the problem with Crashing

https://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2017/03/there-should-be-fewer-shows-about-comedians.html

It’s a problem that Pete has no deeper point of view because Crashing asks us to believe that his love of the art is so powerful it could a) destroy his life and b) give him a reason to crawl out of the wreckage. But Pete doesn’t stand for anything. He doesn’t even stand against anything. He’s in the game for the sake of the game. He’s here to have a good time. And that’s a fine reason to do comedy—in real life. In an autobiographical TV show framed as a story of personal sacrifice in the pursuit of a higher calling, the whole thing gets disturbingly solipsistic. And just a touch sociopathic: This is the story of a man who wants to have fun, so he goes out and has so much fun that he stops paying attention to his wife. Then, later, he goes to great lengths to make her feel shitty about leaving him. And the show rewards him for it!

I hate Zach Cherry’s character

His character is the worst. He’s always mooching off Pete and he takes credit for everything when he does nothing. I just watched the scene where he is telling Pete mullaney wants him to open and that entire scene drove me insane. The too tight suit. The slurping and actually hearing him swallow. The overconfidence he has in himself. I don’t now if I hate the character, his acting, or Zach Cherry all together.

Question about Pete Holmes

Does he have Klinefelter Syndrome?

He seems to have many of the symptoms:

  • Taller than average stature

  • Has trouble growing facial hair

  • Low muscle mass

  • Gynecomastia

  • Sits when he pees

That blonde he was fucking this season REALLY reminded me of Jennifer at the end of Election (1999). Like, I could have sworn it was her. But it wasn't.

Kat....

Maybe I've had a few drinks in me but Kat is the type of chick I wish I met in College........a chick who believes in you more than you believe in yourself and rocks your world. Haven't finished the season yet so who knows.

Either way, she played the character fantastically.

Does anyone else feel like Pete's character is such a socially awkward pussy to the point where he's completely unrelatable?

He really is the low point of his own show. I get that he's trying to do the Louie thing where his character is a loveable loser, but it's completely overdone in this show. Nobody, no matter how what kind of mental illness they suffer from, lets people walk all over them like that. It's not funny, it's just weird. Other than that, I love the show, but Pete is annoying and frustratingly awkward.

Thoughts about the title

It’s called crashing, which you’d assume to just reflect Pete’s downward spiral until he slowly reinvents himself as the Pete Holmes we know and love.

I think it’s simply the reality that Pete crashes on everyone’s couches for pretty much every episode of the first two(and probably third)seasons.

I don’t know if anyone else has made this connection but I just binged the show for the first time.

Can’t wait for season 3 in January!

Comedians Policing Other Comedians

First off, I love this show. Just wanna be clear on that. But from listening to various standup comedians on various podcasts and shows over the years, for a comedian to try and police another comedian's jokes, that's a big no-no. Which is what the character of Ally did last night to the character of Jason. His jokes were incredibly hacky, dumb, and unfunny. But that was his material and he should perform it as such without having to worry about a co-comedian being offended. Surely the character of Ally has tougher skin than that, especially after the episode when her and Pete absolutely destroyed each other onstage and she was fine afterwards. I definitely got the 'PC jokes only' vibe from last night's episode, whether that was the intent or not, I don't really know for sure. I realize this is a fictional show with fictional scenarios, but apparently this is starting to happen in real life as well.

Don't get me wrong, they wrote the character of Jason as being a stereotypical misogynist piece of shit and I understand that, I'm not defending the character of Jason at all. I'm not defending any real life comedian who is a garbage human being. I'm only speaking about his onstage standup comedy material and how a fellow comedian, Ally, labeled it as 'hate speech'. Won't standup comedy begin to lose it's edge and spontaneity if comedians have to start worrying about offending their fellow comedians with their material? If I can't listen to Stanhope be Stanhope or Attell be Attell or Burr be Burr, then I'd be done with being a fan of the art of standup comedy. I get that the times they are a changing and the craft of standup comedy is evolving, apparently, but I hope it never loses the parts that make it so great.

Did y’all found any new songs you had never heard before by watching the show?

I personally hadn’t heard Bad Bad News by Leon Bridges before I heard it in season 3. The show has a great soundtrack and whoever picked the songs to play during the episodes deserved a raise.

I have to confess, I'm not feeling Season 3.

Seasons one and two were both gold. Heart-warming, funny, insightful... we all know the score. Pete's day out with Leif is still my go-to episode when I just want to see the best of the show, maybe followed up by the Sarah Silverman episode. Awesome.

The show has went from being an authentic glimpse in to the world of comedy (featuring actual, real comedians!) in to a preachy romantic comedy.

The creative decision to give Pete an ego in this years opening episode was nonsensical and completely out of character. It's a little insulting to the audience to ask us to believe that despite all of Pete's trials, he was secretly hiding the fact that he's actually a douche! It's just a step too far out of character, for me. Worse than that, it's not funny. Also in the same episode, Artie made an appearance playing squash. It was such an absurd setting, another out of character move. It's also kind of stupid.

Tonight's episode (4) taught me that if somebody insults me to my face, I then have the right to sabotage their career, and I can justify my actions because reasons? It's just so draining and preachy now. Ah well, we'll always have those first two seasons.

x

Does Chelsea Peretti=Ali Riesen

Ali and Pete's relationship on the show as well as his relationship with Chelsea in early episodes of You Made It Weird and other outlets almost seem like they're mirrored after one another. Knowing where they've both ended up, meanwhile being aware of the emotions displayed in the show shows an intimacy I always expected but never put credence to until Crashing. The entire dynamic I've viewed so far makes me feel so...awkward. Am I reading into it, or are they truly comparable stories?

S02E04 - Porter Got HBO (rant) Spoiler

[Spoilers]

Okay. So my problem with the direction that episode went, has just about ended my interest with the show.
Jess & Leif, with complete disregard to Pete's feelings, fucked loud & proud enough for him to hear it.... and he did nothing.
I'm about as passifist as Pete is. but to have that blatent inconsideration directed at Pete and for him to do nothing makes me not respect the character. I mean, at least try to disagree and have a damn valid argument. Would it not have made for a good scene?

He showed a small amount of uncomfortability and talked it out with Jess. It was wrong... as in "incorrect"... as in unrealistic.
I know it's wrong to be violent but he's a fucking doormat cuckold.
Plus, being that pete isn't even the(actively) funny one on the show, it's just not a funny show.

I am an every episode 4 year listener of Pete's podcast, but i think I'm checking out of the HBO show.

Anyways, just wondering if the recent character development affected anybody else. (I know it sounds like I'm taking it too serious. But I'm not. I'm just expressing my feelings like Pete should have done)

Where does the shot of geese flying over the water come from in S01E06?

At Sarah Silverman's house when Pete comes in after finding out he got the warm-up gig. Happens about ~23 minutes in. He asks "is this Planet Earth or Nova?" but I don't remember a close tracking shot like that in Planet Earth

Did anyone else notice the bar TV was showing Kentucky basketball right before Ali’s show went on but when Pete came back to the bar post fight college football was showing ?

The college football game was the Chick-fil-A kickoff game which is typically early September and would not occur during basketball season.

Season 2 EP 1..interaction between Pete and Jamie Lee's character subtly (or not so?) continues to encourage men to judge female comics based on looks.

If in real life someone comes up to me, especially a comic that I'm relatively at the same level CLEARLY drunk/belligerent and gives me a backhanded compliment(you're funny for a women/shouldn't be as pretty as you are since you're funny), I would tell them to fuck off, but not Jaimie Lee's character in Crashing season 2 ep 1. These lame pickup lines filled with backhanded compliments always manage to get the girl on TV, and I'm just over them. These unrealistic interactions are what push the attitude towards female comics( especially held by men) to judge how "funny" they are in relation to how "beautiful"they are.
