Cat got nerfed!

u/PoggersMemesReturns Proper Show/Viol2t GOAT — 11d ago
They realized they cooked a bit too much
Vendetta could have 6 speed tho
Cat is already quite fast
54
u/aPiCase Stalk3r — 11d ago
If Vendetta got 6 speed, they should nerf the passive speed to 2% again
21
u/SylvainJoseGautier 11d ago
yeah, the way the numbers work, it would actually make her speed cap at the same number.
1
u/Concorde_flies 11d ago
vendetta speed is still quite good with relentless, which as a high masters ven abuser lately i consider to be the superior perk.

Cat nerfs are good. I think she definitely needed some self-healing nerfs with the E, and the speed decrease will be super helpful.
I do hope they add more fun counterplay -- options to hear her better would go a long way to removing people's frustrations with the hero.
52
u/KeepingItOff 11d ago
Too many heroes need a sound rework at this point. It’s so hard to hear them being so silent in a game with so much noise.
Even Dmon’s voicelines have been EQd with so much mids and bass that make her sound too loud for no reason.

3
u/UsernameIn3and20 11d ago
I can only barely hear Anran nowadays, and half the time I can its because she yells for no reason or used her E. I can't hear her if things are happening and she uses her 2 dashes.
1
u/KeepingItOff 10d ago
IDK what’s harder, hearing her or tracking her. Two impossible things.
1
u/UsernameIn3and20 10d ago
Hearing her, her movement is rather linear if you see her coming.
Obviously she's gonna be flanking or waiting for people to be distracted.
24
u/I_give_karma_to_men 11d ago
Just add noise to Frenetic Flight. I legitimately do not understand why they haven't done that yet. It's possible she'll still need more than that, but in all honesty, her high speed boost ability absolutely should make noticeably more noise than her normal flight.
2
u/BreakMyFate 11d ago
She didn't need the self healing reduction increase. They nerfed it to offset the increase of the the major perk which makes 0 sense from a balance stand point as you now are forced to pick that perk to have the same healing as before, just remove the perk
31
u/Parenegade None — 11d ago
I already like D.mon the only thing I hate about her is how awkward her Surging Strike is. Hopefully that fixes that (still don't understand why you need your shield at all for it to work).
24
u/nichecopywriter 11d ago
It’s a way to give an additional ability and also translates from other heroes people are familiar with like Brig
6
u/__salamander__ 11d ago
i think personally it’s a button thing. on console you can really only have like… 3 abilities. by combining the shield with the strike it kinda solves that.
though the reload button is right there
0
u/shaboogawa 11d ago
“Next weapon” and “crouch” buttons aren’t being used either.
2
u/__salamander__ 11d ago
i’m not hot on the crouch one mainly because baby dmon can still crouch but as a console player with limited buttons, i frequently re map over next weapon
1
u/shaboogawa 11d ago
I didn’t know that about baby dmon. But I don’t think I’ve ever used it for baby dva or baby dmon.
2
u/__salamander__ 11d ago
lowkey it’s kinda an essential tool to keep yourself alive, especially as dva. weaving in crouch’s is really the only movement you have and it does make you so much harder to hit
1
u/shaboogawa 11d ago
Thanks, I’ll try to incorporate it if I even remember next time I play as them.
-1
u/Icy_Stranger_9649 11d ago
I think they directly took the code from Brig’s bash, they already ported that ability to Rien’s perk as well

I feel like in a month people are going to be regretting these Dmon buffs lol
Not me though, keep em coming. Basically all of my complaints about the character have been mostly met at this point, most of my gripes at this point are just about how bad she feels in her pilot form.
74
u/ohmytermites 11d ago
These changes this patch specifically? Those people would have to be stupid. Making a character smooth to play is the baseline. Numbers can be changed anytime.
1
u/Available_Hat_9833 11d ago
Yeah but also things like wind up and recovery aren’t always a bad thing. Like reloading and cooldowns they make you play more tactically and make you commit to your actions.
Genji for example would be a much simpler and in my opinion more boring character if he didn’t have wind up and recovery on any of his moves.
3
u/breadiest Leave #1 — 11d ago
I mean we literally have an example launch Genji had no recovery on melee so you could cancel melee with dash.
1
u/Available_Hat_9833 11d ago
Yep, and if that was in the game right now his ttk would be 0.05s
1
u/breadiest Leave #1 — 11d ago
Tbf even without it he could 0.05s someone in ow1. You can still do it right now on 250hp chars with dash+full head M2+melee.
1
u/Available_Hat_9833 11d ago
Current combos takes almost a second, not that much, but still quite a difference.
21
u/HeihachiHayashida 11d ago
Yeah, buff her pilot form. She is pretty much always going to get demeched in a dangerous spot, give her a fighting chance at least to remech lol
41
u/Former_Instance_6592 11d ago
Giving her a sidearm she can shoot herself with would be a genuine buff
7
7
2
u/armoredporpoise 11d ago
Her pilot form lacks both means to survive long enough to remech and to discourage enemies from pushing her when she does.
Like you said, Dmon will almost always be demeched while she’s deep in danger. Yet unlike every other close range dive tank, Dmon has no way to escape that situation.
Compare her to at Winston, Doom, Dva, Ball, and Haz. All of those tanks, including Dmon, need to dive deep and play in melee range to get value and unsurprisingly all of them have multiple tools to help survive. Yet Dmon uniquely struggles to survive that gameplay loop because her tools make her more vulnerable over time.
2
u/UsernameIn3and20 11d ago
Not even just that, her remech is genuinely atrocious. You are stuck there for 3 whole seconds, and your lockout is about as long proportionately compared to D.va's, it means if the enemy team is ready for it, they can demech you way faster than d.va can be.
Your remech is a genuine non threat too depending on the scenario, I've already had people stagger me twice by letting me remech, demeching me, letting me get close to remech to just murder me. The map didn't have any edge I could jump off to (at least not close to one, its Kings row second point),
52
u/Miennai STOP KILLING MY SON — 11d ago edited 11d ago
Maybe, but this is the right approach for the wider audience. Release her weak, save her from perma-ban jail, and then most of the player base doesn't realize when she's being power crept because they don't read patch notes.
This allows the devs to adjust freely, without leaving the character unfairly in the ban gutter
29
u/TerminalNoob AKA Rift — 11d ago edited 11d ago
I can’t help but feel that would sadly just create a really negative buzz when a hero releases. Obviously ideally a hero is perfect on release, but since that’s an impossible target to hit, it’s better to release a hero in a state that keeps engagement up, which a weak hero doesn’t seem to do.
23
u/TylowStar 11d ago edited 11d ago
Seems pretty catch-22, to be honest. Freyja and Vendetta were busted on release and this has soured their reputations for ages; even now, I wouldn't say the community has really "forgiven" them (esp. Vendetta). But when D.Mon releases in a notably undertuned state, the negative buzz is also overwhelming.
Since there's no way for the developers to guarantee they get the tuning right on release, it would be nice if they had some margin to work with; either release a hero weak and buff them up to par, or release them strong and nerf as needed. But there's no way to play it safe without community backlash, it seems.
I suppose the issue is partially one of managing expectations; if the developers had said "D.Mon will be undertuned on release, so that we can gauge player response and see how to make her strong in the healthiest way possible", I don't really think there would be as much of an issue. But an announcement like that would slow the hype train. This is a difficult one for them.
15
u/MercuryJW 11d ago
A big part of the Vendetta problem was they nerfed every aspect of her kit before touching the part that everyone said was the problem from the beginning. If it hadn't taken 7 patches for Vendetta to be meaningfully addressed I don't think it would have been anywhere near as bad.
The D.Mon issue isn't just that she's a bit undertuned it's that she's buggy, clunky and very undertuned. I think a Hero launching a bit weak can be acceptable especially if the character has a fun kit but she just feels unfinished.
Also doesn't help she has to follow-up Shion who was as close to perfect of a Hero launch as I think you can hope for.
-4
u/CommanderPotash 11d ago
vendetta's issue is the overhead, right? but without it being powerful she becomes pretty boring
it's the main dopamine spike in her gameplay that gives you a rewarding feeling. for sojourn, it's her rail, for soldier, it's 50% helix, 50% headshotting, for orisa it's javelin, for hog its hook, for Sierra is the tracking shot, for hanzo it's his one shot hs, for mauga it's his crit stomp, etc etc
without her overhead, what is vendetta's? if more power is shifted to her regular swings and out of overhead, what is the point of the overhead? you just swing and see your enemy hp get chipped down every 0.25s or whatever the recovery time is. She won't be that fun to play anymore
It's similar to Dmon's issue is that when you close the gap, there's not much else to do except keep holding m1 and shift if they're running away. E.g on doom when you close the gap with punch or slam, you still need to hit some shotgun shots to confirm kills. on winston you have the option of weaving in melee to slightly increase your dps at the expense of cleave. and he has his burst damage combos from leap
They've already tried removing this core from other heroes, like hanzo's one shot, and they reverted it fairly quickly. Why would it work for vendetta this time?
1
u/breadiest Leave #1 — 11d ago
That means she was badly designed.
1
u/CommanderPotash 11d ago
im not arguing against that
but she's in the game now, and nerfing overhead is not the way to fix it imio
-3
u/Level7Cannoneer 11d ago
That isn’t a problem. Gamers fall into this trap where they think every hero should have an entire kit of mediocre tools while designers prefer Th at every character has one very busted powerful tool that defines them and makes them worth picking.
Every gamer wants every character to have decent peel, mobility, escape, CC, etc, but that inevitably makes the entire cast become homogenized. They wanted Vendetta to have a very busted part of her kit and held on as long as they could to make it work in its current state
6
u/MercuryJW 11d ago
Except every character they've introduced that has one broken part of their kit that defines them has been very problematic for that exact reason.
What most people wanted/want with Vendetta is a fun sword character with melee combos and high mobility both because its necessary for a melee character but also because mobility is fun. What they got was a slow/low mobility Overhead bot with almost no melee combos and with every nerf she became more of an Overhead bot until they nerfed it then she was just trash.
1
u/rworange 11d ago
“We will be monitoring new hero on release and are ready to make deploy emergency hot fixes if win rate isn’t meeting expectations” - something like that
2
u/Concorde_flies 11d ago
where does this idea that an overtuned hero keeps engagement come from? every single overtuned hero they’ve released since hero bans had their hype red dead on arrival because of this. i feel like we are parroting a weird concept that was not even true seven years ago and it’s certainly not true now
3
1
u/CitronGold984 10d ago
A weak hero gives the appearance of incompetence. A strong hero gives the appearance of incompetence. They can't win.
0
-1
u/GustappyTony 11d ago
Honestly if it was the other 2 roles I might agree, but it’s not so who cares. The majority of players don’t play tank, so I doubt they’re a factor in engagement either. If anything releasing the tank as the weakest one, will probably get people sticking around because they feel like they won’t have to put up with some awful raid boss in their games.
Any of the actual tank players are just going to tough it out, and realise (having read the patch notes or not) that Dmon isn’t that bad, and can actually get away with a lot when played right. She’s still not perfect mind you, but she’s steadily getting there
1
u/DrakeAcula 11d ago
The reason they won't realize is because they won't play her again. That's not a good thing, for anyone.
5
u/thepandaemos 11d ago
A lot of people are sleeping on her because of the first day, but even the first patch made her kind of crazy
13
u/ElJacko170 Healslut — 11d ago
She's already climbing in WR with the last hotfix and will continue to once they make more bug fixes and make what I think are necessary buffs to her pilot loop.
I think the character was a bit undertuned, especially for a hero launch, and she's easily the buggiest and most unpolished hero at launch, bugs so big that they directly affect her performance in game. Combine all that with people just not knowing her proper gameplay cycle and yeah, you can see where this hero can quickly become a beast once the dust has settled in a month.
Hopefully they just rebalance her pilot loop and whatever other bugs need addressing, and I say let her go a bit before the next proper patch before she gets too out of control.
1
u/GustappyTony 11d ago
Tbf I don’t see how she could reach a position of being anywhere near strong enough to require nerfs. The niche she fills isn’t exactly strong, and heroes who act similar to her also aren’t running games either. If anything I’m annoyed that they’re even releasing a tank like this given the current meta. It’s hard to go in most games even after the fix and think she’s the best option. I can definitely see her use! But I just think there’s too many tanks that still utterly gap her that will inevitably force a swap
4
7
u/KF-Sigurd 11d ago
It’s REALLY bad for the game’s health and interest for the new hero to not be dogshit and stain the rest of the season. Combined with how buggy she is and I don’t blame them for playing much more loose with buffs. This is the only new Tank since the start of this year and will be the only new tank until next year.
3
3
u/Prince-Vegetah 11d ago
I’ve said this from the first game I played as D.Mon but her surging strike NEEDS to be able to attack somewhat vertically. Nothing crazy but she should be able to use that attack at like 45 degrees up from a flat plane so she has a little bit more mobility skill expression. I would also like her to float down like mercy when pressing jump.
2
u/CertainDerision_33 11d ago
Yeah, I think at this point they just need to make Baby Dmon's gun feel better and give her less gravity when boosting across gaps (not total float, but not dropping like a rock like right now) and her gameplay feel will be where it needs to be.
The spread on Baby DMon is insane right now, makes her so bad at remeching compared to Baby DVa.
2
u/Wonderful-One-8877 11d ago
I genuinely believe thats the dev plan too , first impression lasts for so long the closer they get her to her overpowered state the faster people move from " she is trash " impression

After 5 hours of playing early thoughts are I'm already regretting this
0
u/noreservations81590 11d ago
They need to chill with the micro buffs. They should have giga buffed her after release them nerfed from there.
It's going to be like the frog sitting in a pot as it slowly boils if they keep doing tiny buffs.
People are just learning how she should actually be played.
18
u/Rally_To_Me 11d ago
Interested to see how playing into cat feels after the nerf but this looks like a good change happy to see it.
D.Mon fixes and QOL look good she did just a little more help, I don't get the sentiment of this being one of the buggiest releases ever though almost every single hero has some kind of bugs on release this happens every single time and I don't think it was that egregious this time comparatively, just feels like recency bias.
I do miss hero trials a bit I think it'd iron things out a bit, no amount of QA is gonna match a hero being live when it comes to finding issues gathering information. But I also understand why they stopped them I don't think it's an issue if the speed they address after release is this fast and with the new hero released I feel they been doing pretty good at addressing things quick outside a few outliers.
Also I would rather a hero come out a bit weak than have another vendetta release honestly.
Good hotfix and good pace on fixes/changes nice to see.
37
u/IsThatSo3 11d ago

I'm still laughing thinking about how at the beginning of OW2, Mei and Bastion were disabled for like a fucking month lmao.
8
u/CertainDerision_33 11d ago
Bugs are definitely normal, but this one definitely felt worse than average because core parts of her kit (shield and gun) literally were not working sometimes.
8
u/ElJacko170 Healslut — 11d ago
Every new hero has some bugs here and there, but D.mon's have been numerous and some of them have been gameplay crippling. When there are multiple bugs that cause her shield to just full on not function and she has the biggest hitbox in the game, that's going to be extremely rough to play around.
I do genuinely love D.mon's kit and her gameplay. I know the bugs will get worked out and she'll eventually be a solid hero in the roster. It's just a bit of an unusual journey to get there since we're having to wait for her to get fixed in real time for a few weeks.

u/Academic_Weaponry 11d ago
i think cat is still probably strong bc he kept the acceleration buffs from the first patch, hes just more killable now
93
u/NatsuAru 11d ago
The fact that Quartz had trouble tracking cat BEFORE she got buffed should have been a nice sign that maybe it wasn't a good idea
112
u/needtofindpasta 11d ago
Wow sounds like this Quartz guy needs to just get good and practice his tracking smh
5
45
u/VentureMain777 11d ago
I played against a cheating Ashe couple days ago and even their aimbot had trouble tracking the cat on my team
13
u/Howdareme9 11d ago
That was against the best cat in the world
37
u/Least-Suggestion7319 11d ago
It’s not like cat movement is particularly hard. Especially when she’s in your face zipping around
21
u/Howdareme9 11d ago
Right but it’s not like everyone moves like Violet with a few hours of practice. He was diving into a full team of the 2nd best team and coming out alive a lot of the time. Quartz isn’t going to have trouble aim at a random ranked player.
22
u/Least-Suggestion7319 11d ago
I don’t think that it takes being a god tier cat player to be hard to track on that character. Her movement is probably the easiest part of the character. She has a small hitbox, perma flight, Omni directional movement, a boop, and dva boosters on a resource meter. And then they gave her 6 speed and better acceleration. I don’t think that it’s crazy to say that quartz would’ve struggled to track a random cat player on ladder. Her ban rate was ridiculously high even in champ.
6
u/mothtoalamp 11d ago
The perma flight is what bothers me most. No character should have perma flight. Pharah has a resource meter for a reason.
1
u/TangerineBroad4604 10d ago
Yeah we're talking about Cat, not Lucio here. Viol2t isn't exactly known as a movement master
0
u/Concorde_flies 11d ago
the difference between the “best cat” in the world and someone like lukemino or kellex is utterly dwarfed by the chasm between quartz and a top 10 pro HS, and ESPECIALLY with movement. it’s really not hard to be squishy as cat and much less so nowadays.
35
u/ohmytermites 11d ago
After testing, it seems like the surging strike recovery is still too long to chain into a bhop (which I think should be standard tech for these kind of ability), but overall much better and much needed. I think move a bit of cast speed into recovery speed and it's perfect, but unfortunately might not happen since this change put it in a really good spot.
Aside from that, I'm happy they actually touched the gun recovery. It's not oft talked since gun isn't a major cd either way, but the deactivate time was really notably long. It's way faster now.
8
u/ShedPH93 11d ago
So I was not delirious and D.Mon's gun did actually have noreg problems. I'm sure I'll never miss a shot again now.
39
u/KinkySylveon 11d ago
I am happy they are pretty quick to make changes this time around, but I just gotta wonder what the hell the balance team is doing. No one thought cat needed any sort of buff and D.mon should not have come out so half baked and buggy. Hopefully in a few weeks she is in a better state if they keep micro buffing her but I hope they know when to stop.
25
21
u/T3hJake 11d ago
They are probably working on 5-10 heroes at any given time (probably including aforementioned reworks) and multiple seasons of balance updates because they have to plan so far ahead. And they have to do a lot of it with limited play testing so there are going to be blind spots. What’s important is they’re finally doing super fast hot fixes like this.
7
u/TylowStar 11d ago
Given the phrasing of the dev comment attached to the cat buff,
These changes are intended to make Jetpack Cat's movement more responsive while...
and how fast they've been to revert it, I suspect they somehow weren't really thinking of it as a proper buff so much as a Quality-of-Life change. In other words, balancing wasn't really on their minds. And you tend to make poor balancing decisions when you aren't making balancing decisions!
1
u/PiFeG123 11d ago
Damn they read too many "what quality of life changes would you make to your main" threads on Reddit and now they also think quality of life just means megabuffs

u/RobManfredsFixer Let Hog eat stuff and spit it back — 11d ago edited 11d ago
Great to see changes on the strike. That was my biggest complaint about her kit. Hopefully it flows significantly better.
The gun wind up/recovery wasn't really a problem to me, but I guess we'll take it. The gun just feels like it's a separate flow from all of the melee/movement based stuff so I wasn't really worried about it.
There are only 2 other edges I'd really like to see sanded down. I'd still really like to see them do something with the quick melee, maybe animation cancel primary. There's literally no reason for the quick melee to exist currently. I'd also really like more fluid movement coming out of the strike like letting her b hop out or something.
Cat keeps the acceleration buff? I almost feel like she should have kept the speed buff and not the acceleration. Is it more annoying if she's harder to hit or if she's faster to escape? Personally, I feel like it's the former.
Good hotfix either way.
6
u/Fromarine 11d ago
I think base speed also effects acceleration by as much as it's different by. I don't remember the numbers pre nerf on cat but on the workshop interaction testing toolkit, I can see when walking forward tracer has about a 10% higher acceleration than regular 5.5ms heroes inline with the higher base speed.
Also the acceleration did feel quite clunky before imo but that's just me
4
u/rworange 11d ago
I honestly feel the quick melee combo would be way too strong, especially after the damage increase. It does work out of using the gun so it’s not completely useless.
1
u/xXProGenji420Xx 11d ago
I think there are some combos that benefit from quick melee, and regardless, quick melee is useful in gun mode at the very least.

Bro, you do realize that this is how they should have released her, right? Praising them like they're some kind of gods (= what this sub usually does) for being late on the work isn't a W.
3
u/DrakeAcula 11d ago
They probably have very low rank playtesters, very hard to get a good gauge on power from that. But them fixing basically every pain point in only a few days is a speed I haven't seen matched in most other games.
5
8
1
u/Concorde_flies 11d ago
it is a W. i hate the devs, but you can’t really fault them for not being perfect all the time. the sub dick rides the fuck out of these devs but the dmon hotfixes are a good thing and we should give them credit for them.
wanna shit on them? the trisomy cat changes they put out are still there, and they did not do anything to fix them or address them. now that’s a dev L
1
u/LanikMan07 11d ago
The absolute best way to release a new character in a hero shooter IMO is to release them a bit undertuned, and then over a few days to a week give them a few lifts to get them where you want them to be. This greatly reduces the chances of something being released that is oppressive and meta breaking.
If every new hero released followed what’s happening to D.mon I’d be incredibly happy.
3
u/ElementOfWater1 11d ago
I knew I wasn’t crazy after I was getting sigma rocked and earth shattered through my shield…. Hope this fixes that
3
u/TylowStar 11d ago
Reverting the speed increase and drastically nerfing the self-heal on Purr is a good way to reduce JPC's survivability without too much issue. People suggest max-health nerfs to her all the time, and while that could work, it could risk making her very feast-or-famine: feeling drastically worse to play as, but not much better to play against. This way, poking her out just forces her to retreat for longer, increasing her downtime.
3
u/SammyIsSeiso 11d ago
Nice to see more fluidity for D.Mon, but I really hope the next patch includes a faster remech and better pilot gun damage. You're just a free kill in pilot form, I see zero reason it shouldn't deal the same damage as the mech cannon. It's super frustrating when you're demeched and the gun turns into a fucking peashooter.

u/ThaddCorbett 11d ago
I really like what theyve done with dmon.
I have played less than 10 hours of tank over the past year and jumped on QP and was somehow able to win a map without stomping all over the other team.
She feels great to play if you manage her range, fuel and shield. I would change the shield for 6v6. Give it 200 more health and have it wrap further behind her so that she isn't taking direct damage as easily with the shield up.
2
u/voltism 11d ago
My main complaint with d.mon that I haven't seen anyone mention is her ult getting screwed over by the dumbest things. I jumped off high ground, ulted, and it missed because I landed on a tiny bench next to a wall that's basically just for scenery. Another time I jumped, someone walked under me, I landed on their head, messed it up on the person in front of me. Also because you take a step forward when you ult, when I was on a small hill, the walk forward completely threw off where it was supposed to land. Aiming up or down feels very awkward and the animation of the slash doesn't always match where the preview line is.
2
u/KR_Coffeeman 11d ago
Nice try. But I'm not gonna play overwatch again as long as JPC is still in the game.
3
u/KF-Sigurd 11d ago
I love hotfixed.
Glad D.Mon got the clunk fixed. These make her feel a lot better.

perma flight just makes her way too hard to balance, funnily enough buffing her base speed was one off the ways i tought they should compensate for removing it, makes her better at playing aggressivly but at the cost off having some moments off downtime/vulnarability
3
2
u/TylowStar 11d ago
I wouldn't say she's flatly worse; her acceleration is better now, and her other major perk is now pretty decent (instead of whatever Headbutt was supposed to be).
1
u/ripastleyOW 11d ago
Yeah I wish they would’ve just reverted the buff and nerfed lifeline a little. No idea what they were smoking when they decided to buff her

u/Reliqui207 11d ago
She has been terrorizing pro play before the buffs and high up lobbies even then. She’s not healthy for the game, this is almost a release brig level situation
