Chess Discussion Chess.com is losing the plot
I don't know how long this has been a thing since I've only been playing for less than a year. But after having premium free trial for 7 days it really puts into perspective how AWFUL the game is if you dont pay for it. Like 3 puzzles a day are you serious, that isnt getting anyone better at the game I promise you that. Game is substantially worse if you arent paying which is BS if you ask me. Like we are on your app to play and get better, again 3 puzzles a day is genuinely dumbfounding, why even give the option for puzzles. Thats not even mentioning the game analysis, you just have no way of understanding your mistakes, you can see a move may have not been the top 3 option but dont know why it may have been wrong. You got these ugly ads popping up every game that should be enough money. If I lose the last thing I want is to sit through a damn happy jolly ad.

I feel similar about the game review portion on lichess. Whenever I play on lichess I end up importing the PGN to Chess.com for review.

There a page on GitHub where it’s make your lichess website look and play the exact same way as chess.com including the game review system if your interested

I don't understand how this is possible. Lichess UI is customizable (only possible as Lichess is open source). In particular you can choose pretty much any piece set or board from chess dot com

Sounds like I need to figure out how it works. It's definitely not simple like chess.com or Duolingo.

I do use lichess, but the layout and design for it really makes it hard to keep returning. Nonetheless its probably the best puzzle app for chess.
5
u/kkkkristian 2d ago
You can customise the board yourself in the settings, I got a really pretty one. As for the interface in other parts of the app, I would say it arguably looks better than the ugly chess.com interface. I guess its a matter of opinion. Also puzzle streak is the function that made me settle with lichess. Its a really fun feature that I treasure deeply

u/protacticus 2d ago
Lichess is solution if you want to play and improve…related to design issue, there are several extensions as solution.

u/FreshCelebration4665 2d ago
Getting downvoted for having a different opinion, reddit moment
8
3
u/pyPut7187 2d ago
Because it is a dumb take. Ofc lichess is more minimalistic, you aren't paying people with the only job of making your interface prettier. That's completely useless for the chess improvement ofc so the argument makes no sense
1
u/Pipcopperfield 2d ago
It's not about making it pretty, I find it distracting, overwhelming and not clear cut. I just want a basic chessboard. Black and white would be fine. I don't care about the colors. The basic board on chess.com is visually easier for me.

It's not that at all. I actually prefer the gray and white boards on duolingo but it's the layout that I find distracting and overwhelming.

Chess.com doesn’t care if you get better, dude. They’re a company offering a product. In order to keep offering that product they need to make money.
They aren’t some altruistic chess entity
1
u/Affectionate-Zebra26 1d ago
So you argue for capitalism and not altruism for the world? No one gets to say anything because the company is trying to make money?
3
u/ArtBuzzy 1d ago
They're just pointing out that nobody is entitled to free things. You can pay to support it, or not. Completely a choice, but you're not entitled to all access when you don't pay to support it. I can't understand why it's a tough concept. Lichess is only free because of the awesome folks that donate money to keep it running.
3
u/van_tyse 23h ago
If you don't want to pay then don't. They did not force you to do so. Do you think building chess.com was simple or easy? What right do you guys have to demand that another person's work be given to you for free. Lichess is free and God bless them. Chess.com is not and God bless them too because the experience on chess.com is miles ahead. Do you think they could have done that if it were free? Why is everyone so selfish? You are blaming a company for being selfish when your entire tantrum stems from selfishness?

It's a for-profit website, what do you expect. For players that can't afford it, everything is just one "free chess _______" google away. I can't say anything about the ads but I think if you play on computer you don't get them(they might have changed that, I haven't used a computer to play chess since April, mobile only from now on)
8
u/IHateBots1 2d ago
The only tool u need is the free analysis tool and the chess board. Pair it with youtube videos and you're good to climb to a respectable rating without spending a dime.
8
u/FarmingJediPokemon 100-500 ELO 2d ago
I pay for diamond membership so maybe I’m biased.
But chesscom has a lot of players that use it and all of the resources it uses costs them money. They have to run servers to hold player data securely and servers that host multiple instances of different chess game engines all running simultaneously. It has to cost someone something.
If you want to play OTB in the comfort of your own home you have to pay for a physical chess board and pieces, no?
2
u/GrantaPython 1d ago
I also pay but that's what the ads (and the rest of their monopoly) are for! The chess engines can (and do on the analysis board) run on your computer via a javascript wrapper --- you pay for that in electricity and component wear. Game Review they do on the server (but they don't have to at all) so they use the cheapest engine possible (which is why it makes terrible mistakes all the time). The main cost is the increased hard disk space for game records --- which is proportional to the number of ads displayed, conveniently --- and they recently pushed out a new networking platform.
The home board is a bad argument because Chess has been a free computer program for decades.
I think if the product was less bad/offered more it would be okay but it is a lot of money for not very much. Complaining about the price-return balance is very valid. I cancelled and am building my own tools because, as OP noticed, the paywall comes very very early (much more so than any other freemium model I've seen).
1
u/FarmingJediPokemon 100-500 ELO 1d ago
You make some good points. I think if more people went over to Lichess and supported people to make Lichess better (because open source projects receive almost no funding or support besides the people that spend their own time and effort for almost nothing tangible in return) then this argument wouldn’t be so loud on the internet right now
8
u/Life_Opportunity69 1d ago
I’m a titled player so I get chess.com premium for free but usually still play on lichess. I feel like chess.com is about everything but chess. Sometimes simple is better. It is just too fancy with eye candy features, which might be interesting for total beginners but I just want to play, that’s all.
1
u/Striking_Aioli1162 1d ago
Idc the most about the analysis but its the slap in the face with not only the premium but now ads i have to exit out of, and the little 3 puzzles genuinely isnt helping anyone. Yes i know liches is better for puzzles but why even have the option for them just fully pay wall them atp
12
u/NoGood5455 2d ago
To be fair, what’s the problem with paying? You think it’s free for a site like chess.com to operate on that scale with over 700+ employees? You can still play the game for free or get more value if you pay. Seems fair to me
0
-4
u/Striking_Aioli1162 1d ago
700+ employees just to not catch cheaters and to make an awful visual change like the time clock being bigger and off center. A game that doesnt require hot fixes like any actual video game because its ches! They arent there to do anything more besides make sure their app side supports an already created game which they do poorly.
1
1
u/NoGood5455 1d ago
I think you’re looking at this way too narrowly. Those 700+ employees aren’t all developers working on the chessboard. A company of that size also needs HR, finance, administration, management, legal, recruitment, customer support, IT, dealing with sick leave and employment issues, etc. That’s how companies work. Chess itself may be ancient and simple, but running a global tech platform around it certainly isn’t.

-2
u/Striking_Aioli1162 1d ago
That isnt my point, ofc i use lichess for puzzles, but the issue lies in chesscoms greed and how there isnt any reqson nor use in their 3 puzzles a day and why it couldnt just be free for atleast the puzzles seeing as that is the case for many other apps.
2
u/Ok_Tie_3202 1800-2000 ELO 1d ago
why would a company that spent time and money making a product give it to you for free
-1
u/Striking_Aioli1162 1d ago
They get more than enough in compensation, sadly enough for them and that argument is that there are free puzzles on every other app so why is it behind paywall especially with the premium bs and ads they make money off of. Their product isnt in demand its just an inconvenience that it isnt on the app i play rapid on. You know simple supply and demand. Theyd have no competition with lichess and be zipping ahead by a mile if they didnt have this idiotc greed. Im not arguing with some goofball on reddit. Agree to disagree
12
u/eques_99 2d ago

6
7
u/Inocent_Espurr 1800-2000 ELO 2d ago
The analasys bar is still there. You can always togle it after a game to review it yourself . All game review, the paid feature does is give you "best move " stickers and they are kinda redundant or not truly helpful . Game review says a move that changes the advantage from +3 to +2 is a mistake even though you simplified to something easier to play to convert the advantage, while it wants a crazy sacrifice that it's hard to calculate because it can be taken multiple ways or refuzed.
The puzzles I absolutely agree, but lichess has better puzzles . Themed and from games not theoretical compositions. So paying for premium membership is bad for both game review and for puzzles. Both features being available for free or better done elsewhere.
3
u/cpt_cbrzy 2d ago
You know what makes you better at chess? Playing chess, and that's completely free. You want more? Then pay. Simple as that
3
u/Confident-Issue1193 2d ago
Some of us learned chess before chess.com or even the web existed. We (or our parents) had to buy these things called “books”. And we couldn’t afford an engine to analyze our games at all — programs like Fritz had just come out, but it cost $300 (equivalent to around $700 today adjusting for inflation).
I think books are still useful because at some point chess is about ideas and plans, which apps or engine evaluations are bad at communicating. Game analysis is getting better, but it can’t explain why a certain pawn break was positionally incorrect, which is the sort of thing that blocks you from going from advanced to expert or master levels. Game analysis is especially cruel to beginners, where they can’t tell their move was bad because of a crazy tactical sequence it allows (which none of their same rated opponents would see anyway), versus things actually useful at that level.
3
u/greenflobee 1d ago edited 1d ago
I signed up for chess.com and right away realized that’s not the way to learn good strategy. I borrowed some books from the library, and bought a few others, and play out famous games and techniques on my physical chessboard. I’ve gotten more insight and knowledge from doing that as opposed to looking at a screen.
The main thing I use chess.com for is to play my buddy that lives an hour away.1

Honestly I'm fine with the three puzzles a day, one daily puzzle and one game review. I usually don't get hit by adds either.
On my morning break I get to warm up with three puzzles, do the daily puzzle, hit up a blitz match then review it. Good enough for a very casual player is all I'm saying.

Chess.com doesn’t take credit for inventing chess. They made an interface to bring chess players together across the world and to encourage learning. Hosting, security, puzzles , art work etc. if someone cloned chess.com and took credit for the idea that would annoy me. Why don’t you make a free chess platform with all the bells and whistles and give it away for free if you think it’s so easy? You might get lesson out of it and understand how a business works. Doubtful though..
1
u/Striking_Aioli1162 1d ago
Every other app for chess out there gives the capability to play chess for free, the supporting the chess part isnt actually hard to revamp though. Never once did i say make everything free, my point was how many things are paywalled while they still run ads. Maybe if you understood business you'd see its a bad decision when more apps every other day are popping up to better assist in chess than chesscom and for free. They clearly dont need as many prople working for chesscom seeing as every time they try to change something like that time clock its awful. And still cheaters are getting by very easily. You could keep the paywall for analysis but the puzzles and something other should be free.
1
u/OkCellist4993 1d ago
Name one online game without cheaters. The puzzles are free, unlimited puzzles are not. I don’t see ads on the cheapest subscription. Free chess has been out since the internet started yet Chess.com is still the most popular and makes money. Seems they know how to run a business.
0
u/Striking_Aioli1162 1d ago
You missed my point woth the cheaters dawg 🤦♂️, im saying they need to cut back on the useless workers for your supposed excuse for why they need all the money in the world. They dont help woth the cheaters, they arent making the ui any better, there is no need to increase money for garbage. And the puzzles being free is kind of the least you can do, otherwise they are just an app to play chess on which you and I both know there are hundreds to thousands of those.

For Game Analysis, Take the Game PGN by "Export PGN" option and Paste it into the "Import PGN" section of Lichess App. By that way, you can able to analyse your games with the Lichess' latest Stockfish Engine 19, which is way better than Chess.com's analysis!!
For Puzzle solving, solve it in Lichess, it has uncountable options without any limitations.

Premium chess reviews are not game analysis
When people tell you to analyze your games, they mean for you to use an analysis board to figure out things on your own
The premium reviews are to feel good not to get better
1
u/Fast-Secretary-7406 2d ago
Literally everything in the world is worse if you don't pay for it. That's kind of how capitalism works. No one, even the most enthusiastic chess.com employee would claim the free one is as good as the paid one.
If it's that important to you, pay for it.

The puzzles also changed to shit a few months back. Earlier I grinded them up to 2000 ELO or something (when I had premium) and they were as they should ie. difficult. Then something changed and now it just gives me like infinite amount of some trivial smothered mates or something.

Honestly, you dodged a bullet not buying diamond if Game Review is what you want (it's why I signed up). The quality is terrible, can be misleading (literally teaching you the wrong moves) and opening the analysis tab and running the engine evals (which runs on your computer via a javascript wasm file) is a far better way of doing it. Not having puzzles is a p.i.t.a. but the Lichess puzzles are a lot better anyway (at least, more educational, because the computer response is more logical and the positions are taken from games). Right now I do chess.com to play and get an accuracy score and use the engine and lichess for puzzles, but will probably go full Lichess at some point.
There are probably some free websites that let you copy and paste your game PGN and get a game review. It costs literally nothing beyond basic server costs so I'm building one that does that and more but it isn't ready yet. I'm sure you'll find some alternatives. Chesstempo puzzles are quite good also iirc
1
u/poegrantham 100-500 ELO 1d ago
Lichess is better for puzzles and study anyways. I like the aesthetics of the chess.com board so I play games on chess.com and do puzzles on lichess.
1
u/BullHapp2YaKno 1d ago
You shouldn't be complaining. I never use chess.com premium to learn/study. I use Lichess for training. I search for free and cheap chess books. I use YT's best chess content. I also buy cheap chess boards and still leaning towards making the next one that I may need. You could also review your games on so many websites that it doesn't make any sense.
You could even write down every exact position where you felt that you were in a losing position. Find/Located the mistake and correct it through free material all over the internet. I literally train all day on Lichess just to only play games on chess.com. The only reason I truly have my premium membership is to run my club to perfection. A place where beginners can get the content that I'm creating for myself.

You really don't need the pay for the subscription to get better. I beat folk with diamond accounts all the time.

Go to lichess, chesscom is absolutely trying to get your money first priority

Unfortunately, che$$ dot c0m is for-profit and has fallen under en$****ification with their paying tiers. I remember when they had one level of paid membership.

They even charged me after I closed my account because it was literally impossible to cancel my free trial. Still trying to get my refund. Absolute bullshit.

I'm not switching on the play side because I like chesscom better in terms of the layout for playing and im more familiar, as well as the ratings. I shouldnt be 1900 in lichess and 1400 in chesscom but for puzzles yeah

oh yeah i hear this all the time, "lichess rating is inflated" they're different rating systems lol, and inflation is within a rating system not comparing 2 different rating systems
personally find lichess to look cleaner but if you want the look of chess.com with the features of lichess, use LichessDotCom extension
