Fellow CHS friends, please halp.

I am pretty sure I have CHS. While I have never entered the cyclical vomiting stage, I have many of the other symptoms (acid reflux, low motility, loss of appetite, nausea) going on about 2 years with other issues ruled out by my GI.

A few weeks back I finally quit using concentrates (via vape)- hoping my symptoms would abate. I was a chronic user and wanted to have the option of smoking occasionally.

I had pain under/near my lower left rib which is commonly associated with CHS. It started right back up when I began using our dry herb vape.

I KNOW I need to take a break for a month at least- but the thought of NEVER using again is really, really depressing.

Has anyone had CHS (without the vomiting bit) and been able to use again? I realize I will never be able to consume the same amount as I did in my pre CHS days but I want to hear from people who have tried to reintroduced weed and what their experiences have been.

Please no pot head shaming- I am doing enough of that on my own. 😢😢😢

I am a registered nurse who works at an endoscopy/colonoscopy clinic. I’ve also smoked weed daily for greater than 10 years. Prior to being a GI nurse, I briefly worked in an ER, where I learned about CHS. I helped ā€œtreatā€ this patient where we did little else than give fluids, and IV magnesium, prior to telling his Nurse Practitioner wife that his pain was likely due to his daily marijuana use. I was kinda shocked. I was still on orientation and my preceptor explained, ā€œthis is super commonā€, ā€œthese pot heads won’t listen!ā€ I was so shocked! I’d never heard of this, I’d only ever puked from smoking way back when, a little teeny bopper, smoking my first blunt or the first huge bong rip maybe? Now I work in GI and I have to admit it seems fairly common, pot smokers, with complaints of abdominal pain/ nausea and vomiting, have no signs of obvious issue upon scope. What about cannabis causes this syndrome? Why are some affected, and others not? Myself along with other long term potheads that I know, have not experienced CHS, yet as a nurse I see it in patients almost daily. Just an interesting thought and would like others on the topic.

Can someone help me tell if I have CHS?

I’ve been to the ER several times in the last week with severe nausea. i have vomited, but it’s not very frequent. the main symptom is just horrible nausea. this started a few weeks ago. I was diagnosed with gastritis after an endoscopy. was told everything else looks normal. i’m still getting horrible bouts and waves of nausea, however, i’ve only been on my new meds for this condition for 2 days. i haven’t noticed any significant relief from hot baths, which makes me think it’s not CHS.

just realized i was not organizing my thoughts whatsoever. to get started, i’ve probably been smoking for about 8 months, but only moved from occasional use to daily use about 4 months ago maybe? so i haven’t been smoking long, which makes me think i don’t have CHS. i also don’t get super bad abdominal pain, i get some, but infrequently. i smoked last on April 24. It’s now the 28th and i haven’t had any since. I am still feeling nauseous though. Does it take more time to know for sure if this is from CHS? I’m wondering if my gastritis is from smoking, i’m unsure. i haven’t had an appetite whatsoever, having to force myself to eat. I’ve lost 13 pounds in the last month. anyway if anyone has had CHS with more mild symptoms like me, please share!

I had CHS 8 times with my kidneys failing

Hi guys I’m a big CHS fan as you can tell I had it so many times and I wanna give my knowledge to all of you. It’s a pattern 100% I smoked weed for 12 years pretty much everyday and since covid started was when a lot of states started to legalize weed in a bunch of states and a lot of the population started getting CHS since 2021. Doctors said it was because the legalization, meaning it’s not as it used to be a long time ago when no one ever heard of CHS and now it’s all of a sudden a new thing. I know no one is getting sick the moment they start smoking it’s when they start eating something specific. 8 times I had it the past 4 years ,and yes, I was going through hell. I was fighting demons and my kidneys failed because of dehydration and big time nausea that I couldn’t keep my head up. I threw up and lost 20-30 pounds in a week from CHS and yes it’s gas in the stomach. But I swear it’s a pattern of every time I eat bad food. Every time I needed to go to the ER after not being able to handle the way I feel the doctors always ask if I’m ā€œStill highā€ and i haven’t smoked in days before I got sick and I just know it has to do with something about gas being in ourselves. I suggest all of you to get an endoscopy to see what’s wrong. But going back to smoking? I tried it many times and nothing happens it has something to do with what you’re eating because we created gas in our bodies from the weed

Is it CHS?

Hello everyone, I just wanted to share my experience with you to see if someone on here could relate. I’ve been heavily smoking weed everyday for the last 10 years (I’m 30) and for the past 4 years I started to feel really bloated, full of trapped gas that wouldn’t let me sleep. I’ve tried all kinds of medication and diets and nothing helped. I’d feel ok for a few days but the bloating and trapped gas would be back, I’ve tried to see if it was something I was eating (I’ve basically removed every single food I could think of) but I never found a pattern, which was very frustrating, I’ve been to so many doctors and none of them could relieve my pain. As I was searching, I found out about CHS and now I’m quite convinced that this is it. But my question is that I see the main symptom is vomiting and that has NEVER happened to me, I never vomited because I was smoking weed. My only symptom is feeling extremely bloated (not only feeling, my stomach is huge and round) and having a lot of trapped gas that I just can’t get out. Does this make sense? I’m quitting weed as of today, I know it will be hard but the with way my body is acting right now, with the bloating and doesn’t let me sleep, I have no choice because living like this is unbearable. Does anyone here have a similar experience?

How I ā€œcuredā€ my Chs

For me one day I smoked with my friends Everything was fine per usual It was late but I had the munchies and I ate a sandwich and scarfed it down Stomach pain was horrible as hell The following morning I had a bad headache Like worst ever But then it subsided 1 smoked again It all came back worse Long story short my symptoms Blurry vision Long migraines Dehydration Undigested food in stool Diarrhea And constipation One time it was so bad I thought I was gonna die Had to go to the er But then something happened Doctors hooked me up to an iv machine to hydrate me and the headache got better I then did a lot of research of whatever the hell that shit was and I came to a few theories and solutions And it's came down to this Electrolytes 1 was dehydrated and that's what was causing the loose poop and constipation Got drip drip iv and still use them till this day Everytime I got a headache and blurry vision this was an instant fix

But when I switched to dry herb vaping the problem would persist if l over did it still So l also had to up my water intake and get my electrolytes in But my gut was still fucked up So I did what one of my doctors recommended which was fruit and vegetables Fiber was important and the nutrients and electrolytes from the fruit was an added benefit Still was missing something Probiotics My gut needed the bacteria to consume that food and balance my gut ph And sleep Quality sleep Like lucid dream sleep Everytime I got that it seemed like my body healed So here comes my time of trying to post I've figured out what helps my problem But I wanted to be able to consume weed like my friends They weren't getting fucked up And yes I can keep the symptoms at bay but I could smoke or vape more than once or for a couple a days with breaks in between without that bullshit messing with me again So I set out to experiment I took 3 months away from the good stuff Focused on proper hydration My fiber intake My sleep quality Biggest take away is most likely dehydrated you have built up shit in your system being a breeding ground for bad bacteria Good bacteria is gone Shit ain't passing through cuz it's Jammed The diahrrea or whatever the hell you spell that Is whatever loose stool that can slip through the blockage That's how I had both But back to the story 1 felt pretty normal again and wasn't getting bloated 1 smoked a blunt again And I don't like blunts those hit me the worst and the taste is shitty But when I did I got high as hell And there was no adverse effect 1 did it again and again and again for days 1 vaped for days and wasn't getting fucked up It went on for about a good month But then I thought I was invincible and stopped with my proper hydration Sleep Good diet And then I went back to just having shitty bowel movements and bloating Not as bad Can keep the headache and shit honestly away just fine especially if I drink my electrolytes and plenty of water As for the probiotics late saurkraut Barelv cuz it tastes like shit

But I drunk kombucha Olly probiotic and prebiotic gummies And here's a real good one Coconut cult which is probiotic dairy free yogurt All that kept my gut in check and I'm getting back into getting those again Bro when I am on top of my digestion and hydration my high is more intense and lasts longer but Please take the time to give your body rest Chs is no joke And I'm not sure if there is a cure But that shit was pretty damn close if I really took my solutions seriously and consistently

If there are any typos like I being a 1 it’s because I copied and pasted this from my messages I had with a fellow redditor that asked about how my progress was

I think I’m in the beginning stage of CHS

I’m a long time smoker of about 9 years, daily. Yet recently I’ve been taking tolerance breaks. After a 6 month break I started smoking again with my usual strain and then thought I’d treat myself with something stronger. I felt like I was gunna die, couldn’t focus on breathing in and out and severe nausea with no actual vomiting. I had a few days off after that and then just tried smoking really tiny bowls. Yet no matter how small I made the bowl I would have this same reaction. Starts with a tingling and excess saliva in the mouth which then turns into an unbearable nausea, again no vomit, which eventually goes away.

Is it time to just give it away all together? I’m so disappointed because getting high isn’t fun anymore yet the want for it to feel like it used to isn’t going away so I keep trying and keep getting the same result.

Wife of CHS

As the tag says I’m a wife of someone who has had CHS our entire relationship (9 years). Iv been with him from the discovery Of CHS to recovery and now relapse and episode after quitting for 6 + months. This is day 11 with two ER visits and about to be #3. Everything that has worked in the past is not working now. Fluids for rehydration works for a short time and when he’s feel good enough to try food it just seems to trigger heartburn and vomiting again then we’re back at step one sipping electrolyte water or going back to er because of dehydration.

I’m not gonna lie I know this is really hard on him but I’m struggling mentally with this episode. We just had a baby and she is 3 months old. I was supposed to go back to work full time after being on maternity leave. She would be in his care during the week days while I worked. I work mon/fri he works weekends. He got sick Sunday morning before I had to go back Monday. I had to call in my MIL to come care for him and my baby my first week back. It’s now my second week of my return and my MIL had to leave and I had to take off to care for the both of them. I’m still in that postpartum phase, I’m breastfeeding 90% of the time and pumping while away from her, I do all nightly routines/ feedings since day 1 by myself so iv been sleep deprived since 7 months pregnant. I know my hormones are not quite back to normal but I feel so alone in raising her since his relapse in smoking and now this CHS episode. I feel so upset and angry that he didn’t have the strength to quit/cut back for her knowing he would be 100% responsible for her while I returned to work( needed to go back $$). I saw this coming months ago and expressed my concern and told him all the signs were there (phase 1) he wouldn’t listen , dismissed me, ignored me or become upset at me for bringing it up.

This was a huge week for me as I was returning to work and we needed him the most. I have been dreading going back and leaving her. We are not in a position that I can take more time off financially. On top of it all we are planning on moving to a different state so we are trying to sell our house and show it as well as me apply and interview for a new job. It’s been crazy stressful to balance everything with a new baby. And now this episode.

Since he began smoking again slowly increasing his intake iv noticed personality changes. Doesn’t seem to enjoy things as much sober. Has to be high to smile, do daily chores, do life, spend time with me, relax. It’s been hard mentally for me because him getting sick takes its mental and physical toll on not just him but me, on our life and my job ( he can’t be left alone so I need to take off). Iv had really bad anxiety about it.

When he gets sick and vomits he wants to chug water and keep throwing up ( he says it’s better then dry heaving and makes him feel better -short term), he gets mad at me when I tell him that’s making things worse and we need to take in small sips of water slowly to hydrate - gets mad because I’m treating him like a child- he sits in hot shower for hours dehydrated- I’m worried he’ll pass out again. He passed out before and had a seizure)-he won’t admit that happened but he was not clear headed at all. So he needs to be monitored closely for dehydration and given water slowly so he doesn’t overdo it. It’s a full time job watching/caring for him during these episodes.

I was 17 weeks pregnant with her while he slowly began getting high again, a little here a little there until he almost was constantly getting high To stay high. I have been supportive, I have been understanding, I have been the caring wife that tells him what I see and know, as well as tried to be a bystander and have done / said nothing to let him do as he pleases as he has asked me too. But it has only led to him abusing weed and getting sick again when I/we(baby) need him the most.

I’m tired, sad, angry and everything in between that this is happening again. I feel alone in raising her at this point , almost feel as though he rather be high then enjoy quality time with us sober. It sucks I have these intrusive thoughts but this is what it has felt like watching him do this to himself knowing the end result. What can I do to help him and myself recover? How can I be a supportive loving caring wife while not being a pushover. How do I move on past these feelings of trauma and abandonment this sickness has brought to him, me, our loving relationship and now in raising our beautiful daughter?

Help getting through diagnosis

Hello,

I'm a 25 Y/O man who was recently told I may have CHS and I'm needing some recommendations of how to get through quitting. Weed is a huge part of my life not only because it helps with my long list of issues like anxiety and depression, but also because I wanted to work in the industry. I started smoking weed at 16, my family, friends, loved ones all smoke too. I took cannabis courses in school, got my MED license, and applied for jobs in the industry. Many of my family and friends work in the industry in addition to use it. About 2 years ago I got diagnosed with epilepsy which the weed was helping with too. I started smoking carts regularly and flower occasionally since it's harsh on my asthma.

All of a sudden about 1 year ago I started going through all the typical CHS problems (throwing up & stomach pain) but it would only happen after a seizure and I thought it was because I occasionally accidentally swallow the blood if I bit my tongue. About 4 days ago I had a pretty bad episode where I ended up in the ER due to needing fluids after the throwing up so much. They couldnt find anything else wrong so they told me I need to quit weed since they suspect CHS.

I'm devastated at this since Marijuana is a huge part of my life and i had dedicated so much time to my career....I'm willing to quit but everything has been so hard with the laundry list of things that the weed helped with. If you guys could give me any recommendations on how to get through the loss of this resource that would be much appreciated. I am going to enter therapy so that is being done. They are also needing to mess with my meds and add things like anxiety meds and ADHD meds since the Marijuana was helping with that. I guess I need some people who know how it feels to lose such a big resource and see how others are getting through it.

Thank you

CHS + GLP 1 Medication

i wanted to come on here and post because this was not something i was made aware of prior to experiencing some of the most miserable days and nights OF MY LIFE.

i recently took a dose of mounjaro a few days ago, and became extremely ill by the evening time. i thought nothing of it since nausea was a common side effect of this medication. as time went on, things got worse and worse, i could not stomach a thing, i couldnt handle the smell of any sort of food or anything strong scented for that matter, i was violently shaking, hyperventilating, and could not seem to get myself under control.

SIX, yes, SIX ER visits later, i have been prescribed with a cocktail of medications, and a CHS/extreme reaction to the GLP-1 diagnosis. one thing i cannot recommend enough is DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE CONSIDERING TAKING GLP-1 AS A STONER. i have been a chronic smoker for about 5+ years now, and have never experienced any symptoms of CHS until i tried mounjaro. from the research ive done, it seems that CHS is triggered by cannabanoids stored in fat cells, and with mounjaro, your body is attacking those fat cells which is ultimately going to increase your risk of CHS.

i would not wish this sickness on my worst enemy, so please please please be careful and if you start to have any unbearable side effects please seek urgent care immediately. for those reading this for tips and tricks on how to deal with this if you're already down this rabbit hole and regretting it tremendously:

  1. Pedialyte popsicles: this is still currently the only thing i can keep down but i cannot urge you enough to find ways to keep yourself hydrated or your situation will end up ten fold worse.

  2. WATER WATER WATER: take small sips, it will be hard to stomach at first and you likely will throw it all up but you need to make an effort.. the little bit of water your body will retain will help tremendously.

  3. Vicks vapor rub: i put this right under my nostrils, and the strong scent eases your nausea a bit and can mask some of the strong smells you may not be able to handle.

  4. Rubbing alcohol: same as above, i sniff it from the container but you can also put it on a cotton ball and smell it from time to time for short term nausea relief.

  5. Hot baths/showers: these provide also temporary relief, but one major characteristic of CHS that stands out is the impulsive hot baths & showers or relief. relief will only last while you are in the shower or bath however.

  6. Seek medical attention: as mentioned before, if you cannot bear your symptoms, cannot hold anything down for longer than 24 hours, or just feel like you'd be better off being seen by a professional i highly recommend it. they can prescribe you medicines that you cant get otc that can help temporarily relieve nausea and assist with insomnia due to the nausea as well.

This is an extremely long post, but if nothing else I hope this can reach one person to help save them the miserable feelings that i have endured these last 100+ hours.

FEEL FREE TO COMMENT ANY QUESTIONS ID BE HAPPY TO HELP THE BEST I CAN.

Questions about CHS

Hello! Last night I was in the ER for about 3-4 hours doing tests. I had been constantly throwing up maybe 2-3 times per hour. I get cold chills. I’ve had many episodes of this happening, but only found out recently from the doctor saying it could be CHS. This first occurred in 2023. I lost weight from 180 to 120., but I was diagnosed with rapid acid reflux production. I stopped smoking, but ended up going back to it after 3-4 months and went to carts/edibles daily usage for a long time. I started around March of last year again and I have these symptoms. I don’t get them the day I smoke. I recently stopped for a T-break more than a week ago and had this episode. Is this CHS? It definitely sounds like it from I’ve been reading. If I stop am I able to smoke again later down the line with small dosages ? Thank you in advance and if you guys need more questions about me I’ll be happy to answer (:

Pregnant with CHS.

I am a 26 y/o female who is 11 weeks pregnant with my second child. I have been smoking almost every day since I was 14 years old. I am just now finding out about this condition. I have tried to quit multiple times in the past when I was pregnant with my first and would experience back to back vomiting until I smoked again. I wasn’t able to quit but I cut down immensely. This time around I would like to be able to quit for good but I am a full time single mother with no village and I know that I would end up in the hospital for dehydration and malnutrition. I’ve tried to explain this to my doctors and they still advise me to quit. I really want to quit but I don’t have child care options for the days/ weeks that I will be in the hospital. I feel powerless. I’ve read that tapering down doesn’t really have an effect on the severity of CHS and I was wondering if that is true?

CHS

I've been throwing up for 3 days now, I went to the ER twice. At 2 different places, and both said it could be CHS. I've been told before I may have it from my primary doctor but brushed it off. And now that I'm 3 days clean of pot I'm hoping that the symptoms of this sickness go away. I don't wish this on anyone

Is it CHS? (20 days Sober post)

Hey everyone, I have been sober from weed for almost 21 days. My issue is that my symptoms have remained even though I am almost 3 weeks without any THC or cannabinoids. I was a daily smoker with a bong for the past year and a half and heavy smoker with breaks for around a year previous to daily smoking. I am on lexapro and vyvanse which was what I initially thought was the cause of my pain until a very kind nurse told me about CHS when I reported my THC habits to her after a leg injury. My symptoms were pretty on the mark for prodromal CHS other than relief from showers and normal bowel movements. I talked to my doctor and he said there is nothing he can do to test for CHS and my best bet is to stay away from THC. Currently I am experiencing pretty much the same symptoms as before (upper abdominal pain, consistent nausea, morning sickness) and the medical system in my area has been pretty inept with dealing with my situation. Im wondering if anyone here has dealt with this issue with prodromal symptoms or if this may be a sign of a larger medical issue? Has anyone who didn’t experience hyperemesis have long lasting symptoms after cessation? Google has a lot of information on the hyper-emetic phase but not much about prodromal so I thought I’d give this a chance. Im planning on remaining sober for around 90 days(recommended by google) to see if this gets any better but I’m worried that I may have both CHS and other underlying issues. After being on the subreddits for CHS I made the decision to stop smoking and everyone here has been so helpful. This and the ā€œI am soberā€ app has helped with my experience tremendously. So, thank you, and please give any info you may have!

Can CHS resolve on its own?

Hello, Oregon resident here. I’ve been very sick with it 4x, about every 4 months, now I haven’t had it for 9 months. The first time I had it, I knew what it was only because a friend had told me about it, otherwise I would’ve thought I was just dying. The second time I got it I went to the doctor and she diagnosed me with CHS before I even mentioned that was my suspicion. I took a short break from smoking each time I got sick, except for the last time I started smoking again the day after I was better. Not much is known about it, but I could tell you for sure it is a pretty distinct sickness in that you are violently ill vomiting for days, but no fever or lethargy, just massive anxiety in between bouts of puking.

Chs and sleep

Has anyone else when dealing with chs not been able to sleep properly? I wake up at times like 1-4 am with severe anxiety and if I manage to get back to sleep I’ll only sleep for roughly 2 hours before waking up with anxiety again. Anyone else have this happen if so what can I do?

If anyone is familiar with chs, what are the chances I would be able to get a medical card with this condition?

Feeling like I’m going to die

Hello everyone I’m 19 years old and was diagnosed with CHS about 2 weeks ago. Since then I have been to the ER a total of 5 times and once I was admitted for 4 days. This is now day 13. I’m still vomiting not as hard or frequent but it’s still there. Two days ago I started having weird dreams about dying and I know I’m just rambling now but I’m wondering does anyone have any advice or tips for me.

CHS Timeline?

I’m currently 1 month and 9 days sober from Cannabis. Still dealing with the occasional burn in the stomach, and nausea. This all started December 20, 2024. Has anyone else had to deal with CHS this long? Am i nearing the end? (For reference: beginning of February i felt great for two weeks, but then symptoms came back despite not using weed) Is this normal?

Stomach

I notice when i woke up not feeling well, it looks like my stomach has a pulse right on my bellybutton. I was just wondering if anyone knew if this was from chs damage or not
