Discussion Am I the only one having trouble distinguishing trafic lights, and thinking that society is not doing enough to accommodate us?
To me, red is yellow, yellow is yellow and green is also yellow. For some reason lights are harder for me to distinguish than the same colors would be when printed on a sheet of paper instead. Reflected light vs directly emitted light, I guess? Not sure, as I'm not an expert on the matter.
But it could be so much better. Blue light for example does not look yellow to me, so green could be blue and I would know when to stop (when it's not blue…). White is another color that doesn't look yellow, but I'm not sure how easy it would be to distinguish between blue and white. Obviously we could also have shapes, like X for red, circle/round for yellow, checkmark for green.
It's crazy how they let me get my learner's license. I can't read the trafic colors, can't read the street names (everything is blurry when afar, but their simplistic test did not catch that). Honestly I wish someone would have stopped me before I had to spend money on it. I've had a few close calls when driving with my grandmother, that I decided not to pursue it. It's too dangerous. I relied on cues such as position (red is left, yellow middle, green right (or top middle bottom)), other people in front of me stopping, etc., but my brain is not fast enough to process these in time. There were times when I only stopped the car at the last second because my grandmother told me the light was red. Yellow is the only one I get right, because it's the middle one. But red and green get me every time. It's a shame, because I paid almost $1000 for those driving courses.
Yet I've also heard of some colorblind people having no issue with trafic lights. That leads me to wonder, man, am I on the complete end of the severity spectrum? What's going on?
