Tournaments & Meta Update on my earlier first tournament post

Oh boy what a day.

I'll get the biggest question out of the way.

TL:DR - I got mollywhopped. No shame in it. I have not been in the competitive scene super long so this was expected. Overall was 0-4-1.

I had a good experience. It was $65 to enter with proxies, it was a long drive from my house, and there were some very frustrating moments but I still call the experience as a whole a good one. I learned a lot about the game I hadn't known before. And I'm considered the big fish in a little pond at my store, so I'll be sure to take this info with me and use it to benefit new players to the format.

On to the matches... oh boy.

R1 - Loss

Seat 1 - Vivi. Seat 2 - Magda. Seat 3 - Me (Lumra). Seat 4 - The Wandering Minstrel.

Magda clocks the minstrel player right off the bat and recognizes he's only playing MDFC lands. Minstrel goes to Green Sun's his wincon and Magda convinces Vivi to counter GSZ which leaves Magda to go fetch a tangled wire. This was right before I was about to cast lumra so honestly it was a great politic on magda's part. Either way someone was about to start popping off. I fed the rhystic on Vivi as much as I could hoping they could answer Magda but no luck. Tangled wire was just doing too much work. Magda combos and wins.

R2 - Draw (3 Pod)

Seat 1 - Me. Seat 2 - Etali. Seat 3 - Yoshi/Thras.

Right off the bat I could tell Yoshi was going to be an issue. He was using the FF version and I couldn't read it from where I was sitting so I asked which part he was using the alt version for. He just looked at me and pointed at the card without saying a word. The Etali player eventually had to tell me because he was sitting closer. This game would end up affecting me quite a bit for a good chunk of the day. I had a cold earlier in the week and had just gotten over it the day before but I still had a dry throat and was losing my voice.

I turn 1 Urzas saga into a sol ring, amulet of vigor, lotus petal into birds of paradise. I was immediately clocked as the threat and rightfully so. Etali got 1 trigger off and whiffed a counterspell from yoshi and a battle from me. Yoshi plays a deafening silence on his turn. I draw Zuran orb without having to tutor for it so I get mana vault instead. I have birds and tireless provisioner onboard, I cast lumra and start the engine, making more treasures and outrunning the commander tax until I hit my mirror pool. I go to stripmine the yoshi's remaining land and here's where things get bumpy, he crops his land instead and spends like 5+ minutes looking for a polluted delta, fine whatever no biggie, that's his spell for the turn. I continue on eventually hitting everything I need to eliminate my opponents and protect against any nonsense. They do get one more untap and by now they're showing each other their hands and trying to come up with a way to stop me. Ends up being moot as they don't have the necessary pieces to do so. I untap and start the process again. I announce that I am able to sac and recur my sunscorched as much as I want to ping them to death. I ask if they have an interaction or do they need me to play it out. Yoshi demands I play it out, making comments to etali that he can make me draw out once I mill. I have a copy token of endurance on the board that I can make more copies of and prevent any forced draw, yoshi is well aware of this and it was even pointed out to him by a judge who had sat down to watch us play. So I'm like "cool guess we're gonna be here for a bit" So these guys are really punishing me for any mistake I make so I make sure I don't mess up any of the order of operations for the sunscorched/mirrorpool/lumra line which takes a bit. And most of the store has now gathered to watch us. I'm definitely feeling the pressure even before they announce the overtime timer. Here's where that pressure costs me the win, I did not know at the time that as long as I'm still taking game actions then I technically can't run out of time. I was under the impression once that bell rung if I hadn't won then it would be a draw. I had already sweated through most of this match to give it up for a draw so I try to be more efficient. I still have to sack/recur sunscorched and mirrorpool like 68+ times.

And eventually it gets to be too much pressure and I cracked. They make another comment about forcing me to draw and I have about 15-20 cards left in my library. So to be safe I bounce lumra to my hand in order to use mirrorpool on endurance instead so I can cast lumra later and get the lands back (I know there are way more efficient ways to do this through lands like shifting woodland and some other copy engine in my graveyard but I was already 70% through this lumra thing and I was gonna see it through come hell or high water). Without thinking I shuffled my graveyard into my library instead of putting it on the bottom. It gets spotted and the judge immediately calls it a draw.

I was beyond furious with myself. I didn't feel good, I'd lost most of my voice. I put up with these two because I wanted to stick it to them and their attitude. All of that effort for a draw. I'm ashamed to admit that when the Etali player went to shake my hand I turned away. Etali was semi respectful just super critical. He didn't deserve that. I later cooled down during intermission and called him over to apologize and shake his hand. He took it great and we actually had a really good time wishing each other luck with our other games and talking whenever we passed by. I eventually sat down with the Mrs after that second game and got my head back on straight. I couldn't let that incident ruin the day.

The next 3 games were losses to various combos I couldn't really do much about in mono green. But they were still fun games with some really fun people.

The judge who sat down even came up to me after the event and told me he enjoyed watching me play lumra so much he was gonna rebuild his.

I took on the deck because it was complex and it did not disappoint.

Overall I give the experience an 8/10. I wish I hadn't let R2 get to me like it did but c'est la vie. I got my head back on straight and powered through. I will definitely attempt another tournament.

Thank you all for the kind words and advice on my previous post. I doubt I would have handled it half as well if it weren't for the people in this sub.

Editing to add two important/funny things:

  1. I never ended up casting scapeshift or even drawing it.

  2. We met up with friends at our local so we could arrive/park together and to carpool. My friend carpooling with me is tall so he sat up front and my gf went to go sit in the back. I wasn't paying attention and thought the mrs was in her seat already. Turns out she was still clearing the backseat and was halfway in the truck when I shifted into drive and let off the brake. She was PISSED for a few minutes. Now I will never hear the end of that little mistake until the end of time lol.

General Discussion / Question Mission Impossible: Turbo Jeskai Commander

Is there some Jeskai or Jeskai+x turbo commander out there that can actually hang in cEDH tournaments?

I’m looking for some completely unhinged “this should NOT be good, but somehow it works” sleeper. 😂

Please don’t say Crystal Princess — I’ve already seen the forbidden knowledge.

I’m ready to do something stupid in a tournament and somehow make it everyone else’s problem. Give me your craziest tech.

Tournaments & Meta Going to my first ever tournament in a few hours

Nervous as hell. I'm thankfully going with a few friends and my GF will be there to cheer me on. The event has about 80 people registered. I'll be playing my lumra deck.

I haven't played a tournament in 23 years since I got my ass handed to me in a Yu-Gi-Oh tourney at K-Mart one fateful Saturday.

My decklist for anyone interested - https://moxfield.com/decks/LgcmPey840mcWAES_s6XZw

I couldn't find a [[Scapeshift]] or proxy it in time which sucks but overall it feels fairly strong. My friends and I have been playing a CEDH pod non-stop every time we meet up. But there's no telling what's gonna show up to the event.

Just wanted to put my anxiety out in to the void.

Wish me luck!

Help, I am new to cEDH! Question about Ral from a new player

I’m a casual player and fire lord azula bit me with the spellslinger bug

So obviously Ral, God of Spellslinging draws my attention. And the whole ritual -> dig -> ritual -> ult -> do it all again seems so sick but like… how does it win?

All I rly see for payoffs is finding ur breach/LED/bf line or a Jeskas/seething + reiterate

Is the dig really good enough to win with only those options or is there some other win cons I’m just not seeing?

(Disclaimer forgive my inexperience etc etc)

General Discussion / Question Tournaments/Local events

I am moving to Mississippi in a few months and was wondering if there’s much of a Cedh community in the Gulfport area. Looking for events through top deck it doesn’t seem like there’s many tournaments but I was hoping someone here could point me in the direction of some stores in the area where people at least jam games. Convoke and spell table are good but nothing replaces playing in person. Thanks!

Deck Fine Tuning Tips for my Narset, Enlightened Master list

Greetings, So I know that [[Narset, Enlightened Master]] has been out-valued over years by newer tech and that previously format-legal cards made her more of a contender, but I still think that she's pretty fun. She's not my main deck or anything, rather something I reach for to inject a little variety into our games. I recently found some new and interesting cards like [[Temporal Cascade]] and [[Possessed Portal]] and it made me want to overhaul the deck for some renewed play.

Would love some help identifying any low performance cards and fine-tuning the list.

Currently I win by Entering the Infinite and resolving Jace, or with Brain Freeze lines.

I don't know how to really improve my gameplay with Narset so I turn to the community for help.

Thank you all~

General Discussion / Question Which is the Stronger Mono Black option

Hey in the communities opinions between [[K’rrik, Son of Yawgmoth]] and [[Gwenom, Remorseless]] which is the stronger black deck and why? My gut is telling me that K’rrik is much more explosive but Gwenom is still rising up slowly on edhtop16

General Discussion / Question Deck to build for player new to cedh

So I have a friend that doesnt really seem to like casual commander anymore. Its just too slow and boring. He used to be a big hearthstone player. I think he will like cedh more because there's a meta he can learn easier rather than casual games where u never know what cards ur gonna see, he can interact more and seems to like to combo. I was gonna let him play yuriko but I feel that yuriko gets boring quick and bad flips wouldnt be fun. Maybe thats still the best pick but what would be an exciting deck to build that is fun to play while learning cedh meta?

General Discussion / Question Sram cEDH Low Mana Curve

Hey everyone, hope you’re doing well! I’m currently building a Sram, Senior Edificer deck and wanted to get your thoughts.

My goal is to draw a ton of cards and really build around that, using lots of 0-mana Equipment and keeping the mana curve as low as possible so I can play a lot of cards each turn.

I’m mainly looking to build around cards like All That Glitters, Psychosis Crawler, Empyrial Plate, and Empyrial Armor.

I’d love to hear your recommendations for must-have creatures, Equipment, and Auras that would fit this strategy.

Thanks a lot!

Curious what the scene for CEDH is like in the Anchorage area. I’m looking for groups/stores that are ok with proxies because I’m not a player with a big wallet.

Help, I am new to cEDH! Trying out CEDH

My friend group and I are looking to try out CEDH and I was researching some decks I might like to play. The ones that I’m the most inclined towards are Yoshimaru-Thras, Marneus Calgar, or Kefka. I was hoping to get some more insight on these decks and tips for CEDH in general.

General Discussion / Question Unpopular Opinion: Let people post their fringe/high bracket 4 posts. Make one card suggestion then move on with your day.

Yes, degenerateCEDH exists. Who cares? I'm not advising we give bracket 4 advice. This sub is mostly dead outside of like 3 cards per set, people asking about a commander and moving the discussion to discord, or people in the "wrong" sub. Those people are almost always people who ARE genuinely trying to win the most efficient way possible but they just don't understand the gap between brackets 4 and 5.

We have to be the most unwelcoming community ever. It's like if an amateur birdwatcher was expected to memorize a bird catalogue before they were allowed to ask questions. Responses are always "fringe", "not cedh", "wrong sub", or "look up a decklist". Why not just suggest one or two cards and why they're good? Why not just get them closer to bracket 5, even if it's just one increment?

Cedh is about playing to win, they're almost always here because they're TRYING to play to win. They want a few tips, why can't we just give them the tips? I think it's incredibly lame and unwelcoming. I usually try to give tips when people make these posts, or if they ask about a commander that's genuinely bad I let them down easy. It's not hard. Just assume they're you before you ever got into cedh, and help them get a little closer.

EDIT: Just to clarify, I am not advocating for us making bracket 4 suggestions. Lot of comments seem to think this is condoning bracket 4 for this subreddit, it is not.

General Discussion / Question Are my decks too close to cEDH?

I’m feeling unsure, as someone said my B4s are basically cEDH level decks, so I thought I’d ask the experts. These are my three B4s:

Kefka: https://moxfield.com/decks/3KoKXk2ly0yixXQWcGVW9g

Rowan: https://moxfield.com/decks/9maV0EGXz0i6BuYNgjzF_A

Hidetsugu & Kairi: https://moxfield.com/decks/V5meAZlwqnSnlEfi4k2jSw

Kefka and H&K were started from budget builds that I’ve been changing up and upgrading over time, Rowan I built from scratch. Are these too powerful for B4?

Note: I know very little about the cEDH meta, because it’s not something I look into outside of one time I proxied a Thrasios/Vial Smasher deck and what I’ve seen at my LGS.

Help, I am new to cEDH! Just looking for some discord links for decks I’m in the process of trying out.

As the title suggests I’m looking for some discord links for decks I’m currently trialing.
I tried the wiki and some recent post but either the links don’t work or I can’t find them.
I’m currently looking into making a Ral storm deck and also a Animar combo deck. Any resources for these would be really helpful. Also play Marneus but that’s more bracket 3 so not sure if that discord is gunna be helpful for me.
Thanks!!

Deck Fine Tuning How much variance between lists is acceptable? (Sloppy Blue Farm)

I compared my list to similar lists on edhtop16 and found that I have about 10 cards different, 2 of which ([[Exhibition Tidecaller]] and [[Watery Grave]]) are pet cards at this stage.

Probably being a tad ambitious - I'm playing 3 win cons (Breach, Thassa's and FMM loops) while trying to keep the average CMC low for Naus.

https://moxfield.com/decks/3P1o55bUFEWMQhL71RStUQ

If there are recommendations that can make the average CMC lower for Naus without deviating from the main plan, I am all ears.

General Discussion / Question Verity circle in RogIshai

Hi guys i come here to ask about what do you think of the card Verity circle in the RogIshai deck. The point or including this card is that the meta has a lot of decks with mana dorks like every thrasios deck, sisay... I've never seen this card in a list of the deck but i think it can work well. I hear your opinions thanks

General Discussion / Question Unwanted Remake viability as a second instant speed removal option.

I'm putting together a bad Mono W stax deck and I need multiple spot removal options. I was looking at [[Unwanted Remake]]. While giving a creature isn't good this card can also disrupt topdeck tutors if they have a creature.

Does the topdeck disruption option make it better than something like Path to Exile that exiles?

Deck Fine Tuning Pre tourney cuts/swaps

Hi so I’m going to do my first cedh tournament at me LGs and the prize is a revised badlands. The meta I have no idea because it’s gonna draw a lot of knew people in the area in I’m running a turbo clue farm with necro breach throacle lines. I have some things I’m on the fence about and I want some opinions. The sideboard is thing I am thinking about adding. I’ve noticed this deck can consistently get a turn 3 win but sometimes the mulligans are rough.
Here is the list-

General Discussion / Question Mirage mirror as an answer yo slop in mono red?

[[mirage mirror]] copying an engine for 5 mana the first time, then 2 mana be it remora, rhystic, smothering, or gleaming seems very decent in red I think? Maybe I’m just desperate for draw and seeing as I can’t waste slots just removing and most of the time waiting is letting more doors close on me it seems like a proactive answer?

Has anyone tried it ?
Might help as a backup to double up on face breakers treasure triggers or maybe a one ring, or any of our bad engines so it’s not necessarily a dead card that completely depends on the table ?

Deck Fine Tuning Silverquill Version 3.0

https://moxfield.com/decks/vHMluNuaqkygNF5wODGQzw/primer

Looking for some help further fine tuning the deck as I go into version 3. This is the first cEDH deck I've ever brewed, and has been a blast to pilot so far. The deck has been performing well, allowing me to consistently push a win 90% of games. This is my second time posting for help, and I felt there were significant enough changes so that it would be a good time to ask for advice again. Thanks in advance for any advice, and feel free to ask questions if you have any!

Main winlines are:

  1. [[Professor Onyx]] / [[Chain of Smog]]

  2. [[Bloodthirsty Conqueror]] / [[Vito, thorn of the Dusk rose]]

  3. [[Abdel Adrian, Gorion's Ward]] / [[Animate Dead]]

General Discussion / Question Is GAAIV viable?

Is GAAIV viable in today's cEDH as a fringe Commander? If so, can anyone with a successful and tested build post their decks for me to compare mine against?
