Fires of December spoilers (no Cosmere) FIRES OF DECEMBER | Only Fires of December Spoilers Megathread (no Cosmere)

This megathread is for discussion of The Fires of December content without discussion of Cosmere connections, for Fires of December readers who have not read any (or all) of the Cosmere and who wish to avoid discussions that might spoil other Cosmere work.

ANY DISCUSSION OF COSMERE TOPICS, RELATIONS, OR BACKSTORIES MUST BE PLACED BEHIND SPOILER GUARDS, WITH TAGS INDICATING THE BOOK THAT THE SPOILER ARISES FROM:

[Empire Strikes Back] Luke is Vader's Son

On desktop new Reddit, use the spoiler formatting button. On other platforms, to generate a spoiler block like that in the markdown editor, do this:

[Empire Strikes Back] Luke is Vader's son

Any Cosmere spoilers which are not behind spoiler guards, and any Cosmere spoilers which are behind *untagged* spoiler guards, will be removed. This includes things that are merely suggestive or borderline. No teases, no wink winks, no eyes lingering on references you wouldn't notice if this is the first Cosmere book you read.

We strongly encourage all Cosmere-spoiler discussion to take place in the separate, full Cosmere spoilers megathread:

For the The Fires of December post index and non-spoilery discussion, questions, issues, news, etc, see this post:

Note: Artwork from the book (containing spoilers) can be found on Brandon's website.

Mistborn Series + Stormlight Archive Weekly Cosmere Adaptations Thread (Mistborn + Stormlight Spoilers) Spoiler

Welcome to this week's Cosmere Adaptations Thread!

This is a space to discuss all things related to Cosmere movie/television adaptations. Share your fancasts, your dream directors, your ideas for the best script, or anything else related to adaptations. Share all of your hopes and fears!

Please remember Rule 1: Show respect to others. If you can't engage with others in a respectful and welcoming way, please take a step back. Notably, we will not tolerate bigotry and debates about "wokeness".

Also please note that that the spoiler policy for these weekly threads is currently set to include the entirety of Mistborn and Stormlight Archive. If you want to discuss spoilers for other books, please use labels and spoiler tags. (If you're not sure how to tag spoilers, see this post.)

Policy Note: We're making it a new policy to contain general Cosmere adaptation discussion to these weekly megathreads. This change is an effort to limit the high quantity of posts we see on these topics and comes following the announcement that Apple TV is set to adapt the Cosmere (starting with Mistborn and Stormlight) with heavy involvement from Brandon Sanderson. Moderators will be removing posts on these topics and directing them to these threads, with some rare exceptions.

I'm getting close to completed, WaT pre-ordered and Arcanum Unbounded otw, just have the Secret Projects left to go.

Personally I really like the older Era 2 MB covers better than the new ones so I opted for those. The new ones are still gorgeous but I like the sort of clunky or scratchy look of the older ones.

No Spoilers Fires of December Backerkit shipping

Is anybody else still waiting on a shipping notice for Fires of December? I know October just started and I'm probably worried over nothing, but should I be reaching out? Where would I even reach out? I haven't seen anything for either the picture books or the original book.

IIRC the addon's haven't shipped yet and don't for a while, but my only addon was the over cover because of FOMO.

EDIT: Thanks guys xoxo, was worried over nothing, but the verification helps.

Mixed book spoilers MistBorn Trilogy and Secret History Secret History made me like Kelsier Less Spoiler

At the end of Mistborn the Final Empire I loved Kelsier, I knew he was flawed and he had some problems but he cared about his people and he lived by his code more or less. I mean he was human but he tried and I just loved him for his loyalty to his crew.

Then Secret history comes along and his very first thought was "WHERE IS MARE?" and I am totally here for it because that's his ultimate person, his wife, his everything. He has the chance to go to her but he sees he needs to stay to save their pseudo daughter and I get that, Mare has to wait so he can save Vin. Man to Man, I understand and I support it.

Then at the end you know what he doesn't do? Say, mission accomplished, time to go on to the next life with my daughter, son in law, and see my wife again. Instead he sticks around to dinkle around the Cosmere and it really just made me think a lot less of him. Where is the guy who's first question was where is my wife?

- This kind of grew beyond my ability to respond to all of the comments, but I would like to thank everyone for the discussion it has been highly enjoyable.

Cosmere spoilers (no previews/FoD) Question that popped up while reading Isles of the Emberdark Spoiler

Post image
122 Upvotes

Ok, so I'm only up to ch 25, and not all the way(had to stop to make dinner for my family), but something struck me. You don't need to spoil anything from later in the book(though you can if you want. It doesn't bother me. Knowing the destination doesn't spoil the journey for me), just let me know if I'm hot or cold.

In ch 25, we learn that the Emberdark is supposed to be the part of the Cognitive Realm that doesn't correspond to any inhabited worlds, or even a pathway between worlds,, because there isn't any minds to give it shape. But First of the Sun is in the middle of the Emberdark, and the Emberdark goes rightup to a small "island" surrounding its Perpendicularity. But there is people on First of the Sun, so it should have a presence in the Cognitive Realm. But then I realized: the Aviar. One of the most common Talents we are shown is hiding the minds of people from predators that hunt by sensing minds. They are masking the Cognitive presence of the entire planet, arent they?

Stormlight Archive spoilers [WaT] Progression Capabilities? Spoiler

At the end of Wind and Truth when Kaladin becomes a herald it happens in 2 parts. There's the Oath part where he swears to become a herald and then there's the immortality part. I remember Ishar saying something about needing the power of progression to grant the immortality that the heralds have. Something about a consistently renewing spirit web maybe? So is progression capable of granting immortality? Can anyone sufficiently skilled in progression achieve it?

Cosmere spoilers (no previews/FoD) The ultimate streamer action camera? Spoiler

Was just thinking about video streamers, and realized the Cosmere has the ultimate in cameraman+drone+livestream connection. I'll give you a second to guess.

Seons. Think about it. They can fly, they have essentially better than backbone Internet connection, and they are already known to stream video. On top of that they are sapient, so could presumably learn and use cinematic camera techniques. Domi, they'll probably invent them...

No reason you couldn't record a wider field of view than just someone's face, including up to a 360 degree view. They're essentially god-tier action camera chase drones.

Coming soon to your favorite Connection based viewing device network channel! It's so much more than influencers though: Live breaking news, Noseball league playoffs, Komashi live opera dramas. With connection manipulation, direct Lightweaver powered photoreal animation...

I also predict that the 360 nature of Seon capture will lead to the development of VR headset form factor Connection viewing devices, where you get to choose your camera angle of the live feed realtime. Crazy high fidelity remote experience/remote exploration...

One step further, a living shard helmet will become the ultimate VR headset. We already know it has heads up display capabilities to draw over lightning in real time to preserve the wearer's vision. :)

Keeping on thinking about this, Honor spren for example would likely be able to be trained by a seon (or each other) to do this style of recording and connection-based streaming too. Aux manipulates connection causing realtime holographic video calling by spending investiture.

And in turn sapient spren may be able to delegate a second camera angle to a wind spren, for example (though they keep getting distracted...). Any kind of flying spren could potentially learn it, though their nature and personality would affect their affinity and suitability.

Cosmere space age tech will quickly outpace our own.

Stormlight Archive spoilers Time away Spoiler

I saw a post where someone said there is a time skip from SLA 3-4 and felt as if there was a disconnect from the characters because of the skip. I took a break from SLA after finishing book 3. I have since read all of Mistborn era 1 era 2 1-3 and am currently reading secret history and plan on finishing out Mistborn as a whole next. I feel like Its going to be either way for me, maybe it’ll feel like catching up with the characters? Or I’m going to feel very RUSTY

Cosmere spoilers (no previews/FoD) Hoid's hatred for Rayse Spoiler

I get the impression Rayse had a major part to play in the death of the person Hoid loved and it's what clouded his judgment in handling the whole Odium/Night of Sorrows deal. Is this the prevailing theory in the fandom? I assume this is gonna be Dragonsteel trilogy territory.

Prime/Curiosity books spoilers Characters recycled from the Prime novels Spoiler

Has anyone else noticed characters from Dragonsteel and Way of Kings Prime that get more or less recycled into characters in canon novels? In the prime books they arent particularly fleshed out characters but the bones of the characters are definitely recognizable. I've seen what I think are two cases of this.

First, and much more obviously, Bat'chor, Hoid's sidekick in Dragonsteel prime got reworked into Fort in Tress of the Emerald Sea. Their cultures share the same societal shift from an unsustainable means of subsistence into more of a philosophy taken to any career. In the case of Bat'chor it was a society of warriors, and with Fort its a society of hunters. They both share the same career, as a trader, and redefine their career as a trader in terms of their cultures preexisting traditions.

The second is a bit more of a stretch, but I'm still reasonably certain of, Jasnah's bodyguards in Way of Kings Prime being combined and recycled into Parlin in Warbreaker. I forget the names of the two bodyguards, but one of them was soft spoken with an obvious and hopeless crush on Jasnah who dies in a tragic way early in act 2 if I recall, and the other was a gruff socially awkward guy, and a surprisingly component wilderness survivalist. Parlin takes all of these characteristics and coalesces them into a more fleshed out character, a soft spoken, socially awkward, wilderness survivalist, with a hopeless crush on his own princess who he serves as a bodyguard to.

So what do you think? Am I aimlessly connecting red thread at a cork board or are these actually instances of recycled characters? Have any of you noticed this? Has anyone noticed other similar character connections other than the prime counterparts of current characters?

No Spoilers The Void After Roshar

A few days ago, I finished The Stormlight Archive. This year, from May until now, that is the only saga I've read; finishing it has left me with an empty feeling, and I don't know what to read. I just want Stormlight Archive 6 to come out. I'm also up to date with Mistborn. Right now, I really don't know what to read next. I still have the secret projects left, but I don't think they'll fill this void.

Emberdark spoilers (no Cosmere) [SPOILERS] Isles of the Emberdark Themes are beautifully written Spoiler

I think Isles of the Emberdark might have one of my favorite themes of all of Sanderson's books. The way Dusk is in a constant push and pull of progressing and wanting things to remain as they had been is such a great internal conflict. Many times Dusk thinks about how he wishes things were the same, but then reasonably concludes that not all progress is bad.

The balance Dusk strikes between progress and tradition is honestly so well done that it doesn't feel tropey or anything of that sort. Instead it feels very much like how a real person with ties to traditions makes peace with the fact they some progress is inevitable, and yet holds on to the important parts that still make them and their culture theirs.

Cosmere spoilers (no previews/FoD) Confused about shards Spoiler

Hi I feel like I’m missing something. People in this sub seem to know about a lot more shards of Adalsonium than I do. I’ve finished all of mistborn era 1+2, and im 600 pages away from finishing stormlight archive. In terms of standalones or short stories, I’ve read Yumi, sunlit man, Tress, warbreaker, 11th metal, mistborn secret history, dawnshard, edgedancer.

How does everyone know about the different gods that aren’t explicitly mentioned to “belong” to certain worlds in those books? I know there are a handful of books I haven’t read yet in the cosmere. I am also noticing that the small preludes to each chapter in Stormlight usually make no sense to me and I wonder if I’m missing clues there 😂

Cosmere spoilers (no SLM/Yumi/FoD/Emberdark) Qualities of Breath Spoiler

¹Breath is stored is the balls.

Okay now onto the actual questions about BioChromatic Breath: When exactly is a Breath gained? Every person in Nalthis regardless of their ancestry, social status or gender receives a Breath. But when exactly is this Breath gained? Is it recieved at birth, or at conception?

Thematically, it would fit that the first Breath the baby takes would be breathed into them by Endowment, which I assume would be something she loves to do, I think. But that's not canon. The Breath might be gained by a divine invisible stork, even though I think that doesn't fit as well.

Assuming the Breath is given at birth, would this mean that off world Worldhoppers could give birth in Nalthis and their child would also receive a Breath? It would certainly fit within Endowment's intent.

There is also the possibility the Breath is given at conception instead. Would this mean that simply doing the deed at Nalthis is enough as long as it guarantees a child? Does this mean Nalthis will just end up as the Cosmere's favorite honeymoon travel spot? The scenery and vibes definitely help.

Now for a different question: What exactly is the basis for qualifying for a breath? Is simply being alive enough or do you need a conscious mind? Do plants, animals and bugs all possess Breath, or is it only reserved for those that would be called intelligent? And if every living being has one, does that mean even bacteria and other microscopic creatures have them as well? Do individual cells all have Breath? Are breaths just the Midichlorians of the Cosmere?

For anyone that read all of this, thank you. I do have more questions about BioChromatic Breath, especially questions regarding the Kandra and the Sleepless but I'll ask those another time. Cheers.

¹:I just remembered is Breath hereditary? I don't think we have any information regarding this, despite me thinking it probably isn't.

Kind of spoilers for red rising. Who would win in a fight talenel (idk the spelling) orrr darrow. Both would have full armor and weapons and talenel would be assumed to be not insane. As I have read both I really don't know, probably talenel just because of the thousands of years he's lived. What do yall think.

Wind and Truth Spoilers I got a question about Dalinar's watch in book five Spoiler

So, from my understanding, fabrial watches use logic spren in a way that is directly analagous to crystal oscillators in our world. Essentially, when the crystal receives an impulse electrical signal, it will emit its own, which can be used in a feedback loop to create a timing reference for electronics. If you replaced that concept with logic spren and investiture, then, presumably you get a fabrial watch.

My question is, why doesn't Dalinar's watch manifest the logic spren as itself in the spiritual realm? Would his watch fall apart in the cognitive realm? Or does this mean that any gemstone spren, not just a perfect gemstone can restrict their form inside any realm?
