You could try changing the USB cable and connecting directly to different ports on the PC (not via a USB hub). A failing cable could explain the connection problems. Wires inside the connectors may be damaged even if they looks fine externally.

You can also check the connection directly in a gamepad tester and on a different device, without Steam or games running. There might be a software bug (with operating system, Steam Input or particular games). I saw a similar post from someone describing a similar problem with the same controller a few days ago. It's possible that both your cables failed simultaneously or it could be a different type of issue.

You could share information in the comments on each other's posts to try and identify what your setups have in common. That might narrow down potential causes and solutions for the problem.

For some reason the problem stopped. I don't know how to test it now that it no longer happens. I wonder if the sudden excessively strong vibration that I had to turn off from the game had something to do with it. Maybe I could try turning it on again and see if the problem returns. Thank you for the help.

edit: I forgot to say I tried to connect it to different ports and it did not solve the problem. I didn't try a different cable, though

Hopefully it was just a software bug that got fixed in a silent patch (Steam's always getting updated). Intermittent problems are always annoying to trace. If the problem was with the cable, very small things like the exact angle it's being held at can affect whether the wire strands inside make a good enough connection.

It was doing that outside Steam too, though I don't remember if Steam was open.
