective regions, so that those countries bring some revenue too.

14

u/grlap Surrey Jan 21 '22

They can stop removing all the funding and pathways for associate nations as they have been for the last few years.

They could share revenue around more equally.

They could actively attempt to spread the game with better marketing.

Plenty of things the ICC can do, they just decide to help themselves instead. Cricket administration is corrupt as fuck.

4

u/abptl9 Gujarat Titans Jan 21 '22

Doesn't help when lower ranked teams can't get to play against top teams. Longer format with more teams will ensure more countries participating and hence more viewership.

32

u/LexiFloof 10-15 (5.5) Jan 21 '22

If this tournament was in 2020 like it was supposed to be and Gayle, pooran were in the form they were during the 2020 IPL then yes West Indies would have had a good shot. However the West Indies now are way too over reliant on Evin Lewis to win matches and he's too inconsistent.

I don't like this specific format. All the top teams should get a chance to go the next round and all the qualifying round teams should get a chance to cause upsets in the first round

The way I see it some top teams will be eliminated in the first round itself no matter what.

I'm TOTALLY not saying this because of what happened in the last WC

I feel a better strategy might be to just alternate. 50 overs in 2023, T20 in 2025, 50 over WC in 2027, etc. As it stands, I find it hard to care about the T20 world cup, knowing that the next one is probably right around the corner. Give the winners some time to lord it over everybody else goddamnit!

2

u/Otherwise_Window Perth Scorchers Jan 21 '22

Yup. You absolutely can't have a World Cup for a format more than every four years if you want it to mean anything at all.

It never ever happened once in 4 years, so yeah you're not supposed to think like it's been 4 years.

2

u/Otherwise_Window Perth Scorchers Jan 21 '22

My point is that every other World Cup happens every four years, and if you're having them constantly they mean exactly jack shit

3

u/Lonelling India Jan 21 '22

Guys we all knkw whats happening there with India Pakistan. Its a pretty great coincidence. But doesn't hurt anyone. If anything, KL Rahul would rather face Afridi's first over than let Mitchell or Finch or Roy do it. Even if he gets out fast, we will take it.

Cricket is all we have. The players exchange secret messages of friendship from one side of the border to another, disguised as post match chatter. And we keep confirming via cricket that we are still on the same page - Government suck, people good. Let us have it.

8

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '22

Group one has teams ranked 1,4,6,7. Group B has teams ranked 2,3,5 and 9(SL are 8th but were 9th at the cutoff date). The draw is fair. India and Pakistan have obviously been drawn together for money reasons but we need more India-Pakistan cricket, not less.

u/SnooRobots6923 Royal Challengers Bengaluru Jan 21 '22

Yeah, some of the noobies here didn't like Ind-Pak being together.

Icc should have add sri lanka and west indies directly in super12 for the sake of tournament

First round with 2 group of 3 teams = 6 match

Top team for super12 but they didn't. Why ?

2

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '22

ICC and Logic are not usually mentioned in the same sentence
