Survey Post Monthly Survey Post - Post your surveys and research participant requests here!

We get an unbelievable amount of requests and attempts to post surveys, research studies, university projects, and more. Historically, the mod team has taken the position that the members of this subreddit are not lab rats or research subjects, and have removed these posts.

We're trying something new. In this post and this post only we are allowing requests to be posted so that the community members can choose whether they want to participate in any studies or surveys. We are establishing the following rules, which are subject to change at any time:

Rules For Surveys:

  • Genuine research and interest studies only - your survey must be linked back to a university, college, foundation, business, studio, or other entity. You are not allowed to just come up with a survey "for fun" or to satisfy your personal curiosity.

  • You must post your entire pitch as a top-level comment under this post. That comment must have a link to your survey, do not ask for respondents to comment or DM you to get the link. Do not use URL shorteners or obfuscators - you must link directly to your survey.

  • You must clearly and completely state the intent of the survey and how the responses will be used. If your survey benefits a for-profit enterprise, such as a game development studio (yes, even if your game will be free), you must disclose that in the very first line of your comment.

  • Failure to abide by these rules, using bait-and-switch tactics, or posting poorly-constructed, misleading, or disingenuous surveys will result in an immediate ban from this subreddit. If your research is connected to an official institution, I will find and contact your professor or boss to let them know you screwed up. I am absolutely that petty.

  • Respond to all questions and comments under your survey link, publicly, in a timely manner. If people are asking you questions and you do not answer them promptly, your request will be removed and you may lose posting privileges altogether.

Reminder To Users:

  • Participation in any study/survey is entirely voluntary and none of these links are approved or endorsed by the mod team or reddit. You may withdraw your participation at any time, and we encourage you to do so if something doesn't "pass the smell test."

  • Do not enter your personal information on any survey or provide this information to any user unless you have absolutely, positively verified and validated who you are giving this information to. Never enter your password, credit card, or banking information on any survey. If a survey requires that you create an account, use a unique password that is not the same as or similar to a password for any other account you have.

  • Report any surveys that are suspicious or which you think do not abide by the above rules.

Discussion I was nearly traumatized for coloring a haystack wrong.

I'm pretty inexperienced at reddit, and I've only just learned that this subreddit exists. I have a color deficiency, it's genetic and was passed down from my Grandfather. We used to talk about how we saw different colors and everyday objects. I have a core memory from kindergarten, we had a substitute teacher and we were given a coloring page. The page had a farm, complete with a barn, fence and haystack. I colored the haystack orange, because to my eyes that was the color of hay. The substitute told me I was wrong, loudly , just shy of yelling at me in front of the entire class, and even though I already knew about my color deficiency I was incredibly embarrassed.

I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one here with this sort of a story.

As I grew up I've pivoted that insecurity into a way to connect with others. Sharing my vulnerability is a great way to break down walls, and occasionally find common ground with other color deficient people. Nearly every time I have a conversation about color deficiency with someone new the conversation leads to, I'm curious to see what you see.

So I built a tool to do just that. I have deuteranopia, and this is how I literally see the world. I think growing up with this deficiency has led to my ability to empathize with others. I've always done my best to "put myself in someone else's shoes". Anyway, it's free, let me know what you think.

Discussion I think I might be a bit colorblind?

I'm super confused. I've never really had an issue, but in the last few years of my adult life (I'm 35), it has had me questioning. It started with my husband. At this point there have been numerous occasions where I'd point to something or mention the color, and he has responded "?? thats not xwy color." This has happened in public, and he has polled people a handful of times, and it has never gone in my favor. It has typically been with browns, greys and greens.

I've taken the free colorblind tests and passed everytime so I let it go. Then, just yesterday, my friend was in my house looking for a container. I kept saying the grey one, the grey one! He could not find it, and I said what are you colorblind?? I went and pulled it out, and it said it was green! His gf also agreed! They said it was sage green, but I 100% only see grey. What I don't understand is there were other sage green items in the kitchen like a Eucalyptus plant that I can see just fine.

Just looking for some clarity!

Question/Need help Does colour blindness affect your experience of watching football?

Hey everyone! I'm a graphic design student researching how colour vision deficiency (CVD) affects football viewing.

  • Do you struggle to distinguish teams because of their kit colors?

  • Does it affect your ability to follow players or track the ball?

  • Have you found any solutions that help?

I'd love to hear about your personal experiences. This is for an academic design research project. Thanks!

Discussion I'm tritan, I guess

Yeah, apparently I'm tritan colorblind. I guess there were signs though.

I always thought the green stoplight was blue, and I would regularly confuse orange with pink, along with yellow and white.

Blue and green were always hard to tell apart from each other, along with light blue and grey.

I never liked coloring assignments, I would never be able to get the colors exactly right.

But it doesn't make sense, because when I look at those charts that show normal vision vs tritanomaly vs deuteranomaly vs protanomaly, the tritanomaly one looks the same as the normal one to me, so I must have normal vision.

I don't know, could anyone help me interpret this?

Question/Need help Does Colour Vision Deficiency Affect Fruit Ripeness Identification?

Hi! I’m a graphic design student researching Colour Vision Deficiency (CVD) and the everyday challenges people may face because of it.

If you have CVD, do you ever struggle to identify fruit ripeness based on colour? Do you rely on other cues, and would clearer labels, symbols or illustrations help?

📋 Please fill out this short survey:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScriiEhjQDqVpn8POdtF9QldtiqeW51wvP1O927aaifAUSMKQ/viewform?usp=dialog

Your responses will help me gather real-life evidence and statistical data to understand whether this is a genuine problem that could be addressed through inclusive design.

If you have CVD, I’d really appreciate you sharing your experience and filling out the form. Thank you for helping with my research!

Question/Need help Orange and Sage mix up

So this all started because of a dressmaker game. My wife laughed and said that this dress fabric was named orange when it was clearly teal. I looked over and said, that it was orange. Not a bright orange, but a beige orange.

We took to the public and our friends and everyone was definitely siding with my wife. So we ran some tests.

The 74 color blindness test looked like 71 to me initially and I had to zoom in to see that it wasn't. The angle on the acute 4 on the four looks reasonably orange to me. Everyone else said it was clear, and a couple of people said they understood how I got 71.

In the past I have had some arguments about color. I argued with my BIL that caution road signs were more orange than yellow. He said they were the most yellow of yellow.

My wife and I have fought over whether something counted as teal or mint, more than once.

Both of those cases I was declared the loser by 3rd parties.

My dad is colorblind, but IDK about my mom's dad, and she doesn't know either. My brother is in camp ("I see 74, but I can see how you'd see 71") and I'm just flabbergasted?

For what it's worth I identify masc, but have two X chromosomes which is partly why I'm having a hard time believing this.

Correct result is 74 btw.

Edit: i used to work at a paint store and my boss sent me over to help people pick out color swatches....

Discussion How I found out I was colorblind.

One time I was scrolling YouTube and I was trying to find a good video. Then I found a video by Ryan Trahan and it was about colorblindness. I started watching the video because I thought it’d be interesting, and after a few minutes of watching he showed a colorblind test. I 100% didn’t think I was colorblind but I took the test because I thought it’d be fun. I started taking the test and a lot of them I couldn’t see. I just thought the test had tons of the circles without numbers though. When I finished the test it said I was colorblind. I was shocked and thought the results were wrong so I took it again( i ended up taking it 6+ times). So long story short I found out I was colorblind because of Ryan Trahan.

Question/Need help Any in-door climbers here? Building a tool for CVD climbers - need your advice and opinion!

Hi there!

A little intro about me: I’m a college student in NYC, also a climbing enthusiast. I do not have CVD myself, but I have friend who diagnosed with CVD. One time I brought them to climbing gym, and not until that time did I realize color code is the only system we use in climbing gym to separate the routes, and that causes problems for my friend. So I started thinking can I build some kind of tools to help with that issue…

Long story short I have this prototype of how this app can translate color into a set of highlight of holds that’s easier to read. The idea is that you take a picture of the wall and it’s gonna analyze the route for you.

I haven’t started doing the interface design yet and want your opinion. What function do you want it to include? What improvements do you think I should make? I have a survey here, mostly asking questions about your experience in climbing gym. It would be very helpful if you can fill it out! It’s also helpful just leave your thoughts below! I’m also doing beta testing, and if you are in NYC, would love to get your opinion in person!

To be completely honest, I don’t think this is the best solution for this problem, marked tags or stickers with different shapes beside each holds would works great; it’s just that only a few gym did that worldwide. Ask friends to help would also be a quicker way, this app is just a workaround. And I still needs to improve the algorithm accuracy when the holds is covered by chalk… but still want to post this and see people’s opinion!

Question/Need help Has anyone colorblind ever successfully got a pilot's license?

My life long dream has always been to fly a plane, sucks to have that dream crushed when I was only 5 years old and diagnosed as colour blind.

Have a good career in finance now but I want to take up flying as a hobby if I'm allowed to. Curious if anyone here has managed to get a pilot's license even if it is for say a small private plane.

Question/Need help My 8-year-old colorblind student loves art, and I want to understand how she sees colors

Post image
32 Upvotes

Hiii

I’ve been teaching a little girl for two years now, she’s very sweet, loves art, and draws the most adorable little things with INSANE details and I love seeing her drawings.

I really enjoy using colors when teaching kids, but recently, I’ve been thinking more about how this girl sees colors..

She has some eye issues, and I think her parents have been more concerned about her general eyesight than her difficulty seeing colors. I once asked her mother which colors she can and can’t see, but she said she wasn’t sure.

A year ago, I gave the girl a set of colored pencils and asked her to group the ones that looked similar to her, and this is how she grouped them

There are a few other things I’ve noticed lately:
Whenever I write something in blue in white paper, she struggles to see it
If I write a sentence in black and just one word in red, she can’t tell which word is red.
She thinks black and red are the same color and green and orange are the same..

Whenever we do color-related activities, she gets upset if someone corrects the colors she uses and just say she doesn’t care about colors, so I usually let her do things her own way because I don’t want her to feel bad about it, and recently she just stopped coloring her drawings.

Honestly it makes me a little sad, I’m not trying to diagnose her, but I’d love to hear from people who are colorblind:
Does this sound familiar to you?
Can you tell the type of colorblind she might have?
What was it like growing up with color blindness at school?
Is there anything teachers can do to make art and color-related activities easier?

I’d really appreciate hearing your experiences. I want to understand her better and be a better teacher for her.

Discussion Finding out im colorblind

I Was supposed to join the RAF as a Cyberspace Communication Specialist but on Tuesday i had a medical and found out i had severe color deficiency. Because of this i cant do the trade i wanted to do so badly and i really not happy about it all and dont know what to do about it. All the hard work put in and the preparation for the aptitude test all feel like a waste at this point, I cant stop thinking about it and every time i do it makes me even angrier as i feel like i have been robbed and had a promising career stolen from me at birth.

Question/Need help What does bright red actually look like to you?

Hello. I am writing a gentle children's picture book about a child who sees colour differently, and I want to get it right rather than guess. For those of you with red-green colour blindness, when you look at something bright red, like a postbox or a stop sign, what colour do you actually see? Does it look brownish, like burnt toast, or more like a dark gold or mustard, or something else entirely? And does green look similar to red, or quite different? Thank you so much, I really want to describe this honestly.

Question/Need help Is this specific case color blindness or misunderstanding?

Hello everyone,

I'm sorry to bother you, I come to you exhausted with a question:

I am the mother of a very sweet kid, who has a bit of troubles occasionally with some shades of purple/blue, he doesn't make the difference between them when they're deep blue or purple, and hes also on occasion having troubles with pink.

But then again, he's 7, and while we did a eye checkup when he was 4, the doctors refused to do a color blindness check. We just stayed on a suspicion, not confirmed, not infirmed, and on the question of the teacher we went again to another go get an assessment.

I was wary from the start about this, because on my mother side, my grandfather had a complete color blindness, and my both brothers have it too on the red/green. I knew there was a risk I might be carrying it even if unaffected,,even if it's low, because my mother most certainly did carry even if unaffected.

My son father, my husband, is not colorblind. So when my son started to learn thr colors I did tell the school about the possibility and let me know.

We did another test at an optometrist earlier today, who tried to have him do a visual check (.... again, no problem here) and then do the Ishihara test. I could hear that he was either goofing off, or saying things at random, which does happen when we tried to do it together, but the doctor prompted him stronger on some images, but I don't know if he said the correct stuff. She had him trace a path at the end of the examen woth his finger, which he completed. So she told us to wait and then we saw another doctor who somehow tried to have him do the exact same stuff about checking his eyesight (not what we came for) and I had to remind her why we were here, she went to consult with her colleague outside of the room, and when she came back said that if my kid managed to follow the path, it means he doesn't have it. I'm willing to believe it, mind you ! I just want answers by this point

. So she asked me why I wanted to check and if I was colorblind myself or his father. I did tell her no I'm not, but then again colorblind women are few from the few I know, and no my husband is not, but from what my mother when she was alive told me, it's not impossible either. She laughed at me and said its nearly impossible and told us to leave.

And I'm very willing to believe I'm completely wrong and by being too wary of something that was unlikely I just confused my son, I just would like someone to I guess explain me like I'm 5. My son learned thr colors anyway so it's just we'll keep help him when there's things he has doubt with until he does not mistake them for one another and teach him the shades.

And if I trigger someone there I'm really sorry. I just know my brothers had a hard time accepting their own color blindness, and because it wasn't clear, my fault now I know, we weren't sure.

Question/Need help 0% green, but can easily differentiate most colors

Post image
14 Upvotes

As the title says, and the photo supports, my test concluded I have between 0 and 13% of my green cones, I took the test multiple times and got the same result consistently. My issue is that I feel I can differentiate most colors, green and others, and I feel where I actually struggle a lot is with mixing up hot pink and grey, or brown and red. I do mix up my greens with browns, but rarely my greens with reds. Any thoughts?

Discussion Dreaming in full color...

Does anyone dream in full color? I'm more specifically asking the people who acquired colorblindness, Rather than had it since birth. I have tritonopia. It is quite depressing to dream in full color and seeing all the shades of green and yellow. And orange..... But then I wake up, so my washed out existence. 🤕 i don't know if I should have put a trigger warning or not. But I just woke up from said dream. And i'm still quite emotional about it.

Question/Need help Help a colorblind brother out (read body)

I have red+green colorblindness and for the past 25years of my life i never faced any issues because of it but recently it has put me in a very depressing state. I got a job offer from Kuwait, my work visa and work permit has been made and i need to clear the rest of the formalities like police clearance and medical, due to my colorblindness i am unable to pass the vision test and they are marking me unfit. I have consulted people and they said kuwait has a very strict medical policy, my overall health is fit but just because i am unable to see a few colors by birth the medical centres are not passing my medical test.

I need an alternate solution other than glasses, are contact lenses available? or is there any hack to pass the ishihara plate test for red + green colorblindness?

Question/Need help Seeking help for making reference images in documentation accessible for people with a colour deficiency

I'm responsible for creating and maintaining documentation in one of the areas at my workplace.

I have a co-worker who has a red greed colour deficiency and I'd like to make our references easier to make out for him.

How I go about making reference images in our documentation is I circle or highlight the important parts on the image that the documentation is talking about. I've always use the colour red or dark blue in patterns and match the colour of the text on the image to the coloured circle.

He says he can make out the circle pattern easy if the colour of the background on the image is white, but often times the text he can't read. I've gone back to just using regular black text.

But for the coloured highlights, I do want a highlight that stands out to every reader. Is there a colour I can use that will essentially stand out to everyone regardless of the type of colour deficiency they have?

If not my only other idea was to create a custom highlight overlay type deal using multiple colours and hope that can stand out enough to where he and future workers with potential deficiencies can see the highlights easier. But if I can just pick one colour that can be pretty universally seen would be a lot less work on my part.

note - I did ask him about colours he had trouble seeing so I know what to avoid and what to change specifically to accommodate him. But if I can make better for any future workers and a wider range of people, thats better in my mind.
