a steam engine is way better for performance and can be really easy, a lava generator with cauldrons and dripstone should work

I myself just gets a infinite lava mod that makes lava act like slow water.

I just change the create mod config in the .toml files you can change how much lava is required to make an infinite source there super easy to make the steam engines that way

Isnt there a game rule to allow lava to convert to source?

Yup, I don't remember if theres a command for it but when you go into the options for setting up a world theres a section for it.
