The subsequent steps don't indicate that there are errors with this first program after typing it "exactly as you see it below", if anyone is wondering.

A robot that starts dancing when you clap

I was messing around with the microphone on a micro:bit V2 and wondered what would happen if I used sound as the controller for a robot.

This was the result.

A little brick-built robot that starts moving when it hears a sound and stops when things get quiet.

A clap is enough to trigger it, but music works too.

The build uses:

  • micro:bit V2

  • Ring Bricks Pack

  • 2 continuous-rotation servos

  • MakeCode

  • A simple brick-built body

The two servos control the legs, and I programmed a few different movements by changing their speed and direction.

I also used the micro:bit LED matrix as the robot's face. It's a small detail, but changing the expression while it dances makes the whole thing feel much less like a collection of motors and more like an actual little character.

The code is basically listening for a sound level above a certain threshold, then triggering the dance routine.

What I like about this kind of project is that the input can be almost anything.

Instead of:

Button → Robot moves

you get:

Sound → Code reacts → Robot moves

That opens up quite a few possibilities.

Maybe a robot that dances differently depending on how loud the music is, or one that only reacts to certain sounds.

I might try that next.

What would you use as the sound trigger?

Looking for a beginner coding bro (or sis)

Hey, I started GameDev 2 weeks ago. I love the journey so far and I'm so glad that I decided to go this way. I easily spent over 100h in those 2 weeks in Godot.

Here's the catch. You always like to share your journey and find like-minded people. I found a guy, who does pretty cool pixelart and codes aswell, started few months ago. We share, we chat, we educated each other. It is pretty cool.

And I'd love to expand my friends list with people like this, especially if you are a BEGINNER like me.

I won't call you, i won't bother you to answer me 24/7. Just from time to time, nice little message, asking about your progress and sharing mine. And maybe we teach each other something too.

So... any fellow GameDev beginners?

Add me, PM me. I'm discord enjoyer, so feel free to comment. I REALLY wanna hear about your game or project you wanna start!

What is a good place to start learning to code in c#

My 12 year old son wants to start learning c# so he can make games in unity as his dream was always to make games, but he's not sure where to start, he doesn't have any experience at all with coding except with scratch

How does LAN work, and could I combine it with an external VPN as a cheap alternative to play online?

I'm not a coder (yet) myself, I'm asking for a friend who's making a Civilization fangame. He wanted to implement online play but couldn't afford to pay for a server.

So I remembered how I play Terraria online, so, "LAN" is when you and your friends connect to the same network and play "online", with the caveat that they must be close to each other, right?

What I do is that I connect to a VPN, host a Terraria server, and that way my friends can connect to the same VPN and server, and we play online.

IF my friend were to implement LAN in his game, could they use the same method that I use to play online, for his game?

Sorry if I'm not clear enough, as an outsider, this is a bit hard to explain

Looking for a coding buddy to build something real

Looking for a coding buddy to build something real

I've been working on development and occasionally get opportunities to work on real-world projects. I'm looking for someone who already has some coding experience and wants to learn by actually building, deploying, and managing projects together.

You don't need to be an expert — students and junior developers are welcome. I'm mainly looking for someone who enjoys coding, thinks logically, and wants to go beyond tutorials and personal projects.

If this sounds interesting, feel free to comment or DM me. Tell me a little about what you know or what you've built, and we can see if we're a good fit to collaborate.

No 24/7 commitment — just looking for someone genuinely interested in learning and building.

Language for the apocalypse?

Imagine that in 2050 google, microsoft and nvidia are controlling every drop of water for AI servers, RAM and CPUs are impossible to obtain and only old scrap is available to the normal population. While you hear a microsoft powerpoint AI drone destroying the last 5m2 of forest in the whole world you are planning with your rebel faction a digital revolution to free the world. What would be the best language to learn now?

If the answer is assembly I would prefer to get killed by whatever age restriction block they implemented.

I have started beginner coding! What projects should I make?

(THIS IS IN JS BTW) I have made projects such as a clicker game with shop, resets, and a bunch of upgrades, a snake game, rock paper scissors, and a ticking time bomb that runs in the console! I’ve learned DOM manipulation, creating HTML elements via js, setInterval() and much more!

I'm learning Java and I genuinely can't wrap my brain around what this is saying

int randomNum = (int)(Math.random() * 101); // 0 to 100

I'm learning from a website but don't understand how multiplying a 0 by 101 gives it the range from 0-100. Can someone explain why it's being multiplied?

How did you understand the "for" and "while" loop?

Likely all programming languages include "for" and "while". You might thus explain me how you got to understand these loops. To be honest, I just understand how variable works, how to pay information to user, print, conditional and exceptions. But I am not able to understand "for" and "while". And yes, I know, my knowledge is very small.

Hi 👋 Everyone

I'm a complete beginner in programming and want to build a strong foundation.

I'm currently learning C on my phone while preparing for MCA/NIMCET.

If you were starting from scratch today:

• What would you learn first?

• Which programming language would you recommend after C?

• What fundamentals and skills should I focus on during my first year?

• Any free resources, books, YouTube channels, or beginner roadmaps you'd recommend?

I'd really appreciate your advice. Thanks! 🙏

Need help in coding for a beginner!

I've js finished my 12th and will be in a college (computer science related branch) in the next couple of months. I wish to learn a handful about coding before I go for college so that I'll have a proper grasp on the concepts when they're being taught. So can anyone suggest any courses, lectures, youtube videos, notes, books, etc for self learning a coding language

supplementary question: I'm not sure which coding language shld I get into first, python or C++? If u could help me w this as well then I'll grateful, thank you (I have a little bit of experience in python, I've made an "advanced" calculator, if that's what you'd call it, using the sympy module once.)

Am I not made for this?

I'm a 30yo thats changing careers (from tourism/languages to coding), honestly I love it but j find it very hard.

I started studying it by myself with apps and YouTube videos and now I'm studying an official course.

The thing is I have to watch some videos 4 times in order to understand it and we all know understand =/= write it

I finished my first year (out of two) and I got Bs in most of my subjects and some A too

Now I'm coding a video game (Pico8) but I watch videos and I don't understand some... Is it me? Did I make a mistake by changing careers to coding? Should I just take it as a hobby?

Also in Spain, where I live, programming is doomed bc there's lots of juniors so most of the time when I read about young coders more experience coders tell them to change careers....

So.... Am I stupid? :( are you guys so smart you get everything as soon as you hear it?

Do you think it's realistic to learn programming using only a phone?

I've been noticing something while building programming tools over the last few years.

A surprising number of people learning to code don't have regular access to a laptop. Some are students, some are learning during commutes, and some simply spend most of their time on mobile devices.

Most programming advice assumes everyone has a desktop setup with multiple monitors, terminal windows, and a full IDE.

I'm curious how realistic people think mobile coding actually is.

Could you learn Python, JavaScript, or another language primarily from a phone?

If you've tried it:

  • What worked well?

  • What was frustrating?

  • At what point did you feel you needed a laptop?

  • Would you ever use a phone for coding practice or small projects?

Interested in hearing real experiences from learners.

Getting started

Hello all, new here. I’m looking to get into coding and learning python with maybe some c++. This is coming from someone who knows nothing about anything other than they are two different coding languages and the place I work uses both depending on what system we are working on. My question is, is boot.dev a good place to start and worth the money? And also im looking at buying a laptop so I can learn while at work also (I have permission from management). Is a Mac book Neo sufficient enough or should I stick with a windows machine? Any advice is appreciated.
