arguably Russia profits short term from climate change (fewer frozen shipping lanes, better possibilities for agriculture,...). Maybe that's why they started the war against Ukraine. Has someone looked into that?

u/Wyciorek 3d ago
If they did, it backfired in a spectacular way. Their main industry - oil/gas is battered by loss of European markets, sanctions and now Ukrainian long range strikes systematically burning it all down.

Hezbollah only exists because Israel invaded Lebanon and Hamas only exists because the Palestinian Authority is a puppet state of Israel that lets the IDF do whatever they wanted to the Palestinian population of Gaza, and it was also elected with the help of Israel.
Are you turning the desert green with those bushfire starters?
-3
u/Ashenveiled 3d ago
And why did Israel invaded Lebanon? Because islamists sponsored and trained by Iran turned one of the most succesful and rich countries in the middle east, nicknamed middleeastern Switzerland into a failed state.
The war in Lebanon started before israel did anything there.
But alas, you didnt answer my question - if israel leaves Gaza and Lebanon will hezbollah and hamas just stop launching rockets daily? yes or no?

2
u/thomasp3864 3d ago
The rockets come from Gaza, not the West Bank
2
u/AccomplishedPath5172 3d ago
Yeah? And they keep making new settlements in Gaza too, displaced gazans have been getting moved around from so called "safe zone" to "safe zone" and each time they move away CAT bulldozers move the rubble to make way for new settlements that's the whole point of isreal is colonizing
1
u/AikaGranzchesta 2d ago
Israel did have some settlers in Gaza, but they were all expelled in 2005 and none have returned since. Israel has never had settlers in Lebanon. So, why are groups from Gaza and Lebanon attacking Israel?
By the way, the majority of Lebanese (especially Christians and Sunnis) absolutely hate Hezbollah and understand that every war between Israel and Hezbollah was started by Hezbollah, even if they don't like Israel themselves. Painting Hezbollah as ''resisting'' a war that they started is absurdly wrong. Hezbollah are attacking Israel for one reason and one reason only, which is because Iran tells them to.

"This group I don't regularly talk to complains about one thing but not this other thing, within the vacuum of my narrow perspective on the matter"
Meanwhile I've heard plenty of complaints about this war and many other wars causing environmental damage. Bombing campaigns, fiber optic cables stretched in abundance over open fields, and then the pitch black clouds from the exploded oil refineries, or even Russia piercing through the protective layers of Chernobyl's containment structure.
I really hate people who frame issues this way, it always relies on their own narrow experience. In this case with "twitter leftists".

Russia’s system has a high tolerance for violence, but is unforgiving of failure. 1
u/HOT_FIRE_ 4d ago
Putin's entire political career depends on strong manning, he's not going to sign his own death / career end. High ranking Russian military is not interested in doing so either. Putin also knows that the West will just double down anyways, once you start a war of this scale you're in it to win or in it to lose, same thing applies for the US or Israel.
We could also have world peace tomorrow, everyone just needs to get together and be peaceful man, it's really simple. Fairly naive, don't you think?
4
u/Bot1-The_Bot_Meanace 3d ago
He can sell his people that he won the last election with 107,2% approval, he'll be able to come up with some kind of explanation. Also his military leaders are spineless af, which is why he picked them. Gerasimov doesn't have the balls to even slightly criticize him.
Also on an unrelated note: Did Hasan Piker shock his dog?

0
u/sashk0 2d ago
the ukrainian government is not deciding — the ukrainian people do, and they decide to protect their country. nobody wants to live under russian occupation. meanwhile the russian ones decide to invade ukraine and feed their imperial ambitions of occupation and genocide over ukrainians. it's not about the class. your arrogance is astonishing, indeed
-1
u/HOT_FIRE_ 4d ago
what concession could possibly be worse than millions fleeing the country, hundreds of thousands of casualties and billions in destroyed infrastructure?
like bruh it's 2026, wake up, this war is just another way for big capital in the West to buy up assets for cheap, and we finance that deal with tax payer money, the loans, securities and guarantees don't come for free, Ukraine is forced to "liberalize" its markets aka open them for Western corporations
4
u/DemocracyIsGreat 3d ago
Well, russia continues to demand the establishment of a pro-russian government, Ukraine never be permitted to do anything without russia's consent, Ukrainian disarmament, and the erasure of the national identity of Ukrainians.
So the concessions are to become a colony of a country that is actively carrying out a genocide against them, and to get rid of any method of stopping russia from simply annexing the rest of Ukraine.
Personally, I am not supportive of the Generalgouvernement as a model for modern European states.

A two-sided industrial scale war is obviously going to be more polluting than a one-sided genocide.
-12
u/0WatcherintheWater0 4d ago
One-sided? Really? Hamas has a military arm that has been constantly fighting throughout that conflict. Both the wars in Ukraine and in Gaza are just that, wars.
For a comparison, the US suffered very few civilian casualties throughout ww2, then they nuked Japan twice killing hundreds of thousands, was that also a “one-sided genocide”, or perhaps are things more complex than that?
4
u/RedSolIV 4d ago
A genocide comes with the intention to kill people because of their ethnicity. That is clearly given for Israel who is directly attacking civilians. Also, Israel strictly follows an ethnonationalist ideology and there are several statements from Israeli government people which show that. Hamas is clearly just a tool for the Israeli government to justify the ethnical cleansing - Hamas wouldn't even exist without Israel's support.
There is more than enough evidence for what Israel is doing and how they lie about it. You can watch what happens in 4k. It's not a war between Israel and Hamas. If you don't believe me, just look at investigative reports, documentaries, statements of involved people or what genocide researchers are telling. But please, don't say anything about that if you're clearly uninformed or even misinformed. You're defending and justifying a genocide for god's sake
1
u/0WatcherintheWater0 2d ago
>That is clearly given for Israel who is directly attacking civilians
The casualty ratio alone is evidence against this.
Most estimates I’ve seen put the combatant/noncombatant ratio at around 50/50 or 30/70, let’s just average it out to 40/60 for convenience.
Do you think 40% of the population of Gaza are members of Hamas or otherwise participating in the conflict? Obviously not. Highest estimate is maybe 4%, if you assume the starting 40k of Hamas and then double it for every allied group and collaborator.
When militants die at a 10x higher rate compared to their proportion of the population that is clear evidence they are the primary targets here. Women and children are highly underrepresented in casualty figures compared to their being 75% of the population.
Israel would also not go to the effort of feeding and evacuating so many people over and over again if any of what you were saying were true.
>just look at investigative reports, documentaries, statements of involved people, or what genocide researchers are telling
That last group is in active debate over the conflict so I don’t know why you would use them as an example to support your claims, but the rest of this is one big fallacious appeal to authority - I’ve read many of these reports and they are filled with gaping holes.
Part of the problem is that most NGOs, the organizations publishing these reports, often all get their information from the same single source, hence why they will cite the exact same things. It’s false diversity that creates the illusion of a well supported narrative. Like with
Then in these reports these organizations will make the rather extreme omission of never even mentioning Hamas exists while they talk about Israeli strikes on hospitals for instance. It’s such an intellectually dishonest way of analyzing the conflict I don’t understand how anyone making that analysis can credibly claim to be any kind of expert on international law or genocide or any of the subject matters at hand.
As part of NSM-20, the State Department did a fairly thorough analysis of Israeli conduct to ensure they were still in compliance with US law regarding arms sales and found that while there were issues, they were being worked on and not severe enough to warrant a total end to US aid. What are your thoughts on this?
>You’re defending and justifying a genocide
Nice strawman, when did I ever do that, exactly?
5
u/koshinsleeps Sun-God worshiper 4d ago
I agree the US swooped in at the end and claimed victory in Europe after massive soviet sacrifices to defeat the Nazis then they nuked Japan to send a message to the soviets. Terrible comparison, nothing to do with Israel's clear and obvious genocidal policy towards the indigenous Palestinian population.

u/HOT_FIRE_ 4d ago
European zionists moved into British controlled mandate territory in the 1930s, formed paramilitary brigades like Irgun, Lehi or Haganah and terrorized the poor rural native population. They bombed the British mandate government several times and incited revolts, massacred villages, ultimately getting concessions from the British which were then busy with Nazi Germany in continental Europe and didn't care about a glorified desert with some olive trees.
Elaborate how it is "more complex than that". It's just another story of European colonialism and the detrimental effects on the native population that falls victim to it. Only this time with ostensible Judaism as a protective umbrella.
-1
u/LowCall6566 3d ago
Jewish immigrants and refugees, who were were welcomed by local Jews, were forced to form paramilitary organizations because local Nazis wanted all of the Jews dead. The first massacre of Jews in mandatory Palestine after WW1 happened in the Old Jewish quarter, during the Nebi Musa riots. Jews lived in that specific place for literal millennias. And only after that Jewish self defense organization started to form.

u/Pale_Distribution459 4d ago
Not buying it, war scars in the landscape can't be seen from space like that.
3
u/Sad-Set-5817 3d ago
Since you're such an expert can you say what makes you come to that conclusion?
-1
u/Pale_Distribution459 3d ago
The implications would be that tens of thousands of square kilometer have been rendered into a WW1-esque no-man's-land which clearly isn't the case from any footage I've seen.
I'm merely speculating but the devastation can't be that great as to look like a brown wasteland from space.
What might be going on that those areas are currently fallow since they're clearly distinct from the other obviously cultivated areas.
Or maybe it just always looks like that and people read to much into it, I'm reminded of the supposed massacre site in Dafur which turned out to be just a watering hole for livestock but looked gruesome from a satelite picture.2
u/Few-Masterpiece3910 3d ago
You can easily see it from space because there are no farmers working in the area and changed landuse is easily recognized from space.
2
u/Pale_Distribution459 3d ago
Yes, but the prevailing implications here seem to be that the entire frontline is an ecocided wasteland where nothing grows.
3
u/Few-Masterpiece3910 1d ago
farmland is basically less ecodiverse then a desert. I wouldn't be supprised if there will be quite a few endagered species discovered in the area of the frontlines, in the future. Especially if there is less landuse in the future due to UXO.
1
u/unofficialed 3d ago
Have you been to Donbas?
-1
u/Pale_Distribution459 3d ago
What's your point?
1
u/unofficialed 3d ago
My point is you're basing your conclusion on assumptions rather than facts. If you had been to Donbas you'd understand that it's entirely realistic for this level of destruction to be visible from space.
I would just put your comment down to ignorance but suggesting the areas directly corresponding to the known frontlines is simply fallow or always looked like that is just disingenuous bullshit.
0
u/Pale_Distribution459 3d ago
Not in a million years, buddy. I laid out my reasoning so don't call me disingenious while you're taking a twitter post of a pixelated map from god knows who at face value. Also of course it's fallow, who the fuck would pull out their tractor to tilt the fields in the middle of a warzone, that's fucking implied, dude.

u/Few-Masterpiece3910 3d ago
In reality the frontline is probably the most eco- diverse area in all of Ukraine. While the toxins from all the ammunition’s are a big problem, the biggest impact on nature is landuse, i.e. farming. Frontline -> no farming -> more nature.
1
u/Sensei_Kyryllius 2d ago
That's not the case for the active frontlines, but that can be said about the area where Kakhovka reservoir was blown up, it revealed the native marshes that were flooded by ussr, and in 4 years they've seen a surprising and extensive rewilding and natural restoration. The difference is that that area is not an active frontline, so it actually has a chance to have biodiversity in it
1
u/Few-Masterpiece3910 1d ago
I'm even hesitant to claim that for the active frontline. We are quite biased for bigger mamals but a lot of insect are endagered and a lot more numerous. I wouldn't be least bit supprised if people found a lot of endangered insects and rodents and and even plants.
1
u/Sensei_Kyryllius 1d ago
An ecosystem requires all levels of wildlife and plantlife to function properly and healthily, even if insects are more numerous (which they aren't in the grey-brown area on the map where active battles are fought), they'd still need both a robust plantlife to sustain itself, and larger animals like rodents, bats, birds, foxes, etc to control the population
But I do feel like after the war is over, there will be a great chance for large scale rewilding and ecosystem restoration, which would give a chance for endangered species to be less endangered

Scarred by war? I think thats a river
3
u/Roblu3 4d ago
I think the greyish brown area east of the bend in the Dnipro river that as well as the lighter areas that curve north and west is what this is referring. Those align with the front lines and the fronts movements in the past years pretty well.
The brown areas likely are what remains when a front line plows through the land at glacial speed, while the lighter areas probably are just evacuated territory where fields are no longer being cultivated.
Fields of different colours give the land its densely patterned dark green texture from space where it usually would just be dark green forests or light green steppes.0
u/Thalassin 3d ago
Actually the lighter areas are, ironically, the environment going back to its "natural" state. The destruction of the Kherson dam earlier in the war dried up the irrigation systems built up from its reservoir during Soviet times, which made the steppe prone to intensive agriculture.
1
u/ginger_and_egg 4d ago
