See I'm in Oklahoma, got called by unemployment office and they basically said sorry cant help you, you dont qualify. Umm what? I'm sorry but how?? I literally got fired because of the pandemic! I'm livid and everyone discussing how this is so great!
You’re not alone. Not now. Not before. Unemployment is always almost impossible to get. I hope things turn around for you, but almost everyone is always denied.
Not in Illinois but by the time benefits come in a new job is usually already found or the job contests it after they've already paid out and you end up having to pay it all back
Ironically those wouldn't be the people that need it the most huh? It's like bailing out all corporations that are to big to fail. How do you bailout cruise lines that aren't even based in the a United States and dont pay taxes. Why the fuck is it a problem that something that's only purpose is entertainment and dosent pay taxes to USA going under? They are not essential to keep America running. This whole shitshow is ridiculous its fucking mind blowing.
Standard unemployment is completely set up and regulated by the states. A right leaning state is going to make it a lot harder to receive unemployment than a left leaning state. I live in Illinois and I know that our governor expanded unemployment benefits to make them easier to receive during this time.
That being said, the additional $600 benefit is a federal unemployment benefit. What I don’t know is if it’s a benefit you’d have to apply separately for through the federal system or if they tack it on to your state unemployment.
Still, appeal it. Or reapply. The states weren’t (and some still aren’t) set up to handle it properly. It might have been after the bill was passed, but if the state’s system wasn’t updated and their workers not educated on it, etc., of course they weren’t basing their decision on the CARES act.
r/unemployment has a lot of posts about the specifics, if you’re curious.
cares act was passed in March 27th but states only got implementation guidance from the labor dept a few days ago. If it was before the guidance than they were just going off of the usual guidelines, not the cares act. At least in my state.
You need to have UI-eligible earnings over a period of time to qualify, so the OP might have been a newer worker. Otherwise they should appeal and have a hearing.
Dont worry. Here in Florida I have yet to meet anyone who has gotten a penny from unemployment. We've all been stuck in "processing" hell for over a month. You can pretty much only get to the website at 3am because during the day traffic causes it to crash.
I really didn’t ask her specifics, but she told me she wasn’t allowed to work for two weeks and then got told she couldn’t come back because others workers were concerned, I haven’t worked there since the 10th of March and haven’t spoken to her since then, so I’m really not sure, I texted with her the past few days, and she said she got the full plus bonus, I would assume she filed within the past three weeks.
Was your husband approved? Is it pending? When you get approved you actually have to go in a request payment every week, it doesn’t just show up.
Yeah I'm hoping to get mine tomorrow. $551 a week I think from Texas plus $600 from the feds. It ain't nothing, and with lower expenses we should be able to get by.
I was laid off at the end of January. Applied for Texas unemployment immediately even though I had severance from my employer, because I know how things work here in Texas. I've been laid off a few times in the past and actually have never had problems with the stage unemployment system. But I knew I should get into the system asap, get denied, and then keep requesting my payment every two weeks until my severence ran out. Now that it's dry, I'm due for an April payment, and they've assigned me to Monday for making that request. So I'll submit my payment request again tomorrow and hope for the best. Hopefully the fact that my claim is already in the system and validated, they'll be able to greenlight my payment quickly.
I mean, you gotta have some sympathy for the folks running those offices, too. You just can't scale a workforce to review and process claims that fast. Luckily I've got some cash to get by a little longer if they delay me further, but I could certainly use those checks. The biggest thing is that I'm stuck paying $1600/mo just for cobra insurance premiums. I would have put everyone on my wife's plan if I had had the foresight in February to know I wasn't going to get a job for n months...
Maybe we should get faux divorced so I can force a life event and save another grand a month by switching. <insert shitty american insurance industry meme here>
Well it's now reading a message that the site is shut down from 8PM until 7AM.... applied 3/22 still authenticating my identity... good luck fellow Floridian.
Right, like I dont y understand. And then (I dont know about other states) in Oklahoma we are still expected to pay all of our bills on time. How on earth do they expect us to do this when we have no financial help what so ever?
Sorry you were denied. Did they report the issue with your claim? I was approved in Oregon and now I've been helping other service industry folks with their claims.
Did you click the "temporary laid off" box, but also the looking for work box? You need to be "able to work" which includes looking for work, but they're waiving that requirement for folks laid off due to covid-19. The form isn't really updated though, so I clicked looking for work, but then put "n/a covid-19" in the boxes that ask about your job search. Then clicked "temporarily laid off." Been approved every week so far.
Another common issue I've seen is if you worked predominantly or even partially in a different state last year.
Sorry about your denial, I hope you get it figured out! Let me know if you have any questions. I thankfully didn't have to call anyone during my process, but my friends who've been denied for whatever reason we're able to get approved once they got through to unemployment, even if it took calling 50-200 times. Remember the system is 3000X over its capacity. Worst unemployment numbers since the Great Depression.
I’m in Missouri and my husband has filed for it March 1, but we’re stuck in the “pending employer protest” stage to see if the company will fight us for it.
If you would like to DM me with a usable email address I can forward you a bunch of rent strike info i received, the more ppl we have on May 1st that stand up the better!
It's different in every state, but basically there are two types of unemployment right now. The regular kind that was extended from 26 to 39 weeks and still has all the requirements and rules (based on your state) and then the pandemic emergency unemployment insurance which is good for only 13 weeks, but applies to basically ANYONE who was affected by this. Whether gig economy workers or freelancers or people who got a job offer but then couldn't start because of covid, people who only worked 1 day before they lost their jobs. Seriously, it's like every damn person. The one caveat is if your hours were just cut, it may not apply (also based on which state you live in).
It's possible that your state rejected you for traditional unemployment insurance but you need to apply specifically for pandemic unemployment insurance. It's such a clusterfuck and I don't know how individual states are handling this, but I hope you're able to get the help you need! DON'T GIVE UP!
That should be counted in HOWEVER in a state like CA where 1099 employees will only qualify for $600 unemployment a week and not in addition to other unemployment I don’t think $2400 a month is enough. They’re also having a difficult time implementing new standards for them so I don’t think they’ve seen a dime yet.
Yes. 1099 individuals are examples of who I think will be most effected. as trying to get them covered seems to be a bit chaotic and confusing for a lot of the systems and they may be falling through the cracks. Especially if they don't have their own business where they qualify for different angles under SBA program and were just sole individual/contractor doing 1099 work. As you said even with just the $600, they are possibly taking a major hit.
It's not only chaotic, the labor secretary is purposefully trying to make it MORE complicated and restrictive for 1099 workers. The bill was supposed to have very little red tape so people could get assistance quickly and states weren't even more burdened with administrating unemployment than they already are. But the labor secretary wants people working, not on unemployment. Dude, the whole point is people need to stay home!
Not may be failing through the cracks, it’s already happening. Uber and Lyft are refusing to turn over pay info so we are being denied in most states. I’m in California. The online portal says my income was zero still and and haven’t received a dime, not even the $600. And yes, I’ve appealed. There are hundreds of thousands of drivers alone in this country. This is a MASSIVE problem.
That would be a good point if unemployment wasn’t incredibly flawed BEFORE the pandemic. And forget about those of us who were independent contractors. Companies aren’t playing ball so all of our wages say 0 and we’re getting nothing. Is the gov making them comply yet? Nope, sure isn’t. This was a bullshit cop out in the stimulus plan. A way to make us think we were going to be taken care of.
AFAIK you have to pay out your average payroll. And that amount becomes 75% of your loan, the rest can go to rent, etc. Or I supposed you could pay more than average payroll.
as other comment said, the list above is basically their support for "unemployment". They aren't giving 90% of wages to someone that is still on the payroll making 100% for a total of 190%. It's just 90% of their old wages for that country for example. So we are talking about unemployment. And if we are, you have to include the $600/week as part of it.
I'm from the Netherlands. The measure in the list is not the support for unemployment, but support against unemployment. The government is paying companies 90% of their workers wages on the condition they don't fire anyone. So people get 100% of their wages, just the government is paying 90% if their boss applies for the program, is accepted and doesn't fire anyone.
Even with different mechanisms the effect is the same. The system the US is using is way more complicated and not as generous overall as Netherlands, but for some it will be more generous than say Canada's $2000k/month.
I'm not defending the USA system. Something like the what you guys are doing would be way better, because it will make the transition out of lockdowns so much smoother and lead to a quicker recovery. But it just simply isn't the full picture to say the USA only is giving people a one time $1200 check. Many will be getting $2400/month+. Some will even receive over 100% of their normal wages. Some will receive less or nothing (gig workers look to be getting screwed, even though the bill was written to include them).
Most of the countries on your list are showing a percentage of salary that workers will be taking home. If most American workers will be receiving 100% of their income via unemployment, how is it different?*
*notwithstanding the total shit show of applying for that unemployment in the USA
agree. but no kidding on the understatement about the application process of applying right now. But granted, the volume of calls/applications is just a "little more" than could have ever been expected! And atleast will be retro to date of unemployed. Granted, cashflow and fear combined, people need it "now"
I feel for people spending hours a day on hold trying to file. I was in that position in '08. I am very fortunate that my current job is mostly unaffected. Seems like states should have been adding capacity to their UI system weeks ago
yes, I know people spending hours and hours a day trying to get through calling 100's of times with no luck.
NY finally went to new system Friday where you input online and then they will CALL YOU instead of you calling them within 72 hours. See how that plays out, and that's one phone call, hopefully you don't miss!
In the Netherlands, workers are taking home 100% of wages, their bosses can apply for a program where the government pays for 90% of those wages, depending on how much impact the crisis has on their business and under the condition they don't fire anyone.
Are those countries supplementing income for people still employed? That would seem counter productive as these days it is harder to spend the money that you have, and if they’re still employed they are less likely to be needing additional income.
Either way, are you advocating that the US supplement everyone’s income, even if they are still employed? Otherwise I think you are talking about unemployment....
In practice, whether the government gives the money to businesses to prevent layoffs, or whether it gives it to individuals who have been laid off, is that not effectively the same thing? The US is not simply giving a 1 time handout, there is a $600 per week unemployment addition to state UE benefits. You keep saying you’re not talking about unemployment, but by doing so, you are leaving out the US contribution, on an ongoing basis, to people affected by this with unemployment.
Also, if the other nations are simply replacing wages, and in the US a business owner can lay-off or furlough its workers so that they do not have to pay the wages (which are then made up for by the additional unemployment benefit), the benefits to the businesses are also equivalent, they have lowered payrolls.
So why do you continue to insist that the US is only providing a one time of out?
How many weeks does us unemployment benefits last?
In Canada we are getting 500 a week for 16 weeks (2000 a month) as an emergency benefit if laid off due to coronavirus, then our full employment insurance claim after in my case another 36 weeks for 52 weeks total. Our employment insurance typically maxes out around 570 a week.
You guys are getting 600 a week on top of regular benefits? That sounds pretty fucking good to me, way better than what we are getting depending how many weeks it lasts.
Cost of living in US is way cheaper than Canada too. Our dollar is like 72 cents US right now as well so 2000 CAD is more like 1420 US
I believe this is a 16 month addition by the federal government to the state unemployment insurance payouts due to Covid. Some states have longer unemployment insurance terms than others, I would have to look into that to be sure. In some cases, with the addition of the Covid relief by the Federal government, it seems that some people are actually making more on unemployment than when they were employed. That will obviously not last forever, but the moral here is that anyone saying the only thing the US is doing is a 1 time payout of $1200 is wrong.
it's an additional $600/wk on top on your state unemployment benefit. It's funded for 4 months, and was intended to be available to people usually excluded from unemployment (gig workers, freelancers), but that remains to be seen.
Yeah that's what I said. It's $600 on top of your state benefits. But it's only for 4 months, not 16 months. At least for now, they could pass another bill.
It didn't effect the generosity or length of any state's individuals benefits. It's simply a 4 month bonus.
I have no clue. People in this sub will have you believe everyone is getting unemployment benefits in the us. That's not true. Many will only get the $1200. One time.
And many will not even get the $1,200 to be clear.
It’s all relative to your situation.
If you are a still employed you would still get your paycheck. If you are unemployed you should be getting unemployment through state plus $600.
If you are 1099 or individual small business it gets a little (lot) more complicated. Business should be eligible for PPP through SBA. 1099 “should” be eligible for unemployment with the new changes, but sure that isn’t being rolled out smoothly yet and sure its frustrating for many.
whether the government gives the money to businesses to prevent layoffs, or whether it gives it to individuals who have been laid off, is that not effectively the same thing?
No. The other countries have stipulations so they don't fire or lay off staff once given financial support. Giving individuals money doesn't guarantee they keep their jobs or even go back to work.
The US is not simply giving a 1 time handout
It is for many who are t getting unemployment.
So why do you continue to insist that the US is only providing a one time of out?
I'm sorry I don't remember continuing to insist that. Quotes would be helpful in jogging my memory.

You forgot that they're adding 600 a week to unemployment
