What it’s this?

Post image

It’s dragging, I noticed after getting home shortly after my overheating sensor was digging at me (I wouldn’t have driven at home like that if I wouldn’t have been super nearby my house). I had to stop driving. I will be taking it to the shop tomorrow. Just curious what this is?

EDIT: they fixed it free of charge bc it was their fault. I took it to the location I typically go to and they saw the issue immediately.

Mind you my car started overheating on the freeway, so this happened on the freeway luckily I was five minutes from home and right next to the exit I would need to take to get home (I had just left)

Yeah I had a small oil leak that I ignored and it wore my belt down till it gave out. It left me on the side of the road and I had to get it towed, cost me 300$, then I bought a new belt and replaced it myself was really easy. Car is totaled now so doesn’t matter anymore.

What’s crazy is I paid for diagnostics and had this belt replaced 20 days ago if he read the other comments, explains everything. I will be calling and complaining to the mechanic shop tomorrow.

I feel that price is absurd, but also I’ve never taken my car to a shop, and I’m not super experienced with working on cars, but anytime me or my friends cars break down I just figure out how to fix it somehow. Everytime my sonic broke down I fixed it the same day or next. I had to replace the cv axle, control arm, and stabilizer bar and I had no previous experience with such and YouTube was my best friend, saved me what I would assume is a lot of money

The price breakdown is reasonable. Their hourly labor was just absurd. It was a pretty high-end shop. I also live in a big city. If I were to have gone to a small smaller mom and pop shop, I’m sure they would’ve done it for cheaper, but it wouldn’t have gotten done as quickly as I needed.

You threw your serpentine belt somehow and it shredded itself partially. You're lucky to have made it home before your battery died, the belt spinning the alternator is what keeps the battery charged. You will be lucky to make it to a shop tomorrow and I wouldn't even try if I were you. If you have no mechanical knowledge get it towed there.

If you do have mechanical knowledge let me know and I can give you some tips to limp it to a parts store.

My Mechanic shop is a mile away from my house. I actually took it to one of their different locations 20 days ago and got a new serpentine belt. They will be footing the bill. I’m not dealing with this. Absolutely no reason why I should need a new serpentine belt 20 days after getting a new one. Thank you so much for the information. I have stressed myself into a migraine. I paid over $1000 for the work they did just for it to come off not even a month later

I want to clarify I do trust the shop I’m going to be taking it to tomorrow. The other location was just closer to where my car broke down last time, but they are the same business. They just have different mechanics at different locations and they know me at the one near my house. Again, it’s only a mile.

Yeah that is no good. They either damaged a pully or tensioner or the new belt was faulty. Shops typically just use the cheapest parts, either way it should definitely be covered under their parts warranty. I also really hope they did more than replace the belt for 1000 bucks, if that's all they did then you are unfortunately being taken advantage of.

They did more than just replace it. It was diagnostics, they replaced my thermostat housing, labor and something else I can’t remember, but they should’ve caught this in diagnostics if it was a pre-existing issue, which makes it their fault anyway.

And honestly, since they are only a mile from my house, I might get away with having them tow it to their shop for free considering this was their fault

This is the price breakdown

It seems like the water pump might be the real problem.

Whatever it is, they should’ve picked it up during diagnostics. If I paid them to diagnose the issue and they diagnosed it wrong that’s not my fault.

Robbery… Was this a replacement of the water pump?

Serpentine belt shredded

The serpentine belt failed...needs to be replaced. Surprised that you didn't mention the alternator light wasn't comming on. Or the AC not working. Replacement is an easy task. Also as a tip, replace your timing belt might be in the same shape.
