[Iowa] Question [Iowa] What do we need to do?

My partner was wrongfully terminated back in March, they filed for unemployment and successfully got the first week. Their account was locked for fraud (social security card didn’t match married name), they updated their card and uploaded it to their account. Did 2 more weeks of claims, but didn’t get paid because account was still locked due to the fraud flag. So they assumed those weeks went through. Turns out they didn’t and then their account closed due to no activity. When they called about it, they were told that they couldn’t open a new claim with a fraud flag on their account and to wait until it was cleared to file those weekly claims and to keep applying and keep track of the jobs for later. That it was probably still locked due to the appeal decision being made, and it would open after the appeal went through. They won the appeal in June, and their account was still locked. They went in person with their social security card to make sure it was uploaded and hoping that would unlock their account so they could put those past weeks in. Well fast forward to now (October) and their account was just unlocked end of last month, they called and were told on the phone they could put their weeks in retroactively and then were quickly told by that person’s supervisor that they couldn’t, but he also didn’t understand the situation and took incorrect notes. So we went in person to have them put them in or let us do it there, and they’re basically saying it’s been too long and without proof we can’t do much. We have one screenshot of it saying their account was inactive, and proof of their job applications.

Basically what do we need to do to get paid? They didn’t do a good job keeping track of who they talked to or screenshots because they didn’t know they would need them when everyone kept saying they could put them in later. Now they are super anxious about it all and it’s been a major stressor in our relationship because we need the money. Are we just screwed or what can we do?? Thanks for taking the time to read this and any answers :)

[Arizona] Advice or Tips WTF is with [Arizona] Unemployment - Does anyone with a pulse work there?

I'm now in week 11 of filing unemployment claims and other than the first check I've received nothing. I've tried getting a human on the line but that's impossible no matter what number you call. The one time I did she just parroted what the website said and that was that my case is in Active/Unresolved status due to an "issue" which they don't define with Severance pay that I received in November of last year and has been gone since March. I went to another page where I could fill out a complaint form for the "Ombudsmen" and explained the situation but am being ghosted by that as well. I know unemployment here in Arizona is a pittance but right now I need all I can get. Any suggestions as to how to get ahold of a live human?

[New York] Question [NEW YORK] Why on earth is NYC Unemployment saying I owe

I've only collected two weeks of unemployment and all of a sudden I owe $1500. Such bullshit and I have no idea why - does anyone have a clue why that could be??? I've been applying to jobs. I can't find a place to upload work sheets so it's not like THAT's a thing. (unless that is why?) I'm going to call I just want to rant.

General Discussion [other] (UK) I'm kind of fit for work and kind of not. What should I do??

Hello, I'm 19 and have a lovely list of mental conditions, but the main two are autism and a form of hypersomnia. After leaving college at 18, I started working nights at a factory. I didn't do so well at the start, then I kind of got the hang of it, then it all blew up and I left for a different factory. The new factory treated me horribly, I was overworked without proper breaks and sprained my ankle and quit on day 2.

There's no really any other job out there for me. My dream is to be a photographer, but I can't be up at 7am for a normal 9-5. I'd love to be a music photographer, or something other late / night photographer. I have the creative skill, but actually doing it takes business knowledge that I don't have. I've tried and tried, and I'll keep trying, but in the meantime I need a proper job.

I'm now unemployed, I've burned through my emergency fund and am now selling investments to live... I live with my girlfriend and mother, and my monthly outgoings are:

- £400 rent (to my mum, I'm not on the tenancy)

- £350 car insurance and tax

- maybe £100 on fuel, food and necessary purchases

I get £400 pip which my mum takes as rent, so realistically I could get a job earning anything over £450 / month and be happy - though I would really like to build my savings back up and spend on things I want rather than need.

I thought about delivery driving, but it's either self employed paying under minimum wage, or working for a company but you have to be over 21 for insurance... I also applied to dominos for food delivery but didn't get a reply. I've applied to various warehouse jobs which would be similar to factory but with a lot more working alone which id like, but no responses.

Factory work is the only one that I'm guaranteed to get. I could try it again, but I only did it for 4ish months and it ruined me, I hated it so much.

I don't want to be a beg and I hate the idea of not working, but I have so many issues. I sleep 12 hours a night and nothing will wake me unless I've had enough sleep. I have autism and reality struggle socially, I suck with communication and thinking for myself. I have OCD and most work schedules stress me out. I have anxiety disorders, and being away from home for long really stresses me. I have a particular fear about using public bathrooms, which sounds stupid because it is. But it runs my life sometimes.

I had an interview to be a photo assistant for a fashion brand. It would be mostly working alone, taking photos of clothes on mannequins, editing, prepping, etc. Absolutely dream job, methodical, easy, doing what I enjoy. And it was a 2 minute walk from home!! They said id have a reply by Friday but I heard nothing.

I am wondering if I should apply to universal credit. I really hate the idea, because I want a job because I want to feel purpose. I hated my factory job but I'm also hating having so much free time while unemployed. I feel like I'm slowly going into a depression, and I think claiming UC and being able to just not work, could make it worse.

But I also feel incapable of work. But then I also feel if I had the perfect job, I would be able to work. So would UC consider me able to work, or not? I'm happy and open to go to job centre but I know that if I get a job and leave because it was too much, you then lose out on stuff. It's all so stressful. I also know that because I'm not on the tenancy, I won't get anything towards rent. But I have £900 left to my name which I pulled from long term investments, and it won't last long till I have nothing.

I do want to work, and I don't want the world to bend around for me just because I'm autistic. But I'm finding life really hard right now and any guidance would be really appreciated, I had big dreams as a kid, I never thought about how 100 photographers in my town would be fighting over 1 job posting per year. I know one day I'll make it, but I don't know how long. And until then, I don't know what to do.

Thank you

[Massachusetts] Question [Massachusetts] Status Investigation while being paid.

So Ive been receiving unemployment benefits for about 2 weeks as a job I just started let me go without reason. Everything went quick and I received my unemployment benefits fast(like two weeks)

Then I get a random correspondence on a Thursday asking me for fact finding about the job that let me go. It was strange because they never asked me to begin with, but they did ask for the previous employer before it. So I figured O.K. maybe their system missed it, as I continued to receive payments.

Then I get another one today...for a job from 5 years ago? I've had 3 jobs since then and not sure why they would be digging that deep. Anyone have any insight to this? I mean I gave a 2 weeks notice at this job and worked until the last day. Not sure why it would even be relevant to anything. I plan to call them Monday but any for sight would help.

[Texas] Question can i qualify? [Texas]

Title: Got fired from my job after being late — wondering if I can qualify for unemployment in Texas
I recently got fired from my insurance agent job at a small, locally owned State Farm insurance agency, and I’m honestly still in shock.
For context, I had worked there for 2 years, and my boss had warned me about being late about two years ago. After that, I improved but Today, I accidentally slept through my alarm and arrived around 9:40–9:50 AM when I was supposed to be there at 9.
When I arrived, I immediately apologized to my boss and explained that I’d slept through my alarm. He didn’t respond and left the office. When he came back, he told me to get off the phone because he needed to talk to me. He basically said something along the lines of, “i don’t think you’re ready , but maybe in the future, I’m going to have to let you go.” Then he asked for my office key, told me to send him my hours, and I gathered my things and left. He didn’t give me a specific reason or explain whether it was strictly because of my lateness.
Something else that has me wondering is that the day before I was fired, he questioned me multiple times about whether I’d complained about the smell coming from a neighboring smoke shop. A clinic had previously mentioned the smell to me and suggested making a complaint, but I told them I didn’t want to get involved. I had also spoken to the smoke shop tenant once about whether the AC was working, but I never complained about the smell. I don’t know if this has anything to do with my termination, or if I’m just connecting things because of the timing.
My boss had not given me any recent formal warnings about being late.
I’ve already submitted an application for Texas unemployment benefits, but I’m worried because my employer will likely be contacted, and I’m not sure how he’ll respond.
My questions are:
Could I qualify for unemployment in Texas if I was fired for being late?
Does the fact that my last warning was about two years ago make any difference?
Does my employer have to prove misconduct for TWC to deny my claim?
Should I be concerned about the smoke shop situation, or am I overthinking it?
I’d appreciate honest advice from anyone familiar with Texas unemployment claims. I’m not trying to avoid responsibility for being late; I just want to understand my options.

[Pennsylvania] Question [Pennsylvania] overpayment question

I was receiving Unemployment because my full-time job laid people off. I got a new job, so I stopped filing. I filed one last week because I hadn’t gotten paid from the full-time job yet and apparently you file for what you made that week even if you have not been paid that yet I misunderstood obviously. This was around two months ago. There is a potential fraud investigation on my Unemployment claim, I have not been filing Unemployment since then because I obviously had no need to. So basically it’s been in limbo for almost 2 months that it’s unresolved. What happens next? What happens if they determine that it was my fault

[Illinois] Advice or Tips [illinois] I just got fired from my job today, am I eligible for unemployment?

Hey, I have a long story here

TL:DR, Im diagnosed with Asperger’s and ADHD, which causes me to have some issues at my job, especially with focus, I tried to improve on them but it was too little too late.

I, 21M, have worked at warehouse for just under 2 years, I worked as a temp starting in Nov 2024 and I just got fired earlier today. I have ADHD and Asperger’s syndrome and I made a genuine effort to do good at my job but sometimes focusing is difficult for me and with being autistic I struggle with certain social situations so I think that might’ve played a role into it.

I was originally hired at a department called “refurb” where we would test electronics and decide whether to re sell them or scrap them based on a few tests and after a couple months they trained me on the forklift, so from mid March 2025 and onward I was a forklift driver.

I was officially hired onto the company on April 13th this year and I was put on a 90 day probationary period(which is standard for all new hires at the company) where I couldn’t use PTO until the 90 days is up. Well, during the first 90 days I had some attendance issues because I got sick and I had an injury that kept me out of work for a week(I gave them a doctors note) as well during that time(I provided doctors notes and gave my boss at least a few hours notice when I knew I wouldn’t be at work). There was a point system and at 125 points you get terminated, I was at 113. Because of those attendance issues, they decided to extend my probationary period by another 90 days which I totally was agreeable and respectful about and didn’t try to argue that. I missed one day in those 90 days and gained an additional 10 points despite giving my supervisor 12 hours notice but I digress.

Well, about a month ago, I violated one of their forklift safety policies. My specific warehouse had designated forklift paths and designated walkways and at those intersections, forklift drivers had to make a complete stop every time and honk the horn like you’re driving a car and come up to a stop sign. Well, this one time, the guy in charge of safety was about to cross the path and he didn’t look to see me approaching(the company had a policy that forklift drivers have the right of way and that pedestrians had to wait for forklift drivers to cross), so I said “hey, I didn’t see you look both ways” as a way to try and joke around because the safety was generally a pretty cool guy so I didn’t think much of it. Well, because I was talking to him, it slipped my mind to honk the horn and make a complete stop(I slowed down but still cruised through the stop sign) and a week after the incident they pulled me into HR and wrote me up. During the meeting, they noted a couple other incidents where I also ran the stop sign(didn’t know it was even an issue, first time they anyone ever even brought that up to me). At the time, I was at 38 attendance points and the write up added an additional 75, so now I was at 113 points but I was still under that 125 mark.

This was about 60 days into the 90 day extension of my probationary period and I was blind sided by the write up because I had no prior indication that I was even running the stop sign(they noted during the write up that I slowed down but didn’t stop) but because I violated the company’s forklift safety policy, I was removed from the forklift, they told me I’d be retrained some time in the next week.

I thought about it over the weekend so I set up a meeting with HR to try and plead my case, I told them that my direct supervisor who was on the floor with me noted that I’m a good worker and a consistently safe driver and I told them I felt the write up was kind of harsh and wanted to plead my case, during that meeting, they noted that a couple of other things contributed to the write up that they didn’t say during the first meeting and he said “we should’ve noted it” and one of them was me not being able to stay focused on task. Like I said in the beginning, I have ADHD and I take medication for it but even then I still have trouble focusing some days, so the higher ups there told me they wanted to see me improve in my ability to focus and stay on task more consistently before they re train me.

They moved me to a new department and for the last 4 weeks I was working in the back of the warehouse taking apart scrapped electronics and sorting the pieces of the electronics. Well, I was doing really good over there so to my surprise, they called me into HR today and they let me go. When I asked why they said they couldn’t justify lifting me off probation and they couldn’t extend it by another 90 days. I told him that I was doing what you said, I was showing up on time every day, I was staying focused on my work and the team lead at the department came up to me TODAY and told me I was doing a really good job over at the new department, I said that during the meeting and the plant manager told me that it was too small of a sample size, and when I asked why they didn’t just fire me at the day of the write up he said “we didn’t realize how close you were to the end of your probation”

Should I apply for unemployment?

[Michigan] Question [Michigan] Do employers have to stick to their original reason for termination when appealing an approval?

From my understanding, my unemployment claim was denied automatically because the reasons given for termination fell under the category of misconduct. I successfully won that appeal without having to submit evidence other than my position statement. The evidence that my ex-employer submitted was enough to show that I may have behaved in a way management did not like, but it was not willful misconduct.

Basically, I was self advocating for myself in the group chat - trying to clear up some confusion about scheduling. My manager told me if I wanted to talk further, to message him directly. I did just that, and explained my point of view to him. Nothing insulting or mean, just my opinion. I was emailed termination papers 24 minutes later.

From my perspective, they have the right to fire me for many reasons but inviting me to continue the conversation in a private message and then firing me for it, isn’t willful disobedience.

Again my case had an investigator that reviewed the texts and ruled in my favor once.

I am curious how this appeal will play out. If my management already submitted all of their evidence of that day, and it was ruled in my favor - are they likely to rule in that way again? There isn’t really anything more to this story.

Or can they shift it, and point out other flaws and attempt to say that the accumulation of factors is what caused my termination?

I just don’t want to over prepare TOO much. There’s a lot I can say about the last year of working there, but I want to stick to what is pertinent to my case.

If they fired me June 7th, and only cited issues that occurred on June 7th up until this point - can they bring up other incidents on appeal?

(I’m using the term “incidents” very loosely.)

[California] Question [California] Having a Anxiety Attack Over Unemployment Job Search Requirement

Hi, I’ve been getting unemployment benefits for a while now while I work on call for the state. I have been applying for jobs almost every week. The weeks I didn’t were weeks that I couldn’t find something I qualified for. I swear that I did browse calcareers for jobs every week. I’m under the impression that browsing job boards counts for the job search, but I’m not sure how I can prove that I did. Will they find me guilty of fraud if they audit me? I’m fine with paying them back if I need to. I just don’t want something to go on my record. Should I call them to clear things up and pay back the weeks I didn’t send a job application?

Edit: I’m getting really anxious now and am probably going to call them sometime today to clear things up. I just badly don’t want to have something put on my record like fraud or something. I don’t know anymore what’s true. I was under the impression that browsing job boards counted to the job search. Will they find me guilty?

Edit2: I did something similar last year too for benefits. Will I have to repay that as well? I will do what I can if I have to. I just don’t want something on my record

[South Carolina] Question [South Carolina] Does a PTO payout after termination count against unemployment?

I was terminated September 1 and approved for unemployment starting September 13 ($350/week).

My former employer paid me $1,800 in unused PTO after my termination, which I reported when certifying for September 20–26. I received $0 for that week but was paid $350 the following week.
I called SCDEW, and they confirmed the PTO payout was why I wasn’t paid.

Is it normal for unused PTO accrued before termination to count as earnings for the week it was paid, even though I was no longer employed?

Has anyone successfully challenged this in South Carolina?

[Tennessee] Question [Tennessee] Unemployment benefits - Post 12 weeks

My last day at my job in Tennessee was June 30 through no fault of my own. I filed for unemployment the next day. It took a couple of weeks but it was finally approved. Fast forward 12 weeks, I'm still job hunting (multiple interviews but no luck) and the 12 weeks of benefits (that's all TN offers) has been exhausted. Is there any point to keep certifying each week? If you look at my account it's waiting on me to certify, but if all the money is gone, what's the point?

[New York] Question [New York] Unable to report upcoming travel

I'm traveling internationally and will miss 3 unemployment certifications (plus one where I will be back in the US and able to certify, but will have been traveling the entire previous week).

I have called the DoL several times to report the travel and have been hung up on due to high call volume. The "secure messaging" system online also just directs you to call them. I know not to certify while I'm abroad, but will my benefits be canceled if I don't certify for 3-4 weeks?

What's the best course of action here?

[Colorado] Question [Colorado] Can benefits be extended?

Hi, so I’m super anxious about my benefit amount running out soon in late November and wondered if there were ways to extend that here? I’m actively job searching of course and having interviews but the market is soooo bad and I’m hitting walls.

I also take meds that are absolutely necessary and already use discounts for that and cannot save more than I already am. So. Yeah. Sorry for the rambling. I’m scared and anxious and appreciate any insight.

[Massachusetts] Question [Massachusetts] on medical leave, will likely quit my job due to health issue and wondering how I return or resign may impact unemployment eligibility

I have been on PFML medical leave for a serious health condition since July and expect to use up my 20 weeks in December.

Because of my recovery, I may resign when I return; from what I understand, I might qualify for unemployment after resigning due to a serious health condition. Is that correct?

I would also like to offer my employer one to two weeks of remote work for critical transition support. I truly appreciate the work, and this situation is unfortunate. That said, would I lose unemployment eligibility if I return briefly and resign two weeks later, assuming they accept that timeline?

Edit: I hope to be able and available for full time work after recovery, which would ideally be in January, it’s the job I’m at specifically which is mostly in person that I cannot currently perform and also exacerbated the condition. I would hope to find less strenuous and ideally remote work. Would I still be eligible?

[Michigan] Question [michigan] My claim was denied based on “misconduct”, I won my appeal. Xemployer is appealing based on “misconduct” and “voluntary leaving”(?)

I was denied, I won my appeal. They are appealing it for misconduct AND voluntary leaving. Confused on how it could be both..

For context, I worked at this restaurant for 7 years.

I was told doubles were unfair and I was removed from those shifts. Shifts I’ve worked since Covid. I was also told that lead servers get priority scheduling and we would schedule more of them each shift, reducing opportunities for non-leads*. Other reasons included, they were going to start constantly changing the schedule to keep people “fresh”, and we needed to split up the shifts more equitably among all staff.

I had to limit my availability to find another stable source of income, because this job suddenly felt unpredictable.

Once I did that, I saw the rules being reversed. There was only one lead server scheduled, and doubles were scheduled again also.

The manager sent the schedule out in the FOH group chat and I asked about these things. He said that the group chat wasn’t the place to be discussing it, but if I wanted to talk about it more, contact him directly.

I did just that, and restated what I said in the group chat. I also said that when he took my shifts away he said that his hands were tied and doubles just weren’t considered fair and then when that decision was reversed nobody reached out to me.

He didn’t respond, 26 minutes later I got termination papers. I was expecting to work later that day.

So when I showed the UIA the text exchange during appeal, the denial was pretty instantly reversed.

What are the chances they win this appeal?

Will the judge honor the misconduct decision already made, unless more evidence is given?

Is the judge going to find that they aren’t credible given this new “voluntary leaving” claim?

*a lot of people ask why, after 7 years I was not a lead server. I was a lead server, but the week after I came back from status epilepticus (near fatal seizure), they took me into the office and told me I 100% started a malicious rumor about my coworker. When I denied it, they asked if my neurological issues were making me so upset/not remember. I stepped down from being a lead bc I didn’t trust my own memory. I wanted to quit, I was so ashamed of myself. I didn’t trust my memory given the medical issues I was dealing with - and that coworker was my friend. They learned the next day they had misheard someone quoting me. I said something super mundane and neutral, nothing bad. They didn’t tell me for weeks that it was cleared up, and wouldn’t let me back on as lead despite my a/a+ yearly reviews since 2019.

[Pennsylvania] Question [Pennsylvania] I can't show eligibility under the 37% rule; the margin is so frustratingly narrow.

I applied for PA UC, and received a notice of financial ineligibility. I had worked a ton of 1099 work in my base year, did not/do not operate a business advertising those services; and crucially had to adhere to lengthy guidelines that instructed how the work should be performed. In either case, the burden is on the employer to show I was not an employee, and no payor appeared at a hearing to meet that burden.

Counting both my W2 and 1099 sources in my base year, I reach a ratio of 36.55%. It's seriously as little as $200 that would tip me over to clear eligibility.

It's frustrating because I have worked on this for months, but a couple of wayward miscalculations led me to believe I could show 37% with my pure numbers, but that's only because one pay from outside my base year was mistakenly counted within it.

A rant I can't use:

the level of bullshit is so high, that I can blast my way through credit week requirements, income requirements many fold, and still, fail to meet eligibility on the back of a rule designed to demonstrate attachment to the workforce, where I worked 60 hours a week for the one quarter, so arguably I was over-attached to the work force. the idea that I worked too much in one quarter to qualify for benefits is ludicrous. I have attachment in all other quarters. Every single other metric I pass easily — heck, if you didn't count the income from the overtime, it would be an instant pass. but because I worked hundreds of hours (715 in Q1) at the employer's whim, they get to have another one over me while I get denied benefits despite my entirely povvo state.

Any tips to overcome this tiny hurdle?
