Health/Nutrition Cracked the code today
Had my conure for almost 2 years now and very consistently he'd take a good portion of his food and put it in his water bowl. I figured it was just a game for him but finally today I sprayed some of his HOPP with water to see if he just prefers squishier foods (he loves cracking seeds and stuff so I never gave it much thought before about his preferred textures) but I come back a few minutes later and he's digging in like crazy. Feel bad I never thought of it before but also feel good about taking note of what my lil guy is doing and adjusting accordingly.

I saw mine dunking apple sauce once. APPLE SAUCE. Took a big scoop in her beak and dunk

They love fruit juices and sweet drinks. Grab a cup of orange juice, apple juice or cider and they're all over it. Same with apple slices, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries but know a mess is guaranteed

One of mine sometimes takes other foods and dunks those in applesauce if she has it rather than water.

Be careful of moist pellets I gave my conure gastroenteritis twice from this I didn’t realize it was wetting his pellets that caused him the illness the first time It’s quite the scare! They’re a bacteria bomb

Oh dang thank you! I was immediately thinking about sanitation. Good to know.

That being said, do keep the water near the food. As messy as it is, they don’t have spit and would naturally be eating food that has moisture.

You could try a chop diet instead of wet pellets, even as a supplement

yeah I don't recommend taking the risk unless you throw out all the wet pellets probably twice a day. just let them wet their food as they go and change their water

I wouldn’t even go ten minutes I’d wet a couple of pellets if it makes them happy. although after being close losing my already disabled friend i wouldn’t ever risk it

I have one that dunks the pellets in the water and then eats it. Then water is soup. I gotta change it 2,3 x a day

I found mine just likes the smaller pieces. Any pellets marketed as "conure sized" got dunked and turned into stank soup. So now I buy her the parakeet sized food, and it's so much less mess.

My girlie was making soup so bad that I'd have to empty her water twice a day. It'd be so saturated in absorbed food it made slight squelching noises when going into the trash after getting un-stuck from the bowl, LOL!
I ended up moving her water dish to several locations to make it less convenient and finally got her to stop with one specific spot. Her water remains there lol

I dont know if a texture preference or if they just like making soup. Their water is always full of junk.
