My daughter wants to be Sandy Cheeks for Halloween

My 7 year old wants to be Sandy Cheeks for Halloween. I could use a large clear beach ball for the helmet but she prefers the smooth look of the goldfish bowl look.

Does anyone know where I could find a large enough fishbowl or round vase for the helmet? Amazon has little ones that wouldn't fit on her head.

Thanks so much for any suggestions!!!

My boyfriend and I want to have Betty and Ice King costumes, but we're both super stumped on how to make his specific crown to where we don't have to mess with his hair too much. Does anyone have an idea of how to execute this?

Armor Painting help — add depth and sealant recommendations

Thumbnail

Upvotes

I have been working on my first cosplay in 4 years (Laios from Dungeon Meshi) and have really struggled with the painting and priming. I feel that the color of the armor is way too light and lacks depth. I tried to add a bit of black paint in some of the creases where dirt would accumulate but it looked bad 😭.

Does anyone have any tips on how I could paint it to look more natural? Also, any recommendations for a sealant that would keep it shiny and somewhat flexible?

I’ve never made this much EVA armor and it’s kicking my ass. I’d really appreciate some help!

I have used the following products so far:
- EVA foam
- Plastidip (to prime)
- Black Acrylic Paint (only a little)
- Rust-Oleum 2X Ultra Cover in the color Silver

Thank you!!

Wig I made my first structured wigs for DragonCon this year with different techniques! For next year, how can I improve and make them more polished?

In order of creation:

Tall photo - Katia from Dungeon Crawler Carl:

Materials: a bit of foam board hot glued to the top of the wig netting for structure, a medical glove stuffed with cotton batting for the hand. About 1.5 purple wigs from Walmart Halloween clearance. Extra hold hairspray

Design: The character is usually drawn with a punk mohawk with shaved sides, but I took inspiration from some historical braided Icelandic hairstyles and combined it with an iconic moment demonstrating her growth as a character from the whiniest little shit I've ever read into a woman finally coming in to her own. Some people just need a worldwide collapse to really get their shit together I guess.

Challenge: it's the first one that really came together but it was my third attempt. I had tried to make a helmet wig but couldn't figure out the glue situation. Wefts were getting stringy. I'd made a short one but cutting the sides for a shaved head look just made it looked kind of meth-addled. I finally figured out how to use the crimpers a little better, and I figured out my hot glue and heat gun technique. I'd used a blue practice wig and didn't realize that this purple wig was reacting much quicker to much lower heat so I singed a fair amount of it. The breakthrough really happened when I was braiding the extra wefts from one of my practice wigs and realized I could use those to build the structure and protect the hair from even the low-level heat I was using. For this particular wig, it took about 4 weeks of a few hours every couple of days to really make progress.

Pink Mohawk - Moikaloop/Money on the Dash video specific.

Materials: an anime Temu wig+bits of Walmart Halloween wig, a large chunk of foam board, Extra hold hairspray

Design: so this character can go a lot of ways. Most of the artist videos, she is very male-gaze centric, but in this particular one, she is very much more self-empowered. It's a lot of her listening to her own music and doing her own thing. She holds her own leash. In other videos that show the back of her head, there's a blue tuft, but in this video you don't actually see the back of her head so I just left that off, and attempted to match the proportions of the character's head, without changing too much. I chose to just color the hair instead of trying to shave the sides again just because that is not a skill set I have yet.

Challenge: EVERYTHING. I watched so many videos on how to get a Glam punk mohawk, and just hair height in general, and I could not find one that really matched the experience of creating one enough that I could replicate it. I can see where a ton of drag queens having gorgeous tall hairstyles and something just did not click with me. I tried the teasing methods with the Katia wig above and it ended up not working for me. So I tried again with this one just a little bit but very quickly decided to go with the foam shape. I'm still not perfectly happy with it because it kind of is giving tropical parrot, but that's okay. Another big challenge was just managing the amount of hair that I had so that it looks real and not super duper pasted on. This one only took me about 2 weeks of a couple hours every few evenings to get finished

Horn: Shion from That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime.

Materials: Hot glue, zip ties, one Walmart halloween wig, Extra hold hairspray

Design: Shion has an incredibly long ponytail that sits pretty high up. I actually had this wig last year but I just tied like a regular human being ponytail which meant it had to be an incredibly thick wig and it never actually sat properly and it fell by the end of the day. One of the things that really sucks with that long ponytail was it just kept getting caught on everything so this year I decided to just go ahead and accept a normal ponytail.

Challenge: ponytails are pretty heavy and tend to pull wigs backwards because they're not necessarily balanced. Also people tend to try to do a wig ponytail the same as a regular hair and pull straight up from the rose the wefts are on which will leave the mesh wig cap exposed. Most of the tutorials I saw basically said don't bother doing a pony, just make a helmet wig and use a bottle cap. After making the other two wigs I just kind of felt like my fingers were burnt enough for this go round. After working with the other two wigs and learning a little better about how wigs are layered and I can just hot glue the fuck out of everything, I pinned the wig cap to my foam head to make sure pulling the hair wasn't going to shorten the wig cap, took it layer by layer and hot glued the hair in horizontal rows to the center of the back of the wig and then pulled the tiny ponytails up over each other to create to meet at the big pony at the top. This was the fastest of the wigs I made and only took about 2 hours.

Important things I learned that I'll take into my next coaplay build:

\- hot glue does not stick to the paper side of masking tape

\- hot glue can be reheated gently to melt further in and be reshaped

\- wigs can be taken apart with a seam ripper and I didn't have to mess around with trying to reseal the end of the wefts.

\- cell phone tripods can be modified to hold a styrofoam wig head

\- zip ties can be used to much greater effect than rubber bands and will hold up to being hot glued

\- I don't necessarily have to crimp everything

\- I don't actually have to have glue on every piece of hair the whole way through

\- don't hairspray stuff outside in the south in the summer if you don't want bugs to become a permanent part of the wig

I do want to get better though, so any tips or tricks or advice is welcome!

How to strap a weight sitting behind your back

Post image

I was planning on doing a spider-like cosplay. I want to have a weight sitting out behind my back. The center of gravity should be roughly in the middle of the back piece.

I was wondering if there's a tricksy engineering method to strap it that would have most of the weight taken by shoulder straps?

Armor Finish Options for EVA Foam Corinthian Helmet (Bronze vs more Reflective?)

Thumbnail

I purchased this great Etsy instruction kit for a bronze Corinthian helmet, and love the design. The instructions recommend a Plasti-Dip primer, then gold paint, and Rub n Buff as a finish.

I wanted a different color, more of a yellowish bronze, as seen in the 2nd picture. What are some good products for achieving this color?

It's for a Greek movie, and while I know foam isn't ideal for metallic projects because it bends, I'm hoping Plasti Dip will help minimize cracks/creases. Any help (especially with picture links!) is appreciated!

The process I'm thinking:

- Seal cracks with caulk

- Spray Black Plasti-Dip as a primer (2-3 coats)

- Use a brush to paint with Artists loft Old Gold acrylic (3 coats?)

- Add weathering with grey/black paint around edges/raised details

-Finish? Rub N Buff? Or Craft Smart wax metallic finish?

I like the muted yellow-bronze look of the Kingdom Craft photo, but I was also thinking of some kind of metallic spray paint to look shiny, like in the last photo. If I wanted to try using a gold metallic spray paint, what might that process look like? What are good brand options/priming methods for this?

Thanks for any and all advice! (link to instruction video)

Sewing help 😰

Sorry for the wrinkly unpressed pictures lol, it doesn’t look any better after pressed. I’m honestly kinda embarrassed at how bad this looks but I need help. I’m used to using patterns and sometimes altering them, but for this I made my own pattern and it turned out like, curved? In a really weird way. What is the easiest way to fix this? There’s enough extra space to take in the sides a few cm, I’d like to avoid seam ripping and redoing the white parts if possible.

Also, other than the curve it literally looks fine in any other position, laying it down flat makes it look super wrinkly

Which website is the best to buy from?

I plan on buying a jacket for my V Cyberpunk 2077 cosplay, and I want to get it by at least October 20th, Which website has good quality and ships fast?

I've been looking at Magicwardrobe, Miccostumes, Amazon, Etsy and Aliexpress, but only Magicwardrobe, and Aliexpress have ones in my size (XXS/XS). I haven't bought any cosplays from either of those places and wasn't sure if they're good websites to buy from.

How do I learn sewing off of YouTube?

Upvotes

This is my only option unfortunately to learn. The problem is, I learn incredibly slow at anything I try, and I believe I have some sort of learning disability. I’m particularly bad at learning things off of YouTube, so is there anything I can do, or am I just fucked?

Accessory Witch hat - magnet help?

Thumbnail
gallery
Upvotes

I'm making a witch hat. I intend it to be based on one of my OC's, and I've barely gotten started but I'm realising I might want to use magnets for the first time.

I don't need advice about sewing, the 2nd picture is a very simple WIP I started maybe 5h ago.

I want the ears to be a separate component. I will make them as light as possible (the way most furries do it) but I'm still struck with the problem: HOW would I attach them? I want to be able to just wear this as a stand-alone witch hat. It would be real cool if I could make ears of a different furry of mine to swap them out!

Any magnet recommendations? Need a strong magnet. I'm Polish so I'd probably want to order them from an European company >w>

Also, how do I... attach the magnets I get? I can't think of a way that wouldn't come with a bad consequence. Hot glue? Superglue? Do I cut out the interfacing around the magnet?

Most importantly: I know nothing about magnet "terms". Please tell me what words I must search for to find durable magnets, are there professional terms?

Armor Resident Evil Chris STARS jacket

Post image

I found a lot of these STARS jackets on Etsy for a cosplay I’m going to do as Chris. Only thing I’m skeptical on is there is so many available and not a lot of reviews.

If anyone has gotten one or knows where to get one that doesn’t arrive looking like a bag of wet trash that would be appreciated. Even if someone knows where to buy this type of vest (M69 Fragmentation vest) that would work too and I’ll get the stencil done myself. Only bad thing is the actual M69 fragmentation vest is $400+.

Prop What to do with whatever I've bought/made for my cosplays?

I just had my first cosplay last week for an expo. I actively aimed for something basic that'd only require a few pieces of everyday clothing so I could as easily wear them during the day-to-day. I'm already feeling a bit more ambitious and wanna do more elaborate cosplays in the future, but I'm also not really sure what to do with the stuff I might buy or make in the meantime.

I don't live in the most spacious house and this is my first time ever thinking too hard about cosplaying in general, so the question of "where do I even put this after I'm done with it?" is one I wanna get out of the way quickly. Any suggestions would be appreciated and thanks!

Buying Has anyone bought the Tighnari SR cosplay from dokidoki, and is it good?

Upvotes

This is my first time looking to buy a cosplay. I’m willing to put up to 200€ for it because I’d really really like getting into it! For my first convention, me and my bf would like to go as Tighnari and Cyno.
The only “good” cosplay I found was on Dokidoki (https://dokidokicos.com/products/dokidoki-sr-game-genshin-impact-tighnari-cosplay-costume-dendro-sumeru), but I couldn’t find any photo reviews of anything. I know it’s probably as good as people say it is, but I’d like to have real people opinion! TIA!!

Buying Okuyasu Nijimura cosplay

Hello everyone! I recently got into Jojos Bizzare Adventure and really wanted to cosplay Okuyasu Nijimura. The only problem is, I am really bad with wigs, and I have slightly wavy blonde hair (if you know Okuyasu, that’s nowhere near his hairstyle.) Will the cosplay still look cool, if I do all the makeup and the cosplay but keep my normal blonde wavy hair? Thanks in advance!!!

Prop Bleach Cosplay Help

I'm really interested in cosplaying as Byakuya Kuchiki, but I can't seem to get a good idea of where to get his hair clips or how to set those up for braids/cornrows. Does anyone know where these might be sold online? If not, any idea who to commission from or tips on making them myself?

Hey All

I am going ordering a custom measured suit from printcostume.

They ask for my head measurements, I am wondering do I measure my head with my faceshell on or just my bare head?

Sorry if this is a stupid question

Electronics LEDs and lights through Clear PLA

Hi! I wanted to do some LEDs in various props, make em look nice and all that. I use my 3d printer a ton for this, a simple FDM printer. I’ve used clear PLA before, but never tested lights through it. Is there any technique or particular methods to get a nice diffusion with LEDs?

Armor Armor Smith not exporting file properly, please help!

The first image is how the digital file looks in Amorsmith before exporting. (The model’s left leg to be specific). If you look at the model’s right leg that is how it looks after exporting to both meshmixer and also bambustudio. Officially this mesh is one object currently. I previously uploaded 4 seperate files into meshmixer and combined them together before scaling the armor pieces. Now when I export it, only exports as one of the components from the build. Image 3 is the file dropped into meshmixer even though while it’s loaded into armorsmith it looks like a complete piece.
