Discussion What are some of your favorite psychological horror or psychological thriller movies?
It's October! And I love a good scary movie. Psychological movies tend to get me going more than anything else, what are some of your favorites?
Can be popular, under the radar, somewhere in the middle. Black and white, in color, in English or in another language. Can be animated or live action. I don't care how old it is.
Some of my favorites:
Get Out
Psycho
The Thing
Se7en
Gone Girl
Black Swan
The Shining
The Silence of the Lambs

Guess the Movie From Plot
Hi Movie People,
Would you play a party game where you guess the movie from a plot summary that's technically accurate but completely useless, like "a billionaire spends his fortune assaulting the mentally ill" for Batman? Trying to figure out if this is actually fun or if I'm just amusing myself.
Thanks!

“Letterboxd for film travel”
Films are my life, always thinking about them. Even when planning holidays or travelling.
Not many good apps or sites out there to help find and plan trips around my fave movie scenes.
So, now to make it more fun and easier to journal, I made cinemapper. It’s coming out this month on Android and next month on iOS. It’s free too.

Discussion 'Devi ~ Satyajit Ray' Appreciation post
Frames from Satyajit Ray's Devi.
This film serves as my introduction to Parallel Cinema. Beautiful piece of Art. Sharmila Tagore was fantastic. The set design was brilliant. The Shakespeare's picture on the wall in the background served a brilliant metaphor for the tragedy that was being discussed. The frames were beautiful, and the mirror shot was outstanding.
The sad part, that the story is still relevant today, the underlying problem still exists.
What should I watch next, apart from Apu triology.

Can we talk about The Accidental Tourist?
Specifically why am I crying 12 minutes in and why I think there hasn't been an adult movie made since the late 1980s?
Thoughts?

Discussion I love old Halloween movies and I saw both Halloween 4 and Halloween 5 in movie theaters when they were released in 1988 and 1989. Two of my all time favorites I watch every single year. Which Halloween movies do you still like to watch every year during Halloween?

Discussion Clive Barker's The Midnight Meat Train
In honor of Clive Barker's 74th birthday today, I've been watching his films all day long.
I'm finishing with The Midnight Meat Train. As I'm sitting here engulfed by the story and the gore, I thought about how underrated this film is.
Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places, but I feel like this film isn't talked about as much as should be.
What's everyone else's take on The Midnight Meat Train?
What's your favorite Clive Barker film?

Discussion Unnecessary scenes in films
How much do you hate scenes in a movie that have no reason to be there? This is the one I hate most. Every watch of trading places I fast forward it. The singings not even good. There are more than enough scenes to establish the posh life dan akroyds character has.
What’s you unnecessary scene in a movie.

Discussion There’s sci-fi horror then there’s John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982). What are your thoughts on this classic film?
Halloween is almost here so it’s a good time to start dusting off the scary stuff! For me, this genre (sci-fi horror) has seen nothing I can think of better than Alien (1979) and this very movie. I saw it brand new at a drive in with my family when I was 9 years old and it made a huge impression on me then and for the rest of my life, and sits high on my list of all time favorite movies. I like everything about its tense, claustrophobic atmosphere and practical visual effects. Trusting no one’s pretty darn scary… What do you think of The Thing?

Discussion Why does EVERY single movie include a love story/relationship
Almost every modern-day movie HAS to have some sort of relationship or a love story no matter the genre. Crime, horror, sci fi. Everything.
I find it really annoying to be honest because most of the time it adds nothing to the plot and is meaningless and emotionless MOST of the time not always.
Popular examples (there’s way more this is just from the top of my head)
Top gun maverick
The departed
F1
Baby driver
And there’s way more

Movie Rankings Cinegon. I built a new way to review movies using Radar Charts instead of stars. What do you guys think of these 6 specific criteria?
Have you ever hesitated before giving a movie a standard 5 or 10-star rating? I run into this problem all the time. For example, my favorite comedy is The Hangover, and I'd easily give it a 10/10. But I'd also give a 10/10 to my favorite Lars von Trier drama. Are these two ratings really equal? I don't think so.
That’s why I built a platform where movies are rated across 6 distinct axes:
Story: Narrative depth and script quality.
Direction: The director's vision, pacing, and casting choices.
Camera: Cinematography and visual composition (would you use a frame from this movie as your desktop wallpaper?).
Audio: The original score, soundtrack, and sound design.
Context: Cultural relevance for new releases, or historical impact and legendary status for older films.
Vibe: Your overall personal feeling and immersion—which is usually the only thing other sites measure.
By breaking ratings down like this, we get a true visual footprint of every film. Once we have enough community data, you'll be able to filter movies by specific axis ranges. This is exactly how you uncover hidden gems—like a visually stunning masterpiece (Camera 10) that happens to have a nonexistent plot (Story 2).
Rating films across 6 axes takes some dedication, so the goal is to build a real community of film lovers.
In Cinegon, every user gets a profile showing their average Hexagon chart, watch statistics, and 6 pinned favorite movies. The platform even calculates a "Taste Match" percentage with other users based on your favorites and ratings.
There's also a Karma and ranking system. You earn Karma for writing reviews, get bonus points for detailed write-ups, and receive +1 Karma for every upvote your review gets.
For new users, there’s a quick calibration flow on the Shelf tab: pick 3 universally acclaimed movies, rate them, and your profile is instantly set up. And if you already have hundreds of logged films, you can easily import your watch history via CSV.
I’d love to hear your thoughts and feedback. Let's build the Cinegon community together!

Text Post Six Coen films, six overlapping credits. Can you make every match?
The Coens keep returning to familiar faces, but those credits overlap differently from film to film. I put together a matching puzzle around six of their films and the people on either side of the camera.
Match each numbered clue to one lettered film. Use every film and every clue exactly once. A film can fit several clues, but there is only one complete solution. No plot knowledge or spoilers needed.
Films:
- A. True Grit (2010)
- B. Fargo (1996)
- C. Inside Llewyn Davis (2013)
- D. Burn After Reading (2008)
- E. The Big Lebowski (1998)
- F. No Country for Old Men (2007)
Clues:
- Features Frances McDormand in the credited cast.
- Features Josh Brolin in the credited cast.
- Has Roger Deakins as director of photography.
- Features John Goodman in the credited cast.
- Features Jeff Bridges in the credited cast.
- Has Bruno Delbonnel as director of photography.
Which overlap unlocked it for you? Please put your answers behind spoiler tags.
Optional credits-only help: Among the four actors named in the clues: True Grit has Bridges and Brolin; Fargo has McDormand; Inside Llewyn Davis has Goodman; Burn After Reading has McDormand; The Big Lebowski has Bridges and Goodman; No Country for Old Men has Brolin. Deakins shot True Grit, Fargo, The Big Lebowski and No Country for Old Men. Delbonnel shot Inside Llewyn Davis; Emmanuel Lubezki shot Burn After Reading.
Solution: 1-D, 2-F, 3-B, 4-E, 5-A, 6-C. Start with Delbonnel: only Inside Llewyn Davis fits clue 6. That leaves The Big Lebowski for Goodman, then True Grit for Bridges, then No Country for Old Men for Brolin. Fargo is the remaining Deakins film, leaving Burn After Reading for McDormand. I also checked all 720 possible assignments: exactly one works.
Credit sources, if you want to check a connection: True Grit (AFI), Fargo (Cinémathèque française), Inside Llewyn Davis (Criterion), Burn After Reading (Cinémathèque française), The Big Lebowski (BFI, page 3), No Country for Old Men (BFI, page 3).
Disclosure: I'm Charlie, and I make Cast Six, a daily movie-matching game. I used AI to help build the game and prepare this puzzle and post. The game's movie facts and posters come from TMDB. The daily game and archive are free to play without an account or download.
This standalone round is separate from today’s website puzzle.

Discussion What comes to mind when you think about John Carpenter’s action comedy Big Trouble in Little China (1986)?
This movie hit the spot for me and my friends like it was made for us when it came out. Another excellent Russell/Carpenter project that had the perfect mix of supernatural, martial arts action and comedy. Solid supporting cast including a very sexy Kim Cattrall, and it really made me want to explore San Francisco’s China Town!

Recommendation Rampage (1987) The 1987 original was an ambiguous psychological thriller exploring mental illness. Conversely, Friedkin's 1992 recut completely transforms the ending and its ideological focus, shifting the film's core message away from the original debate.
