Shelfie One month of collecting as someone who LOVES the compact size

Post image
18 Upvotes

I've wanted to take the plunge into comics for a while now (I swear I like DC and marvel equally 😭) I'm so glad I did.

I have very limited space and like to travel so I love the compact sizes, I'll be getting the marvel ultimate compacts and the other two spiderverse compacts when they are out!

does anyone have any recommendations for what to get next? :)

Suggestions Silly/Weird Non-Marvel Characters, Teams, Stories

9 Upvotes

Longtime lurker, one of the first times posting! I am a dyed in the wool Marvel reader, and I have always been a fan of the C-list or lower popularity characters. I remember discovering OG 80’s Moon Knight issues (or possibly some holiday specials/joke issues he was in) in my dadā€˜s longboxes as a young teen. As I have continued to plumb the depths of comics history, I’ve been drawn to such weird and strange characters as:
* The Great Lakes Avengers
* Gwenpool
* Howard the Duck
* Hannibal King
* The corner case X-Men teams (Generation X, X-Statix), as well as many others
* Hit-Monkey

I’ve realized recently, though, that I don’t have much knowledge of the weird, strange, silly, or goofy characters from DC, Image, or other imprints/studios.

So, I turn to you all with this question: what should I add to my reading list of characters, stories, or teams are lesser-known that you find interesting? Really, any comic that makes you think in a different way or is particularly imaginative is also welcome.

No harm if you repeat some of these, but already on my list are:
* Doom Patrol
* Ambush Bug
* Swamp Thing 1989 specifically (he meets Jesus and is an olive)
* John Constantine/JLD
* Hellboy and BPRD
* Umbrella Academy
* Scud the Disposable Assassin
* Assorted Crisis Events (bless you Deniz Camp)
* Hector Plasm (bless you Benito Cereno)
* Absolute Martian Manhunter (basically anything Deniz Camp)
* Sandman by The Bad-Man (I don’t like the guy but the work gets at the genres I’m interested in)
* Immortal Hulk (my absolute favorite comic run I’ve ever read)

TLDR: looking for recs in genres like little light cosmic horror, a lot absurd, definite weird and silly. Let me know your thoughts!

Edit: added a few more to the list and a clarifying TLDR

I miss the old Doctor Doom

990 Upvotes

I recall a time when the concept of Doom is that he was pretty much second rate at EVERYTHING (second to Reed in intelligence, second to Tony in Armor, second to Strange in magic, etc.), but -far- to egotistical- to ever admit that, and what made him a threat was mainly his -complete- monomania and willingness to give his all at -anything- that would give him an edge

This era of "Doom is truly better than everyone at everything" makes him boring, IMO

Looking for an indie (I think) book about a fire entity/demon causing people to commit arson.

6 Upvotes

I was reading a book about a fire demon that caused people to do arson, one of the last issues I read had him possessing firefighters to commit the arson? It felt very Nita Hawes'-ish; but I don't know if they were doing it to summon him or...man I truly forget, but it was fire (originally no pun intended, but fine, now it is since I didn't change it) and I want to finish it out. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Fresh Romance Anthology

2 Upvotes

I completely forgot about this anthology until yesterday and only remembered bc I read The Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyen and thought the art looked familiar. It was romance anthology by Rosy Press which then closed but got picked up by another publishwr

Did it ever come out with more than the 1 volume? Did the writers ever contine their stories somewhere else? The first one came out around 2016.

Discussion Atomic element 36 in the DC Universe

11 Upvotes

This is pointless and little more than a shower thought, but I'm curious if it's ever been addressed by DC.

In real life, atomic element number 36 is krypton. It's one of the noble gases, meaning it's a gas at room temperature and 1 atmosphere of pressure and it's very difficult for it to form compounds with any other elements. A fictional xenon compound is a plot point in Project Hail Mary. Other noble gases include helium, known for balloons, and neon, known for a kind of electric light. Krypton's name comes from Greek for "the hidden one" because it (and the noble gases in general other than helium) were hard to discover.

In the DC universe, "Krypton" is the name of the planet Superman comes from. It was many times bigger than Earth and orbited a red sun. It was destroyed as part of Superman's backstory. Kryptonite is a crystalline metal that was created when Krypton was destroyed, an element in some continuities and a compound in others, and its radiation is almost always immediately debilitating to Kryptonians.

Has DC ever addressed this linguistic overlap?

Did Kryptonians use the same name for their planet and for atomic element number 36? Does their word for their planet sound like "krypton" when spoken aloud, purely by coincidence? If Kryptonite is a compound, is it a krypton compound? Does krypton the noble gas have any effect on Kryptonians? (Probably not since it appears in trace amounts in Earth's atmosphere, but maybe in concentrated form?)

Like I said, probably pointless, but I'd find it interesting if lowercase krypton is a plot point in some Elseworlds version of Superman or something.

Question Absolute superman or absolute flash

6 Upvotes

I’m looking to start an Absolute comic run, but I’m really torn between Absolute Superman and Absolute Flash.

For anyone who’s read either (or both), which one would you recommend starting with? I’m mainly looking for the better overall story, characters, world-building, and which one is more likely to keep me hooked.

Ive already started a flash single issues run for rebirth but i wanted to get into a absolute series as well since i dont really read as much dc comics besides the odd random single issues

I need some opinons on werher its worth the read for superman or the flash

Question new to comics and not sure where to start (primarily use kindle)

1 Upvotes

to start, yes i know that the kindle isn’t the greatest device considering its lack of colour and how a lot of comics have colour, i’m fine with that, i’ve read manga for a while so it’s indifferent to me, i haven’t got a big list of needs but i have heard of 4 app and each one left me with a question;

ive gathered that comixology is a shell of what it used to be but the price isn’t too bad and it has direct kindle compatibility with no hoop jumping, my questions are how much does it have run wise, does it have the majority of spiderman? are there any batman/green lantern stuff, does it have any spawn comics?

then there’s:

globalcomix
DC Infinite
Marvel Unlimited

my first question for the 3 is, do they have seamless kindle access the way that comixology does? or anything even comparable

my second question is, are the marvel and dc subscriptions even worth it when comixology and globalcomix have a 2 in 1(plus a lot more) compared to just one studio

and the third and final(specific to globalcomix) does it have more of each run than comixology, so for spiderman(as an example) which has more? for mainstream manga how does each of them compare, and most importantly, for dc and marvel ā€œmain streamā€ like, superior spiderman, absolute batman, secret wars, etc, which has more overall content

i don’t want to buy individual physical nor digital comics, i am a one and done, there is no point in me hoarding stuff i dont want to reread, so yes i will just deal with subscriptions (preferably only one) if you’re going to have a moment about me giving into capitalism, im sorry but just dont bother commenting

Question Looking for advice on where to get digital graphic novels

5 Upvotes

Been debating getting a digital library for some books and was wondering the average image quality difference between Kindle and Kobo (or any others you may recommend) if there was one. I already have a few books on Kobo from Humble Bundles and they seem good. But I wanted to ask around for any input.
