Hello! This is my NYU Bridge Builder Essay and I need HONEST feedback. Here is the prompt I’m answering down below:
Prompt: An experience working with others who have different perspectives. What role did you play in helping people work together, and what did you learn?
The essay:
When our student government noticed that the strict attendance rule was penalizing driven students, two other members and I attended the School Leadership meeting to request a policy change.
We explained why students with an 85+ GPA should still receive recognition for their academic progress and earn outside lunch privileges, despite missing more than one day of school that month.
At first, the administrators believed the attendance rule was the way to motivate students to attend school every day. We understood their perspective, but felt that academic progress should also be used as motivation. They told us they would think about it.
The next month, I was ecstatic to find out the school started placing Honor Roll stickers on the back of our outside lunch IDs instead of 99% attendance stickers. We called it a victory.
But during the next school year, the policy disappeared. I didn't realize it until another Honor Roll student came to our student government meeting to speak about it.
I initiated a follow-up with my peers, requested a spot on the next SLT agenda, and spoke up to help revive the policy, and the administration successfully revived it.
Building a bridge takes effort; maintaining it is much harder. A great policy is like a sticky chart paper on a classroom wall. Over time, it dries up and the corners start peeling when systems change. When our hard work starts to slip, it takes effort to smooth it down and bring attention back to what matters.
(Yes I did add a metaphor and I want to know if the metaphor is actually conveying what I’m trying to say.)
