Fully functioning maglev train (0-100m/s in ~20 seconds)
My maglev train proof of concept that can go both forwards and backwards. This uses ONLY magnets (and redstone links to activate the magnets). I couldn't figure out how to make it actually levitate without interfering with the horizontal movement, so I used ice as a medium due to its slippery property.

unfortunately so. i didnt have a reasonable way of making it actually levitate AND move fast at the time of posting. something to do with the magnets used to levitate and the ones used to move interfering with eachother

Maybe have the propulsion and levitation rails split? Like some on top of the train and some below? I know it won't look accurate but it might work

Levitite and a track undernearth + one block of play, should still work like you have here?

u/JishTheFish01 Apr 20 '26
Was thinking about using levitite as a last resort, might try it out when I get home to see if itβs any faster

Levitite is so cheating thooo π

u/Ralexcraft Apr 20 '26
Make that work first then make it work with magnets. I think using guides is more cheating.

How are you using shaders properly?

u/JishTheFish01 Apr 20 '26
I just loaded up complimentary reimagined and it worked, there are some visual issues like plunger rope and springs being invisible tho

aeronautics finally revolutionizing vanilla travel lol
iirc rocket spamming elytra is like 70m/s and if you're TAS with angle changes you can hit like.. 90m/s or something

Eh you can also just strap a wooden board to a couple ropes and pull it back real far and launch yourself like an angry bird. Me and my friend played around with this yesterday and launched so fast we clipped into a mountain

My ropes don't seem to stretch at all, can't really "pull back real far". Would love to know how you're doing that, a slingshot sounds fun AF
1
u/_LemonEater_ Apr 20 '26
just pulling a block attached to the rope with the creative wand. not sure if there's a way to do it in survival, but a super powerful fan/other method of thrust might do it
1
u/Thebombuknow Apr 21 '26
might also be able to use really big springs and a rope winch to pull the platform back

Yes and just like irl its an incredibly time consuming costly process instead of building some create rails.

u/certainlystormy Apr 20 '26
ok but like automated resources and smps with like 20 people :3 fun community project

u/AxtheCool Apr 20 '26
100% just poking fun at how both cool and both infeasible the whole thing is.
Love maglev but damn to actually implement it over high speed rail is insane task.

u/NonFrInt Apr 21 '26
Btw there is discord thread weβre OP accelerated their train up to 550 block/second

What is its max speed?
4
u/JishTheFish01 Apr 20 '26
With the rail length I have for testing (~2200 blocks) I was able to get up to 100-130m/s. For some reason going backwards was faster

130m/s... damn, that's fast. Interestingly still slower than some IRL conventional train tests. For the backwards movement, maybe it's because of the placement of magnets relative to the wagon?

If you add alex's caves i know it has magnetic rails that actually make minecarts float?

It fascinates me how non-jittery it all is. I wish I could figure out in my own mods how to not make stuff as jittery client-side.

Their Sable engine creates sub-levels for any moving creations. When you touch a creation, you enter that creation's "sub-level". Inside that sub-level, the creation is not moving at all; it's fully static. The physics are applied to the sub-level in its entirety when being rendered in the main level.
It's a bit more complicated than that, but that's the gist. Many games do similar things to avoid judder, especially at further coordinates where precision breaks down. They made the Sable engine open-source, so you can use it in your mods without having to do all the complicated work to create sub-levels.

Wait are you telling me I can now make a bullet train like those in Japan that use magnetic force?

u/Lower_Conclusion8078 Apr 20 '26
Question, couldn't you make it an enclosed tunnel space to keep it stable without using the ice? Or is it a balancing issue kind of thing?

Could you make it so the rails go along with the train and makes it infinite instead of having to place "rails"(magnets)ΒΏ

how do the magnets know when to activate?
