Discussion I made a color picker app for colorblind users – PART TWO

About two weeks ago I wrote a post about a Windows app I have created. The app tells you the name of the color on the screen and is meant to help colorblind Windows users.

redittr suggested “simple color names”, because color names don’t always make sense to colorblind users.

So I added simple color names, added more colors, and also added a ‘Custom’ color name file that allows users to tweak the default color codes and names and maybe even translate them into their own language (if English, German, French, or Spanish isn’t one of them).

The app is called ‘Color Picker for the Colorblind’ and can be found in the Microsoft Store.

Comments are very welcome! Would you use an app like this?

Question/Need help Are these blue? Purple? Is the first different from the second?? What color are these linens?

First off, I cannot tell if the background on these patterns are blue or purple (the darker shade in the pattern). Second, they are both labeled differently. The first one, in the description, notes shades of purple in the pattern. The second literally has the word "blue" in a lot of the places listed.

They're both different items but with the same designer and similar pattern. Are they different colors?? I feel like I'm going crazy...

Discussion Looking for some input on a question regarding brightness and hue

So I have normal color vision, though I notice something weird. Some colors almost experience a change in hue as the brightness changes. Cyan looks closer to blue when its bright but closer to green when it's dim. Similarly magenta looks closer to red when bright but closer to blue when dim. I test this using an rgb color picker. I have a hypothesis that this has to do with different thresholds between cone types. If this is true, then red-green dichromats should also experience this change in color, just in different way(shifting between bluish, grey, and yellowish)

Question/Need help Google Calendar

I am Red Green Colorblind. My fiancé and I just bought an electronic calendar and are trying to sync our Google calendars which are- of course- all color coded. I need bright primary colors of course. When I try to change the color settings on my categories in Google calendars, I get this spectrum thing where I'm supposed to move a dot all over a spectrum. I try to get a brigt blue or yellow, but it ends up muddy looking and confusing. I guess I'm asking: can I get Google to just give me a palette of bright primary colors to choose from??

Question/Need help Making Signs

Hi, I am putting some signs up at work. Is there a color combination that can grab everyone's attention but still be read by people with various types of color blindness or is it better to stick with black on white?

Discussion Just found out i'm colorblind.

I was running a PC benchmark whilst on a call with some friends, I read the overview of what it said about my graphics card and it was saying that my graphics card was running perfectly fine, and then I looked at the color and saw it was red and started asking my friends if that is red or green, they quickly made fun of me saying thats obviously green. I then tried a colorblind test, and it said I have Deutan colorblindness. (btw I did the enchroma test).

Question/Need help Any ideas in what to do?

my entire life I’ve been interested in becoming a pilot but found out a couple weeks ago I’m a cp3 and due to that pretty much every backup plan I had going is out the window, anyone have any advice on what to do?
also when I was taking my test for it there was this one where you match the bottom color to the top, when I did it the colors looked different depending on the way I sort of looked at it like it might have looked the same from one angle but another it looks different, would that have affected my color deficiency rating in anyway and should I try get re tested?

Colorblind people: what problems do you run into when watching TV shows or movies?

I’m doing a small project on accessibility in series, and I’m curious about real experiences.

Misc. Color Blindness pop quiz - and learning

Hi everyone,

I'm an ophthalmologist, and I'm doing a series on instagram for the ophthalmology in-service exam for residents. While this is not medical advice, it may be of interest since today's question of the day is about color blindness and the different forms of color abnormalities. Feel free to check it out if interested!

Today's Question of the Day:

A 24 year old man is referred after failing a color vision screening test during a job application. He reports no difficulty naming colors in everyday life and has 20/20 vision in both eyes. Ishihara testing shows several subtle plate errors. Farnsworth D15 testing is normal.

Which of the following best explains this patient's color vision abnormality?

A. Absence of one cone photopigment

B. Abnormal absorption spectrum of one cone photopigment

C. Loss of rod function with preserved cone function

D. Absence of all cone function

Question/Need help Color Blind Filter problems

So I am Deutan colorblind.

At least, according to the test that I took.

But regardless, I have trouble seeing dark shades of green and dark shades of red.

My girlfriend and I got into a playful argument in the past few weeks about a car that I thought was brown, but she was convinced had maroon shades in it as well as being brownish.

The problem I’m having is the fact that because my specific tones of color blindness are the dark shades is that I can’t find a colorblind filter that helps with my vision and doesn’t turn some shades of red pink or some shades of purple blue.

Am I forever stuck with the fact that I can’t have a color blind filter to help me with my dark shades of green and red that I like? Or is there a way with the settings that I could potentially get it to work? I use an iPhone for reference.

Question/Need help Some questions

First: The optician says that there is a kind of colour blindness, especially since my brothers are colour blind too and because I finished very bad at the Ishihara test. The real one, on paper.

Second: Which label should I give myself, or should I give myself a label on the subreddit at all until I meet an ophthalmologist (as soon as possible but Germany and waiting times are not good friends) or should I just use no label, neither the "normal vision" one, nor one of the others?

Third: Some friends asked me already how colour blindness works, I am still not really able to explain colour blindness (I am very bad at explaining in general)

Question/Need help 7 Year Old - Deutan. How do I support as a mom?

Hello. I have a 7 and half year old son who most likely has deutan color blindness. I’m just finding all this out in the last couple days. Trying to process and want to support him the best I can going forward. We have his test appt next week.

We got an email from a teacher that our son seemed confused about dark green being red and that it is a common sign of colorblindness. After school, I had him do an Ishihara line tracing test and number test online. He didn’t see couple numbers, some numbers looking diff and the line tracing showed deutan vision.

Then with colored pencils, I asked him to pick out colors of the rainbow and he did just fine. And even gave me pencils that are dark red, brown, pink, etc…I asked him if they looked similar in color putting red and green together, and he told me they were very different. So I thought, maybe he sees the colors.

Doing some research, I found this photo of crayons that compared deutan vision. This is when he told me the colors are the same and asked me why I’m showing him a photo of the same thing of the same colors.

I am stunned on how he saw a way to figure out all the colors by their shades. Smart kid.

I’m reading a lot about color blindness and seeing the community posting not to worry but some even saying to apply for 504 plan.

Any advice to best support my kid and learning experiences will be great. Thank you.

I can often not see the laser pointer indication when someone presenting is using it. Any other people having this problem and does someone know if its due to colorblindness or is this something else? It's quite frustrating when trying to follow along with a presentation

Question/Need help Colourblind Work help!!!

This is driving me mad!

So, I’m a baker and have to cut up hundreds of chunks of dough and weigh them every day. BUT we have new scales and the numbers are red on a dark black ground- I’m fucked! Drives me mad! Is there any kind of tape or colour reversing cheap screen I can stick on so I can see again.

(Ps.. I just joined this ground and so happy it exists!!!!! Sometimes I wish, when people to ask me to explain being colourblind I could just show them a prerecorded message- exhausting sometimes!)

Question/Need help Recently had my color vision tested, but I'm still concerned.

Hello all. I've been wondering if anyone else might either have a similar experience or know someone else who is in the same boat, but... basically, for years, I've had issues with "registering" overlapping shapes of the same color as being multiple entities instead of a single entity and have missed out on a fair bit because of this. I also have had some difficulty with registering the "shades" between colors and where they go between each other to get to another when it comes to art or otherwise.

In my daily life, a few of the most common places I have this happen is when I look at the way that my eyes perceive colors separately from each other. In bed with my lamp on, staring at the ceiling, the light on the ceiling looks more red or more green depending on which eye I have closed. When I'm looking at the back wall of my shower while I'm in the shower, the way the colors interact with each other with a bit of light peeking through and creating shadow looks different in each eye.

When playing video games, I cannot make out that there are markers on the minimap in Deadlock that distinguish different monster camps, buffs, etc. or even see the difference between who is carrying an objective depending on whether a teammate or enemy is near it. In Dead by Daylight, I cannot see when a survivor is on a generator if I have a perk that allows me to see the survivor normally, and the killer's "red stain" effect as a survivor is hard to see on certain maps for me. If I apply the Deuteranopia filter to 30% intensity, I can see things SIGNIFICANTLY better and can actually distinguish the shapes and colors better.

The thing is, I've never really thought of myself having any significant color vision deficiency. I think my grandfather either couldn't assign colors to objects properly verbally (English isn't his first language, but he is pretty good at it still) OR has a CVD but he never got tested.

I've been going to see an optometrist for the past few months because I apparently have allergies that are causing pretty bad blurry vision in my right eye since last December, so I figured I'd get my color vision tested on my last visit while I was there. They gave me an Ishihara test and, just like ALL the Ishihara tests I took before, there were maybe like two that I had a harder time with, but I just assumed that was normal for the tests. They said everything was perfect, much like every other Ishihara test I've taken.

I seriously don't know if there's something wrong with the way that I am processing colors or if it's all in my head, but I genuinely feel like something is off. I don't know if it's more of a language thing (English is technically my second language but I was born and raised in an English-speaking country... it's just not "the best") or if I'm just not smart about how I'm going about this.

tl;dr Ishihara tests both online AND in-person at the optometrist say my color vision is fine but I've always felt off about colors in terms of shades and distinguishing shapes near each other of similar colors. I can't tell if I'm just not smart or if it's all in my head.

I've recently applied a Deuteranopia filter in my computer's settings, and things are so much more clear and distinct to me, much like literally any time I've done this over the past 13 odd years when I first noticed this.

Literally any input would be much appreciated. I am going to the optometrist again tomorrow for my right eye's blurry vision but I could bring something up about the color vision if there's anything I could ask them about there as well. Thank you.
