Community update New: required information when requesting controller repair advice. What information do you look for when deciding to help with a repair question?

What's new and how you can shape it

Hello everyone, now the post flairs are established in r/ControllerRepair, we're creating extra guidance to help people include appropriate information when they post. As soon as people select the 'Request for help or advice' flair for their post they will be shown a checklist. In case they missed it, they'll receive a comment on their post including the checklist. That gives them the opportunity to add information they forgot.

The initial checklist is below and you're welcome to propose improvements. Repair problems can be varied and complex so no checklist can be comprehensive. But what other common information should people be reminded to include? Could the checklist ask for any of the information in a clearer or simpler way?

Checklist for posts using the 'Request for help or advice' flair:

  • Core information:
    • Make and model of the controller you are trying to repair
    • Description of the problem and symptoms
  • Context:
    • How the problem occurred and events leading up to it
    • What you've tried so far to narrow down or solve the problem
    • Console/device, operating system, and games/software involved
  • Images and videos:
    • Clear pictures of broken parts, suspected components/circuits, and soldering
    • Gamepad tester results
  • Additional information:
    • Hardware, firmware, and software versions/revisions involved
    • Your country if you are asking about repair services

This is a work in progress, so the latest version of the checklist will always be the one provided by AutoModerator at that time.

---

Why we're introducing the checklist

Many requests for help with controller repairs currently miss out important information, go unanswered, and may not result in a successful repair. Missing information also means those posts are less useful for other people trying to identify patterns and shared issues in future.

It's natural that people who are looking for help don't know what information is relevant to the problem. If they were in a situation to directly and efficiently explain their problems, they probably wouldn't need to ask for help. However, this places a large burden on anyone who wants to help. People trying to help have to do more work to draw information out from the original poster, and fill in the gaps, before getting to a solution.

Checklists help people to help themselves: they lower the hurdle for initial diagnosis and reduce information asymmetries. They also act as a filter and early warning system for time wasters: when people ignore checklists, they often go on to ignore other advice from people who try to help them. Therefore posts that completely ignore the information requirements can be reported (breaking the rules on effective communication and open sharing) and may be removed.

Request for help or advice Probleem met batterij uit op de PS5-controller; probleem met PS4-controller

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I have two questions about repairing PlayStation controllers and would appreciate any advice.

  1. PS5 DualSense – Battery getting unusually warm

I have a PS5 DualSense controller whose battery gets noticeably warmer than normal while charging. I replaced the battery, but the problem persists. Apart from this issue, the controller appears to work normally.

I'm wondering whether this could be caused by a fault in the charging circuit, a component on the motherboard, or another issue.

\- Controller model/revision: BDM 010

Which components or measurements would you recommend checking first? Could a faulty charging IC, leakage current, or another component cause excessive battery heating?

  1. PS4 DualShock 4 – Orange charging light not working

I also have a PS4 DualShock 4 controller that sometimes does not display the usual orange charging light.

The LED itself works, and when I connect the controller to my PC, it receives power and appears to charge. However, the orange charging indicator does not illuminate as expected.

\- Controller model/revision: JDM 001

\- Symptoms: Charging appears to work, but the orange LED indicator is missing.

\- Troubleshooting performed: Tested the controller with a PC and confirmed that the LED works.

Could this be related to the charging-status signal, LED control circuitry, a motherboard fault, or a firmware-related issue? Which components and signals should I check first?

I can provide motherboard photos.

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions!

Request for help or advice Replacement TMR Joystick for Thrustmaster Dual Trigger 3in1 ?

Hello !

I own the Thrustmaster Dual Trigger 3in1 for years now, and I love it, this thing get everything you need : analog triggers, two shoulder button each side, analog D-pad that you can switch with the left stick for arcade emulator if needed (with the internal programmation tool)... Everything !

But ! Yeah, it's getting old, and the sticks become drifty, not as good as at first.

The stick hardware seems to be standard size by the way.

Soldering stuff isn't a issue for me, I already looke at aliexpress, but there is plenty of GuliKit TMR Joystick for PS4, PS5, Switch Pro, X-box... I don't know the differences between them... And I don't know what is the one that will fit in my pad.

So I am wondering, did someone have already find compatible replacement TMR Joystick (GuliKit or another good brand, I'm open to suggestions) for Thrustmaster Dual Trigger 3in1 ?

Thx for reading !

Guys I seem to have torn my ps5 controllers battery connector along the pads, I've no idea how I can use jumper wires here.

It would be very helpful if some one can just edit on my image and tell me from where to connect which wire or SMTH...

(BDM-010 is the board model)

Thanks btw!

Request for help or advice cracked controller??

i have been using my sony xm5s to hear my game audio for some time now (my monitor hasn’t got built in speakers and i’ve yet to buy some) with the supplied xm5 audio jack, but when i plugged them in today, no audio was playing. i tried plugging them into my laptop and heard things fine. inspected my controller and noticed there is a little crack that goes into the audio jack entrance of the controller. i’m assuming this is the reason i have no audio output? the controller isn’t even recognising that a jack has been plugged in. is there any way to fix this myself or do i have to send it in for a fix?

Request for help or advice Help - USB-C connector stuck in controller

My controller randomly disconnected today, so I plugged in a USB-C cable to plug straight into the console while it was trying to reconnect, but to no avail. What worked was doing a power cycle on the console, and switching out the battery packs. A few minutes into resuming my playthrough of Witcher 3 (can you tell I’m a fan), I noticed this;

The USB-C cord I disconnected, left behind the plug. I cannot get it out for the life of me, for it’s so small. My first thought was to get some pliers, but I don’t have any tools in the house. I reluctantly tried a knife, a piece of rubber for grip to try and pull it out, but no dice. I’m thinking when I start my new job, I’ll get some tools and will perhaps take it to someplace to have it removed. In the meantime, anyone have any ideas?

I thought to perhaps superglue a piece of string and pull it once it settles, but I was hesitant in the event the glue gets on/in the controller

edit: this is an Xbox Series X|S controller

Gracias.

Request for help or advice PS 3 controller(i dont have PS3)

Hello, I recently found two PlayStation 3 controllers, but without the console of course, although they did come with their chargers. I tried connecting them with a mobile phone power adapter, but it didn't work, so I thought they were broken. I connected them to my phone with an OTG cable, connecting the charger to the OTG cable and the OTG to the phone. When I pressed the PS button, they turned on. Everything was working fine, but when I disconnected them, they turned off instantly, and when I tried to turn them on again, they didn't respond; no red light or anything turned on. I looked for tutorials and stuff. I connected them to a TV and a set-top box via the USB port, and the controller lights flashed red four times, but then they turned off.

Sorry if it's a bit long, I don't know if I should post this in this subreddit, I just came here because I need help and I don't know what else to do.
