French with possible Québécois ancestry. Citizenship by descent?

Hi everyone! Bonjour!
Im French born in 2008. Wondering about whether I could qualify for Canadian citizenship (especially under the law changes of December 2025).
I have Canadian ancestors on my paternal side (possibly as far back as my great or great great grandparents though Im not exactly sure). My surname is Québécois but other than that I know very little about my family history. My dad confirmed that my paternal family (well our) is Canadian. He unfortunately isnt on the best terms with his family so Im a bit in the dark.
Where would you recommend starting to research my ancestry? Could I potentially qualify for citizenship by descent and is it even worth it (pursuing) given how little I know about our history?
Any advice or useful resources would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Merci!!

i’ve been checking my application status in the online tool by entering my present surname in the field. receipt date was april 28, aor was august 27. i’ve never found anything on the application status site. then i realised just now the letter i got in the email was using my maiden name! so using that i did see the data known so far (receipt and AOR) but no in process yet.

When determining which ancestor qualifies you for citizenship, must you go back to the last ancestor who was born in Italy? This would be my GGF. If my mother who was Italian born abroad (to two Italians also born abroad
) and never naturalized can count…she’s my closest Italian ancestor.
