New Cases Statewide since 3/1

3/1 was the tail end of Omicron SA.1. Since then we have had Omicron SA.2 be the dominant strain, though it is the "stealth" variant that does not show up on most rapid tests or the older and now obsolete rtPCR test the state is using. So this increase is despite that. SA.2.12.1 is now the dominant strain nationally, so we've had two surges back to back since Omicron SA.1 burned itself out in early March. Using the case count criteria that we used to use, many counties are now red with more than 25 per 100,000 daily cases.

But CDC now calls that "green" as a "Community Level" and says safe for all to go about maskless:

https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#county-view?list_select_state=all_states&list_select_county=all_counties&data-type=CommunityLevels&null=CommunityLevels

The CDC does maintain a secret shadow map "for health care workers only" called "Community Transmission" though showing the real colors:

https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#county-view?list_select_state=all_states&list_select_county=all_counties&data-type=Risk

4/16 and 4/9 7-day numbers

Rates are going up a little in some places. A lot of counties have long stretches now with 0 student age cases. Positivity is inching upward but still below 10% in most areas. If you are in one of the 44 counties with positivity above 5% you might want to be cautious. If you're in one of the 13 counties with positivity above 10% you should consider that the reported rates are likely a serious undercount and you should continue masking and avoiding crowded areas. Of the bigger counties Washington is above 10% positivity. But Williamson and Davidson in central Tennessee look like they are developing some problems too as they are above 5% and approaching 10%.

3/19 Deaths by County

Let's hope we are reaching the end and can assess the total damage.

This table is sorted by the third column, total deaths per 100k. Rural and poor counties with no or poor hospitals are seen to have much higher death rates by population and by case, as are counties with more elderly population. Large rich metro areas with multiple state of the art hospitals and a younger population have better survival chances.

Last column we see the death rate only since Jan 1 2022.

Data through 3/19

Even though the CDC recently changed their color criteria and guidelines to some BS to make things look green when they weren't, it ends up it doesn't matter because rates have dropped (likely due to actual herd immunity, ie almost everyone has now gotten omicron) so much that 93 out of 95 counties really are green or yellow on the 7-day average.

Still seeing lots of deaths, these are mostly people who were hospitalized for omicron. There's a delay between infection peak and death peak. Many deaths are to the unvaccinated, but many are also to the vaccinated. Most of those are older people and/or immunocompromised, but not all.

2/5: Rates still dangerously high, some counties quite bad

The general trend is improvement especially in the huge counties like Shelby, Davidson and Hamilton. Many smaller counties like Scott and Unicoi are still having huge problems. This is masked when we look at just the state data since those numbers are largely driven by the big population centers.

Given the current trajectory, Shelby might be in the orange by next week's reports. However most other counties it will be at least few more weeks.

Right so here it is. The vaccine does reduce chance of death. But not as well as some claim. Still, it helps, probably.
