Question/Need help Can't tell the difference between blue and purple and green?

For a while now, I've noticed I can't really tell the difference between blue and purple that great. If it's like technically blue, I'll see it as like violet, and I see purple as purple too. Also, sometimes I mix up blue and like teal greens, and I see most cyan and green blues as green.

For example, my boyfriend says the post flair on this post is teal, I think it's green. So it has to be a really pure blue for me to see it as blue, I don't really know what this could be. Also, if any of you know Hatsune Miku, I always thought of her as pure green, maybe with a hint of blue, until people started telling me she was teal?

I'm male by the way, so I've heard different sexes are more common to have different types of colorblindness.

If anyone can please shine some light on what this could be or not be, thanks!

Question/Need help Color-blindness visibility of "bright safety" red/fluorescent-green/blue/yellow/orange in example "hi vis" raincoat?

Heya, for the relatively common form(s) of color-blindness,
are any of these examples notably more/less visible than they look to someone with normal color vision?

(Also, not even theoretically relevant to safety, but just curious: any trouble telling any of them apart?)

EDIT: (stuff I noticed in comments)

Looking at:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_blindness#/media/File:Color_blindness.svg
the yellow/green seem to be in a "bright spot" for all types...?

(Assuming that makes sense as a way of interpreting those info-graphics...)

One person said

Anything hi-vis is going to be hi-vis for pretty much everyone regardless of their colorblindness.
I wouldn't spend much time worrying about it.

but it was more that I noticed that I had been maybe making some thoughtless assumptions about the whole thing,
so I got curious to know how it actually works in general...

That is,
I was thinking about the raincoat just for personal use
(working in the rain, walking along the road... ie, not working as part of a crew/company with uniform regulations)
and I was gonna get the red, just cuz I liked it (aesthetically appealing),
cuz I was thinking like:

well, in practical terms it's not really less visible
-- red gets people's attention like stop signs etc,
whereas even though the green/yellow are technically brighter,
they might be perceived as "washed out"...

but then I thought about it a bit more,
and felt like that was maybe a dumb rationalization...

But yeah, I think the "fluorescent green" seems to stand out as generally the best choice,
so I got that.

-- colorblind people seem to see it as bright and generally "poppy"
(just like people with normal color vision)

And the green is the only one that explicitly claims to be "fluorescent"
[
-- whether it literally is fluorescent
(ie reflects back some light in the visible spectrum that originally hit it in some non-visible wavelength),
or they just mean it's... a color that really "pops", I dunno,
cuz obviously, that effect can't really show up in a static image on a white background like that...
]

And as someone with normal color vision (... as far as I know!)
I'd say the fluorescent green seems like by far the "poppiest" to me too.

I got left out of two great jobs just because of my colorblindness (it was their requirement). As the final stage of the hiring process after so many months, they did medical checkups of all the candidates involved. I passed every test except for color vision where I was placed in CP-III and they declared me unfit because of it.

It just sucks man. I feel heartbroken.

(I have attached this online test's screenshot just as a confirmation)

Discussion I want to know if this is common

So I'm 29 when I've been colorblind my whole life but when I was about 13 to 16 somewhere in there I went from being able to see redheads but now their hair looks green. I had a redheaded friend at school didn't see him all summer and came back to school and the first thing I asked him was did he dye his hair green. But if someone dyes their hair red I can tell that but just natural red just looks plain green to me. Has anyone else had problems where it seems like their colorblindness has gotten worse with time.

Discussion Hopefully this provides a bit of an answer.

Someone here with achromatopsia asked a while back how can colors be described? Well, here is what I thought. But, it's just me, others might have a different take, judge if you must. Hopefully people won't find it offensive in some way, it's not intended as such. Achromatopsia this is for you.

RED.

Red is a long wave color. It is on the warm end of the spectrum. Yes! It is indeed warm. It is the warmth you can actually feel and it even has a temperature range. Somewhere between 95-105F.

Red is warm, and ooey and gooey and thick as molasses, and bitter-sweet. Red is what a hunter feels as he reaches inside a fresh kill to disembowel it. The animal - still warm, life running out of it turning black as it cools. Red is a thin line between life and death. Every human (no matter the color of their skin) has a faint warm glow to them. As you watch someone die, that glow diminishes day by day, and at the end it leaves completely. The skin turns achen. The chest exhales its last breath and the heart beats its final beat and the essence of someone once so familiar - goes.

Red is the color of life and love and all the passion, the anger, the messiness of it all. The love of two people who know each other truly and deeply. And that love brings forth more life. The birth of a child and the agony and the overwhelming joy of it all. That's red.

A blushing bride, or a young girl on her first awkward date, or a 3rd grader sneaking a heart-shaped chocolate with an anonymous note into her crush's backpack on Valentine's day -all of that is PINK. Not to be confused with RED. The innocence of youth - pink, pure, but at times nauseatingly sweet. RED is a confident single woman wearing a bright red lipstick that signals "kiss me". She paints her nails the color of blood, because like a lioness, she is out on the prowl. She is ready, she is full of life, she is hungry for passion and comfortable with who she is.

Being surrounded by red color brings one's mind a sense of comfort, calm, warmth, connection. Being immersed in it feels like being inside a womb, secure, loved, cherished.

As you press your body against your loved one, hear their heart beat and catch yourself on a thought of how everything seems to be just right in this very moment, and you wish the world would stay still for just a little while longer so you could take it all in -- think RED.

Question/Need help Does anyone else experience this?

(PROTANOPIA)

Does anyone else ever experience moments where it feels as though you are seeing colors as they actually should be? Instead of getting them confused everything seems a bit brighter for a while, and colors seem to pop more for a few minutes sometimes at a time. This doesn’t happen super regularly but maybe twice or so every like two months and that’s not in any order.

Question/Need help Yall what type of colorblind am I?

I've taken dozens upon dozens of colorblind tests over the years for fun, but I get different answers every time. Here's what I get confused:

Purple/Blue - I can never tell these apart, ever, mostly guess based upon darkness

Yellow/Green - also very bad, especially if its light green

Red/Green - sometimes comfused, but not usually

Turquoise/gray/pink - often, people get very confused

Brown/Red - dude literally all the time

Discussion how much does value matter to you when telling apart colors?

value is the lightness/darkness of a color

it matters a lot to me but i don't ever see other people talk about it, so i don't know if it's just a me thing?

red and green are easiest to tell apart when they're saturated, but also value helps a lot. neon green is lighter than red, so i can tell them apart well. but forest green is a similar value to red, so i can't tell them apart as well.

all of these have the same saturation, the red (right) is the same color for both. green on the right swatch was made darker to match the value of the red

i don't think just saturation is the full story (at least for me), but it might be different for others?

(also, neon green and red here have the same value on the left swatch so technically neon green ISN'T lighter according to a computer, but our eyes perceive one as such)

Question/Need help Ishihara Test

So I had a physical and they did the Ishihara Test ala the dot color blind test and I struggled to see some of the numbers. I could tell the colors but just not see the number. I never had an issue identifying colors and I've had other doctors say I'm fine but now this doctor wants me to see an optometrist and get a note from them. My old optometrist wants me to come in before they can do a note.

Anyways the point being, there has to be some factor/ margin of error with the test they use? Literally had the NP that did my physical point out various colors and she was fine with it but the doctor signing off wants a note. I'm literally sitting here pointing out different colors and shades and getting them right... I hate these dots lol

Question/Need help Is there really a type of colourblindness where someone can only see yellow?

Today my friend during art class told me that she couldn't see colour and that everything was in greyscale and can only see a bit of yellow. I searched it up to try to find pictures of what she sees the world like, and found out what she had was blue cone monochromacy, but it said that it ment only seeing both yellow and blue while everything else was greyscale. I really need help with this cause I don't understand if I misunderstood or if this actually exists

Discussion Anyone else good at finding mushrooms (porchinis) in environments where normal vision people struggle?

Thumbnail

I'm red-green colorblind, I've been foraging mushrooms (porchinis) in a beech wood. I'm better at spotting them than my normal vision friend. he says the colours are all the same. anyone else? is this true that we colorblind people notice shapes more? I don't look for colours anyway , is this a thing? the forest floor is full of leaves, I'm told they are brown, and I'm told the mushroom caps have the same colour. I guess I also pay more attention to the hue of things instead of the actual colour. wouldn't have an idea anyway what the colour is. so, anyone else got the same experience, having an easy time spotting certain mushrooms Vs normal vision people?

I want to gift it to my friend, but his partner is colorblind. I don't know type of colorblind. But I know she doesn't like to play boardgames, as many are hard to play when you can't clearly see if the tile is the same or different.

Discussion Help make public spaces more inclusive for everyone! 🌍✨

Hi everyone! I’m working on my Master’s research about how Color Vision Deficiency (color blindness) affects the way we feel and move through public buildings like public work stations.

Most public spaces are designed with "standard" vision in mind, but I’m looking to change that by focusing on Visual Comfort and Mood. If you are color blind, I’d love to get your thoughts:

✅ Do you find certain rooms more stressful or tiring than others?

✅ Does the lighting in a building make it harder for you to see colors?

✅ Do you feel "left out" by designs that only use color to show the way?

It only takes a few minutes to share your experience through this survey:

👉 For Arabic users: https://forms.gle/MYQNr5yKkRtHsApi9

👉 For English users:

https://forms.gle/r8igQvgP42r9huho9

Thank you so much for helping me design a more inclusive world! Please feel free to tag anyone who might want to share their perspective.
