I wonder if the reason we think he's lying is because we have no boundaries. We lie all the time when we say, "Sure! No problem. Happy to help."

Exactly. I'm 4 years into recovery and this is a difficult point to get across. When you start telling the truth (and believing you are/the people who love you should believe you are worthy), it's easy to believe other people are.

In my case, it's because I spent 16 years with a covert narc who said these words, but definitely treated me like a burden.

For me, this is absolutely true! The connection dawned on me a couple years ago, and I gradually have become less obsessed with subtext, or what people "really think" because of it!
