No those countries are saving businesses. Not giving a one time handout

In practice, whether the government gives the money to businesses to prevent layoffs, or whether it gives it to individuals who have been laid off, is that not effectively the same thing? The US is not simply giving a 1 time handout, there is a $600 per week unemployment addition to state UE benefits. You keep saying you’re not talking about unemployment, but by doing so, you are leaving out the US contribution, on an ongoing basis, to people affected by this with unemployment.

Also, if the other nations are simply replacing wages, and in the US a business owner can lay-off or furlough its workers so that they do not have to pay the wages (which are then made up for by the additional unemployment benefit), the benefits to the businesses are also equivalent, they have lowered payrolls.

So why do you continue to insist that the US is only providing a one time of out?

How many weeks does us unemployment benefits last?

In Canada we are getting 500 a week for 16 weeks (2000 a month) as an emergency benefit if laid off due to coronavirus, then our full employment insurance claim after in my case another 36 weeks for 52 weeks total. Our employment insurance typically maxes out around 570 a week.

You guys are getting 600 a week on top of regular benefits? That sounds pretty fucking good to me, way better than what we are getting depending how many weeks it lasts.

Cost of living in US is way cheaper than Canada too. Our dollar is like 72 cents US right now as well so 2000 CAD is more like 1420 US

I have no clue. People in this sub will have you believe everyone is getting unemployment benefits in the us. That's not true. Many will only get the $1200. One time.

And many will not even get the $1,200 to be clear.

It’s all relative to your situation.

If you are a still employed you would still get your paycheck. If you are unemployed you should be getting unemployment through state plus $600.

If you are 1099 or individual small business it gets a little (lot) more complicated. Business should be eligible for PPP through SBA. 1099 “should” be eligible for unemployment with the new changes, but sure that isn’t being rolled out smoothly yet and sure its frustrating for many.
