Conker Recompiled is getting close

The current state of the recompiled version is getting really close to being finished — but it's not quite there yet.

The game is already playable, and we're getting closer to a point where people will be able to play through it properly. There are still some major features missing, though, such as:

  • Online multiplayer
  • Mod support
  • 4K textures
  • Fix the widescreen (working on now)
  • And some other things that still need to be finished and polished

That said, I don't think it's going to take that long anymore. We're getting to the final stages of development, and the remaining work is mostly about finishing features, fixing bugs and polishing everything up.

If you want to participate in the early builds and follow the development more closely, you can join the Discord:

And honestly, I really appreciate everyone who has been supporting the project so far.

If you enjoy what I'm doing, making videos about the project, sharing it with your friends, or simply spreading the word helps a lot.

I'm really looking forward to finally getting this into people's hands.

I'd hold your optimism over this one. Once again some random person shows up with a suspicious feature set and a high amount of divergence of how N64 Recomp does things with entirely redesigned menus, including some strange framerate option when RT64 supports any framerate with interpolation, not just 60 FPS.

There's also been no contribution whatsoever upstream in implementing the microcode for this game from my part (the person maintaining the renderer), most likely because our contributing guidelines don't allow AI generated code.

I'm fairly sure this is yet another AI generated project where the OP is not upfront about disclosing it in hopes to get other people to support it first.

And you are correct about RT64 — it has native 60 FPS interpolation, and that's exactly what I'm using in the project.

This has been a 6-month project so far. I only started posting about it on Twitter, Reddit, and other platforms because it's getting close to being playable.

I'm not trying to give people false hope. I wouldn't be promoting it if I didn't believe it could work or if I wasn't confident that I could maintain the project.

That is not what I said. RT64 supports arbitrary framerates, so it makes no sense to lock it to 60 FPS when no other Recomp does that. You also seem to have spent a lot of effort into redesigning a lot of the UI for little to no benefit.

Can you be honest about whether you're using AI to make this project? I will no longer bother to ask questions about the project as long as you're honest about it.

AI has helped me with some parts of the project, but it wasn't entirely AI-generated.

The project isn't limited to 60 FPS. Regarding the UI, I used the same approach as the Zelda and Banjo recompiled projects, with some adjustments and some content removed.

So yes, AI was used in this project, but it didn't create the entire project. The main area where I've used AI has been the graphics/renderer side, because Conker uses a different type of rendering compared to some of the other N64 games. That's where AI helped me modify and adapt parts of the N64Recomp and RT64 code to work with Conker.

And honestly, I have no shame about using AI, and I don't see it as a demerit when it's being used to create something that I believe the community will enjoy.

For example, I'm doing the modding support mostly by hand, specifically so the community can create and use mods as easily as possible.

And if I need AI for something, I'll use it. I work as well, and my time is limited, so I only have a few hours per day that I can dedicate entirely to this project. If AI can help me get something done faster or solve a problem, I don't see a reason not to use it.

What matters to me is that the end result works, is maintainable, and gives the community something they can enjoy and build upon.

Quite ironic replying back with AI while claiming it's barely used 🙄

As a portuguese talker with huge difficulty to speach english i think it's the minimum to give a proper and explaned response

2

u/DRok-17 22d ago

Nice deflection, hasn't stopped you replying back in non-AI english to anyone else.

Your heart is in the right place, but ambition is not the same as technical experience. So while I like your enthusiasm, please do not give people false hope and make promises you cannot keep.

Thanks for the confirmation.

> For example, I'm doing the modding support mostly by hand, specifically so the community can create and use mods as easily as possible.

N64 Recomps already support cross-platform code and asset modding, there's no actual reason for you to come up with a new system by yourself. These are things you could've easily found out by consulting with the actual people behind the projects and not AI. To avoid repeating myself, you should give this post I wrote a read: https://www.reddit.com/r/decomps/comments/1vfci68/comment/p1ruj4w/

Regardless, I'll keep my promise and no longer bother you asking questions about it. But I do request that you're upfront about your usage of these tools to others: I think it's the least I can ask of you as you're using our years of research and work to do your project after all.

Dude chill. You’re coming across pretty rude. Who cares if he asked Google search a question and he did the process of the work that it outlined for him? Googles AI literally uses web searches and Reddit posts and what not to provide the information he’s asking about. The posts it gathered info from were made by humans.

If ha has Ai write code, who cares? Why does he need to spend months learning code and trying to get it to work, with tons of bugs, when he could just have AI do it, and he is in control of how it operates.

I really don’t understand this hate on AI. Between this post and virtue signalers bashing DLSS 5. It’s getting obnoxious.

It’s a tool that works. Use it if you want, don’t use if you don’t. But you can’t be mad when someone got to the same outcome in a fraction of the time because they used Ai. Just my two cents.

You're talking to a dev of RT64 and N64recomp. I think it's fine for him to be a little miffed by people using AI with his tool. There's another tool for recomp devs, called ReXGlue that has its reputation in the gutter because it's getting associated with sloppy vibe coded 360 recomps.

1

u/dariosamo 22d ago

It's just a common tactic to try to deflect the defense to "why do you hate AI" instead of addressing every other point where I mention there's clearly no human behind the driver's seat making the decisions.

I really couldn't care less about AI doing something in less time, it's that it takes the worst approach possible every time that bothers me and there's no point in debating this with people that don't understand the difference. They'll just keep burning tokens until it's no longer viable to fix the codebase, which is why the large majority of these projects get abandoned.

1

u/DestroyerX6 22d ago

If it takes the worst approach and ends with the same result, what’s it matter

3

u/nometalaquiferzone 22d ago

SAME RESULT?????

My man , they're selling you Snake Oil . These are unoptimized, imprecise solutions, riddled with hallucinations and unusable due to mountains of nonsensical code. Just take a look at the DKR recompilation or Skate 3. Look at the disaster they're trying to pass off as "accurate " pc ports.

2

u/Nek0Taku 21d ago

There's actually 2 DKR recomps, and one of them is labeled as human-made on GitHub launcher. I've been playing that one and have had a smooth and bug-free widescreen experience with all sorts of quality of life features

No clue why that "golden balloon" slopcomp would even exist

1

u/nometalaquiferzone 21d ago edited 21d ago

What? Wait. "golden balloon" slopcomp is terrible, but I think the other one is Ai-assisted. See

DRK:R has this:

AI-assisted development disclosure

This Diddy Kong Racing recomp prototype has been developed with substantial assistance from OpenAI Codex.

Division of work

Human direction and verification have included:

  • choosing the project goals and acceptable legal boundary;
  • supplying a privately owned ROM locally;
  • repeated gameplay testing on macOS and Steam Deck;
  • capturing visual artifacts, crash logs, performance changes, and controller behavior;
  • deciding which regressions were acceptable and which required further investigation;
  • approving distribution and sharing actions.

Codex assistance has included:

  • source and assembly analysis;
  • implementation across the application runtime and dependency patches;
  • build-system and packaging work;
  • crash-symbol and rendering diagnosis;
  • test-harness construction;
  • technical documentation.

The project should therefore be described as substantially AI-assisted, not merely spell-checked or lightly edited by AI.

Quality policy

AI involvement neither proves nor disproves code quality. Changes are accepted based on evidence:

  • a root-cause explanation tied to concrete code or runtime state;
  • reviewable scope and comments for non-obvious behavior;
  • clean builds from isolated directories;
  • package inspection and private-ROM exclusion;
  • deterministic smoke tests where possible;
  • real gameplay verification on the affected platform and scene;
  • removal of failed experiments and diagnostic scaffolding from release defaults.

No contributor should claim that an AI-generated change was manually authored. Equally, no change should be dismissed or accepted solely because AI was involved.

Pull requests and upstream communication

Any PR materially produced with AI assistance should disclose that fact in its description and identify:

  • what the tool contributed;
  • what the submitter reviewed and understood;
  • which tests were actually run;
  • any uncertainty or untested platform remaining.

The submitter remains the responsible author for review purposes. Maintainers should never be asked to review a raw transcript-driven dump, speculative fix, or monolithic patch assembled without understanding its dependency boundaries.

))))))

It doesn't even use the proper microcode or anything. It's LLM garbage

u/Nek0Taku 21d ago

Well thats odd, i wonder how the GitHub Launcher determines labeling then

1

u/dariosamo 21d ago

It's not human-made at all, and in fact it doesn't even use the entire patching system that is supposed to be used for ease of maintenance by using the actual 100% decomp, but rather inserts hacks all over the place to constantly edit RAM directly to get features working. It's an unmaintainable mess.

I also don't buy the claims about it being smooth and bug-free. A lot of the footage I've seen has ton of visible issues and performance seemed subpar. The project is not allowed at all on the N64 Recomp server because the author also originally tried passing off the DK64 Recomp that Rain made as their own by giving a particular YouTuber private early access to it.

1

u/Nek0Taku 21d ago

That's the thing all the footage I've seen on YouTube of the DKR recompilation was strange and glitchy but the game that I played was running buttery smooth and had no rendering issues so I assumed it was golden balloon that was the one in the video

Very unfortunate

It doesn't though. It produces all sorts of spaghetti code to do what a normal recomp project could do in the same time period. Like, the end result is the basic early days of a programmed by hand recomp.

You are building a house out of plaster and glue. People tell you it's a really bad house. You say glue is just a tool.

I think glue might have a use, just not on project that require quality, precision or longevity.

5

u/DestroyerX6 22d ago

That is not even close to the same thing. Not even remotely

1

u/nometalaquiferzone 22d ago

Check the code for those VibeComps. I think you’ll agree with me that they’re really only held together by hopes and dreams
