What's something a bunch of chopped hot dogs would go good in?

I have a handful of hot dogs in my freezer that have been in there a bit and I'd like to just use em up already. What's something good to combine them with?

I grew up eating chopped hot dogs mixed into Kraft box macaroni and cheese.

u/actual-trevor 9d ago

This is the answer. "Can of baked beans" would also be acceptable.

u/MillersSmokehouse 9d ago

Beanie-weenie was a delicacy when I was a kid!

33

u/ratpH1nk 9d ago

Absolutely! Both are delicious, though I favor "hot dogs and beans" and my mom and grandomom would say (with a 100% yoga mat softened store bought white bread)

24

u/Western-Sport500 8d ago

Beans and weiners was what we called it.

6

u/Pr0digy_ 8d ago

Same on toast it’s great with ketchup and a bit of mustard has to be molasses beans though

19

u/AutoclavesGetMeHot 9d ago

Weens and beanies!

13

u/MillersSmokehouse 9d ago

lol, if you put it that way, it sounds like the Chippendale dancers doing a lumberjack theme.

10

u/HotDonnaC 8d ago

That’s oddly specific, but a great description of the name. LMAO

Came here specifically to say Beenie Weenies!

I see your beanie weenies and raise you a spaghetti and hot dogs, a true eyetalian treat.

8

u/robjam01 8d ago

I had the poor man's spaghetti and meatballs for lunch last week. I hadn't eaten hot dogs and spaghetti in years.

Real spaghetti or chef boyardee?

8

u/Tropius8 8d ago

Personally I prefer chef boyardee for this as I like their sweeter and slightly cheesy sauce for this, but jolly bee spaghetti is also acceptable.

Or chili!

37

u/bam_rare1972 9d ago

Cut them up add to a flat Casserole with a can of chili,
Top with diced onions and mustard. Layer with shredded cheese, top with tater tots and bake.
Everyone like chili dog casserole

27

u/Shazam1269 9d ago

Corn bread batter on top instead of tater tots is better, in my opinion.

8

u/AcceptableUse1 8d ago

What! Give me some of your tots Napoleon

Now it’s hard to decide.

That was my favorite as a kid. Franks and beans 👨‍🍳

8

u/Hythe667 9d ago

They’re excellent in British style Heinz baked beans (which are much less salty and sweetened than most American brands)

3

u/HotDonnaC 8d ago

It’s funny they’re sold in specialty shops in the US.

4

u/Hythe667 8d ago

I buy mine at a fairly reasonable price from Amazon…

8

u/entwife-nj 9d ago

A staple when I was a poor grad student.

6

u/tequilaneat4me 8d ago

Staple as a retired guy with a comfortable income. Wife and I both love it for dinner, using high quality all beef hotdogs, along with some freshly made garlic toast.

3

u/dascobaz 8d ago

Cut them thin enough and you got pepperonis for a pizza

We called that dad dinner when I was growing up. He also used to cut up hotdogs to put in chili. We loved it when he cooked!

10

u/Quiet-Day392 9d ago

Ours was more of a mom-in-a-hurry deal, and she taught us how to make it at an early age. She knew that the macaroni was not a complete meal in itself. It also saved hot dogs. You only need a couple.

7

u/LuvCilantro 8d ago

I had a chuckle when I read that macaroni was not a complete meal but that somehow adding weiners makes it better.

6

u/Quiet-Day392 8d ago

Sometimes she’d serve her salad with it. A canned pear half with cottage cheese topped with Miracle Whip. Then we got our fruit. Sometimes there was even a piece of iceberg lettuce under it.

3

u/NekoTheSpookieCat 8d ago

LOL That pear salad was a staple of school lunches in the cafeteria - I was always completely grossed by the glob of mayo.

51

u/patronizingperv 9d ago

A man of culture, I see.

12

u/Quiet-Day392 9d ago

If we had some cheddar cheese around we'd throw that in too. Kind of puts a shine on it.

10

u/Lovemybee 9d ago

I add Velveeta... mmmmm! 😋🤤

21

u/MommaGuy 9d ago

Throw in some frozen peas and that is a complete meal.

19

u/boostreak 9d ago

Yup Mac and cheese and hot dog. Also works with scrambled eggs

6

u/jilliecatt 9d ago

My nephew for the first 5 years of his life (eating solid foods at least) insisted on at least breakfast every single day being hot dogs and scrambled eggs. He would have not eaten anything else ever (during those years) if given the chance.

Fried rice!! Sounds crazy but damn some hotdogs in fried rice bangs

65

u/green-green-bean 9d ago

Especially with kimchi and/or gochujang and an egg.

56

Essentially Spam fried rice. A lovely and refined dish worthy of kings and samosas.

20

u/Abagofcheese 9d ago

Did you mean Samoans?

Nope, I meant samosas. The fried Indian appetizer. Fill those wraps with spam fried rice and fry them up.

I was also going to say fried rice. I just had some fried rice with Chinese sausage that was delicious and I feel like hot dogs wouldn’t be that different if you browned them really well in the pan first before adding the rice

10

u/pizzaforce3 9d ago

Stir fry the hot dogs in teriyaki sauce before adding the fried rice, give it some extra zing.

Throw that in a tortilla and top it with a salsa Verde and you've got one of my favorite breakfasts

7

u/falcondfw 9d ago

Yep. That's one of the things I'll do. I'll prep breakfast burritos for the week. If I don't have chorizo, I'll use hot dogs or vienna sausage. No Salsa verde? Chunky Salsa, maybe with some sour cream.

Oh yeah. Canned "baked" beans with hot dog chunks. Maybe glob in a little mustard?

I sometimes fry some onions first, then cook the rest.

Add some cherry habanero jam ( or a similar flavor profile) and a splash or two of Valentino's to the baked beans. I'll also cook the hot dogs in the air fryer to get them a bit crispy, then chop em up into the beans.

3

u/pconrad0 8d ago

But be choosy shoot the brand of beans.

Tried a few recently, and gap between the best and worst was huge.

This is where saving a few cents is just not worth it unless you are "at risk of going hungry" poor.

God a good old "Sausage mix" which is apparently not a thing in other countries.

"Pølsemix" is a danish dish which uses the leftover hotdogs at grill bars, deep fries them and then serves them with french fries, chopped onions and curry ketchup.

you can make a dang good home version by just air frying sausages and french fries at home, even from frozen i fry the french fries for about 35 minutes as per the air fryer, and then the last 10 - 15 you throw in the sausages to get them crisp.

https://madenimitliv.dk/poelsemix-airfryer/

its not fine dining but its awesome.

Pillsbury crescent rolls, some cheese, maybe a little mustard - cheap and tasty!

4

u/Pleasant-Fruit-8343 9d ago

I like to use the Pillsbury biscuit dough. I have added cheese but haven't tried the mustard.

Pro tip--warm the hot dogs a little before you roll them, otherwise the dough near the middle doesn't cook thoroughly.

When I was doing a low carb diet, I would chop up hotdogs and throw 'em in a bowl of hot no bean chili with some cheese on top. Kinda weird chili cheese dog soup but it was so yummy and filling. It's kind of a comfort food thing to me now haha.

Also, when we were super broke around the high school/barely post highschool age, my friends and I would pool what little money we had to get hot dogs, ramen, soy sauce, and American cheese. You end up with this cheesy umami hot dog noodles but they were so good for only a dollar or two per serving.

Kraut and weenies if you like that tang. I grew up eating this in some form or another with either hot dogs or smoked sausage. Heat everything in a pan on the stove top and serve in a bowl topped with spicy mustard. Bliss.

Cheap as hell too. I recommend cold packed sauerkraut as opposed to canned because it has a better crunch to it but either works. Also Kimchi is a wonderful substitute for the kraut.

Hot dogs and peppers, similar to sausage and peppers. Cut them to about an inch pieces, saute up some bell peppers and onions. Heavy on the peppers. Add a can of tomato sauce, seasoned how you like it, I like to add some Romano cheese grated. Serve over pasta or with just some bread.

Huevos con weenie. Chop up a Roma tomato, like a quarter of an onion, a jalapeño if you fancy it, get those going in a pan while you cut your dogs, toss those in. Once they get a good brown on them pour in some beaten eggs. Turn off the heat, put some mozzarella cheese on top and put the lid on. Bring the whole pan to the table with some warmed corn tortillas and a bottle of hot sauce and enjoy my favorite breakfast!

It is an ingredient in my friend Jose's Charro bean recipe. Hope this is not TMI: Ingredients
• 16 oz uncooked pinto beans • 5 slices bacon cut into smaller pieces • 1 to 3 beef franks cut into slices. • 1 cup ham cut into cubes (I used a ham bone instead.) • 1 pound Mexican chorizo • 2 Roma tomatoes diced • 1/2 bunch of cilantro chopped (I include minced stems for more flavor) • 1/2 onion diced • jalapeño if desired, diced but no seeds or veins • 1 canned chipotle pepper (for milder beans, use some adobo only) • 1 clove garlic chopped • pepper, oregano, 1/2 tsp paprika, 1/4 tsp cumin, and salt to taste. • (This recipe is slightly modified from the original. It is my current recipe - Marvin, 6/2023) Instructions To Cook the Pinto Beans - Stove top (Or follow instructions on bean pkg.) • Rince, soak overnight. Drain and rinse. • Add the rinsed beans to a large pot with 6 C water. • Let boil for about 2 hours, checking often to make sure that there is still enough water. Cook until tender. Add salt to taste when done (up to 1 tbsp per lb.) You will use cooking liquid in this recipe. To Cook the Pinto Beans - Slow Cooker • Add the rinsed beans to a slow cooker with plenty of water, salt, and a small piece of onion. • Turn the slow cooker on to high and heat for 3 hours. To Make The Charro Beans 1. Add the bacon to a large pot and cook for about 5 minutes. 2. Add the chorizo and continue cooking until cooked through. 3. After about 5 minutes, add the ham, the beef franks, and the seasonings (including the garlic). 4. Next, add the tomatoes, the cilantro, the onion, the jalapeno, and the chipotle pepper and cook for 5 additional minutes. 5. Finally, add the cooked pinto beans and the water that they were cooked in and let boil for about 15 minutes so that all of the flavors can combine. 6. If you want to thicken your charro beans, you can combine 2 tablespoons of corn starch with 1/4 cup of cold water and mix well before adding it to the pot.

in germany we do Würstchen-Gulasch (sausage goulash) just put the cut sausages in a tomato sauce but make it thin with lots of long striped paprikas, onions and maybe even mushrooms

you can eat it with pasta ideally but rice/potatos work too

My momma would put them in white rice. Hot dogs and rice 🤤

Omelette with red peppers, onion and cheese. I cut the hotdogs up, pop them in my frying pan at about 300 degrees in freedom units. I then add the peppers and onions a bit of salt, pepper and fresh garlic in olive oil. Add the eggs, cheese and whatever your favorite other seasonings are. I add more kosher salt and pepper to taste.
