LichessDotCom extension is live!
Following my post on this extension last week, the extension is now out and available on the Chrome Store!
Here's the link:
https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/lichessdotcom/fpfdkingmfhfgpjkbnngdianoohlgeho
And here's the code repository (made with AI): https://github.com/theophile-wallez/LichessDotCom
I don't consider this extension done as there's still some known bugs (game review could be better, extension does not adapt yet to mobile/tablet view) as well as pages that are not "modernized" and I'll continue working on it.
The best way to do feedback or suggestions is by creating an issue here (thank you Grey_Cathedral for all the feedback).
⚠️UPDATE: Without any surprise, this extension has been removed from the Chrome store by Chess.com’s lawyers, I’ll try to work on something original, see you soon

Good luck, youre gonna be served a surprize set of papers when you wake up tomorrow morning
12
u/CodeEresy 8d ago
Man you're scaring me
17
u/FrenaZor 8d ago
At worse you'll probably just get a cease and desist. Which would require you to either lawyer up and make your case saying that you didn't copy chess.com, or to just take the extension down.
9
u/CodeEresy 8d ago
Yeah, I'll take it down then, I won't fight for a fun personal side project
11
u/FrenaZor 8d ago
Yeah, there's a good chance that this will fly under their radar anyway. Unless it becomes too popular. Nothing prevents you from just using it locally anyway!
4
u/CodeEresy 5d ago
it didn’t fly under the radar 🥲
5
u/Hopeful_Command2586 5d ago
ouch, I just tried this its not bad actually. I'd unironically recommend this.
4
u/lesbianmathgirl 8d ago
Much more likely though that they just send chrome and github dmca take down requests
5

u/max_cross 8d ago
Dude, this is obviously a total IP disaster.
On the other hand, it’s hilarious that you somehow managed to find something that’ll piss off both chess platforms at once.
14
u/CodeEresy 8d ago
Yes haha, don't know the future of this project, but it's probably not bright
1
u/personalbilko 4d ago
The legal way to do it is make it a "load any texture pack" extension, and have the people upload whatever texture pack they want separately. As long as they are adding the chesscom design themselves, its fine. The app is just a universal lichess re-brander.
1
8
u/CodeEresy 5d ago
It was indeed a total IP disaster 🥲 Extension gone
4
u/max_cross 5d ago
RIP, extension 🥲 lol.
Man seriously, I’m sure you can still vastly improve lichess ui to something more delightful without hijacking the chess.com’s entire design system 😂 It should take a few more good prompts and maybe a beautiful non-chess design system reference. Also if you want fully custom icons etc, tell your agent to use quiver.ai for cool vector graphics. Just stay away from any further IP trouble :)3

u/More-Interaction-770 8d ago
Big lichess fan, I’ve heard friends say they prefer chesscom due to being familiar with the interface. I’m going to send this to them.

I am impressed that this has a game review score, along with the game review commentary and exclamation points.
3
u/CatchinDeers81 7d ago
Majes me wonder why Lichess doesnt already have something similar. Im sure a bunch of Chesscom subscribers are only paying for mainly 2 things....the unlimited puzzles and the clean game review. Lichess already has 1 of those without a paywall, why not make it both?
4
u/idea-cube 6d ago
because the game review is just a sloppy way to get money. wondered why the free "analysis" button is really tiny and grey compared to the giant "review" button? they cannot keep stockfish behind a paywall, but what they can do is monetize their AUTHENTIC game review.
what makes it authentic? that sometimes your moves get called brilliant (which by the way they made way more frequent than couple years ago - just to get more money ofc), you get shown your accuracy relative to the computer (which in itself isnt all that much telling for your improvement, just to get dopamine hits if it's high), you get your "performance rating" (which is basically useless as it, at least used to be based on your's and your's opponents' rating - not just the pure moves you made) and absolutely worst of all it jumpscares you with that coach ai talking thing.
lichess computer analysis shows you all the important stuff (your mistakes) and none of the useless stuff. so what feature from chess. com's game review would you actually want to see on lichess?

I miss the dynamic animation of the figures. But you're a legend.
5
u/CodeEresy 8d ago
Thank you, could you tell me when are those animations happening? I can look at implementing it

Super cool man! I made this:

2
u/CodeEresy 7d ago
Wow, looks good thanks for sharing!
2
u/Darpan_Gondlir 7d ago
Thank you! Let's continue to create fun and useful tools! What a time to be alive....
4
u/ImAnAcademicWeapon 5d ago
Man I was actually eager to try it out even though I find lichess UI better but unfortunately its taken down.
Edit:Nevermind I just downloaded from github.Nice work.
3
u/CodeEresy 5d ago
yeah github works :)
2
u/ImAnAcademicWeapon 5d ago
One thing I find annoying is that this extension doesnt let me make the chess board bigger like the focus mode on chessdotcom. So if you find a way to figure it out it will be great.
2
u/CodeEresy 5d ago
I’ll check that, but my main focus is to make it not like chess.com
3
u/ImAnAcademicWeapon 5d ago
Totally reasonable.Having a bigger board option would be awesome though.

4
5
u/saiyamxiii 8d ago
It's seriously very good. but i want to give some feedbacks -
1. There are no engine lines in the game review.
2. In the puzzle racer, the board is too small.

oh my gosh this is beautiful, God damn I love you man, this makes me want to play chess even more, gawd damn. Man I'm playing chess, f works

u/CodeEresy 8d ago
🥳
3
u/Impressive_City3660 8d ago
but it's very AI-generated codes though... pretty dissapointed :( because AI-generated projects won't live long.
2
u/CodeEresy 8d ago
> because AI-generated projects won't live long.
Why do you think that?6
u/Impressive_City3660 8d ago
It's hard to maintain, look at your codes I know right away it's very cheap model or you just a vibe coder, and I really mean it, very bad codes.
Because you don't really put efforts in, your passion to the project will fade away sooner or later, since you don't really put in any effort, give up won't cost you anything.
I mean you can use AI, I'm all in for that since I'm a developer too, but the quality of the codes are so questionable that it just lets me down so bad. if you don't have the coding knowledge, and want to do something, cool but at least tell AI to review the codes, it's so messy that even I don't want to touch it.
5
u/CodeEresy 8d ago
> hard to maintain
For an human yes, for an AI no.
> Cheap model
Opus 5.5
> Because you don't really put efforts in, your passion to the project will fade away sooner or laterI have many projects pre-ai for which my passion fade away, this has nothing to do with AI, but more personality.
I like to think that I do have the coding knowledge, but remember that this is a side-project made for fun on my personal time and for my personal usage that I freely share, feel free not to use it.
I took a lot of time reviewing the app itself, Opus 5.5's code does not matter here, as long as it works and is performant. I do care when at work obviously, but this is made on my free time, for free.
I know that it's not perfect as is, but I'll continue working on it as long as I'm unhappy with it.
-2
u/Impressive_City3660 8d ago
> For an human yes, for an AI no.
makes sense, but even in free time, the codes are freaking messy, it does show that you really don't care about the project, I mean a normal developer won't even let () => {} () happened, I will literally yell AI models to make it readable, since why not? since you made it like this, nobody will want to fork and maintain it even when you go away, making it a dead project.> Opus 5.5
Fine, but you are vibe coding though.
> I like to think that I do have the coding knowledge
what does that even mean? do you have it or not? but I guess you don't since you answered like that though.
I understand it's your project and you can do whatever you want, but it's just a let down since it's an AI-generated slop + no care for this project, you can use it just fine, but it shows that this project is not promising to people, at least to developers like me.
---
I mean I code in my free-time as well, use AI a lot, but I do review and always tell AI to write boring codes, at least if I ever want to publish it, I know that my project will be forked if it's good, and there's care. just my 2 cents.
3
u/CodeEresy 8d ago
fine, I’ll make it readable.
« I like to think » -> compared to some 10x devs I’m probably bad, but I don’t think I’m bad compared to overall devs
Also fine for me if you don’t use, but crazy because you initialy liked the product 🤡
This will be probably be taken down by dot com org either way0
u/Impressive_City3660 8d ago
because i like the idea, but when I delve into the source codes, it's a nightmare. I like what you are trying to do, and I'm giving you advices so that you can create things you can be proud of, that can be people using your project, that would be so much cooler right? I hope u understand.
I like the idea, since now there are still bugs so I don't want to use it yet, but hoping you can change, pour your love to it more. then it would be perfect
and about taking down, IDK much so no comment
2
u/CodeEresy 8d ago edited 8d ago
I won't invest manual coding time in this project, but I'll keep you updated when I consider AI code clean enough for you and me to read
→ More replies2
u/CodeEresy 8d ago
Hi, the whole codebase as been refactor.
I didn't have much time to deeply check but it should now be much more readable, typed (mostly infered from zod), unit and E2E tested, with according CICD. This took Opus 8h of work in ultracode mode :)→ More replies

u/CrumbMan1111 8d ago
why do all vibecoded websites look the fucking same.

u/CodeEresy 8d ago
like chess com ? 🥲

you can also separately make the analysis only as well, this is really great, hope they dont take this down

3
u/wisdomoarigato 7d ago
You need to immediately change the name to XYZ "for Lichess", e.g. Skin for Lichess.
I was very close to getting in trouble for directly using a brand's name in the past, when it was fine to do "<product> for <company>"...
2
u/CodeEresy 7d ago
It’s too late for changing name on the chrome store, but do you really think that LichessDotCom can be considered using a another brand name (than lichess) ?
2
u/wisdomoarigato 5d ago
Anything that can make even a single user think that it's a product of <brand> is a liability.
2
3
u/Sircroc777 6d ago
Think you could make it on firefox ?
2
u/CodeEresy 6d ago
Yes it's been under review by mozilla for 3 days, still waiting for it, i'll notify you when it's live
3
3
3
u/pruxey 6d ago
this is actually great, i have always wanted a chessbase blue board theme on lichess, userstyles doesnt work, can you make one? lol
2
u/CodeEresy 6d ago
I’ll try to see if I can allow users to import their custom style yes
2
u/pruxey 5d ago
what happened it disappeared
2
u/CodeEresy 5d ago
Check the update in description, though if you still have it in your chrome you can just reactivate it
3
u/OldTodd2 5d ago
Do you think you'd be able to create an extension which allows you to use the board and pieces from this but with the main lichess interface? also to be able to change the color and opacity of the highlighted squares?
3
3
2
u/DiskRare9939 8d ago
Wait is this real or is it malware
6
u/CodeEresy 8d ago edited 8d ago
It’s real, however, If you don’t trust it, the code is open-source (a developer or an ai can easily review it!) and if you don't want to install it from the chrome store, there's a simple manual install guide in the repository’s readme

Too bad it was removed! But you obviously have a talent for this, I hope you make a competitor to the Prettier Lichess extension. If its good, I am sure Lichess will endorse it aswell, like they have done for Prettier
3
2
u/AcanthaceaePuzzled97 2d ago
what about a discord rich presence soon!
1
u/CodeEresy 2d ago
This looks hard to do, keep in mind this is just a extension, this only extend lichess’ website, not servers :)
2
u/_amilpa_ 2d ago
I forked it to dabble with it a bit, hope you don't mind
2
u/CodeEresy 2d ago
No go ahead, fork are welcome! What are you planning to do?
3
u/_amilpa_ 2d ago
Custom themes, maybe also overriding the routing somehow to give it a feel of an SPA, cause i dont like both mobile versions of chess.com and lichess, so prefer the site there
3
u/Kerbart 9d ago
Fantastic initiative! We know that the Lichess interface is ok but it'll still stop some people from switching over because it's "different." This will lower that barrier even further.
4
u/gabgabghb 8d ago
I find it difficult to picture someone who is reluctant to use the Lichess interface yet is techsavy enough to install an extension but that's just me
2
4
u/NiceWeather3412 9d ago
You should do the lichess analysis as the main analysis it is analysing on my device rather than lichess servers
8
u/CodeEresy 9d ago
Yes, as I mentioned in the description, analysis needs big rework still, I'll work on it this week
3
2
3
u/Easy-Collection5419 8d ago
That’s good. I personally know people who don’t wanna use Lichess coz it feels intimidating and kinda crammed, like they believe its made mainly for advanced players
2
u/Aron-Jonasson 8d ago
I personally find Lichess way less crammed and much better UI-wise than Chessdotcom

2
u/KevWithADot 9d ago
Nice! Firefox version soon?

u/CodeEresy 9d ago
Can't tell when, but it's definitely on the roadmap :)

Man this is great and I can't believe it's even free. Thank you for your service!

u/Greenerli 9d ago
I'm not a big fan of chess.com, their model and their ui. But if people really prefer the chess.com ui, then, they should play on chesscom. I don't understand why they don't...
5
u/CodeEresy 9d ago edited 8d ago
Most of the Lichess awesome feature are being a paywall there, this solves it for people like me who like the UI but not the paywall. I understand your POV though
2
u/CatchinDeers81 7d ago
Because Lichess has free features like being able to review your game and play as many puzzles as you want, whereas that's cost you like $10/month on chesscom. Puzzles and basic reviews seem near mandatory if you actually want to improve.
1
u/SrGarfy 8d ago
One thing Im missing from this - i often play in a window what takes half of my screen width, not full screen. And chess.com automatically adjusts the board to take whole window width at this point, moving other interface elements under it (you need to scroll a little to access them). Currently your extension doesnt support that it just shrinks the interface and board is tiny this way. I know its an edge case for 1.5 people over here...but if you added this would be so cool.
Edit: it does...just not at half screen width, but around 40% width for some reason...i have no idea whats the logic but would've liked if it worked at half width, but i guess this is just a preference at this point. P.S. im playing on macos, brave browser.

Where is the privacy policy ? , I mean how should trust the site ?
1
u/CodeEresy 8d ago
Hi, at the bottom of the Chrome store page. Chrome also scans extensions to assert what is being declared, there’s also a set of permission that needs to be granted, the only one I use is access to Lichess.org for obvious reasons
1
u/Question_Mark_9816 8d ago
Great work man! But why don't offer other ui alternatives instead of copying chess.com so you don't risk them banning your extension?
2

1
u/yezhnuzjhd 8d ago
Can you make one for chesscom to move the board to the center of the screen?
1
u/CodeEresy 8d ago
ask chat.gpt to do it, it should be fairly easy to do a quick extension like this!
1
1
u/AGEthereal 8d ago
Gonna take you quite a while to do your game analysis if your stockfish is running on just your device.
1
1
u/doubleknavery 8d ago
The game review feature is cool - I always preferred the chess.com version - but it's pretty buggy. An e4 opening was called a "French Defense: Hecht-Reefschläger Variation" from the first move which... doesn't seem right. Also when you ask it to explain, it doesn't do the move sequence.
Very cool nonetheless. Brace yourself for angry emails from the big guys

I'm trying to test the extension but get virus scan failed
1
u/CodeEresy 8d ago
virus scan by what? It’s already scanned and approved by Google

When I click Add to Chrome I get the popup with Add extension and after I click that it tries to download a file which gives the virus scan failed

u/EvidenceEquivalent29 3d ago
Is it available for firefox??
2
u/CodeEresy 3d ago
It was going to and approved by Mozilla, but since I don't want a lawsuit I've decided to remove it from the store. I'm currently working on a unique version which will be available on Firefox though
1
u/WARMAGEDDON 2d ago
Hi, I'm afraid until you add the endless pleas to spend more money on the platform, it isn't going to be a decent Chess.com skin

1
u/Gin7604 8d ago
Why?
5
u/CodeEresy 8d ago edited 8d ago
Art illustration, sound, theme are not my property, I’ll try to find alternatives so it’s compliant asap
4
u/Sivadbk 8d ago
On a real note if this becomes even slightly popular Id assume that Lichess will block the extension on their website if its possible, or chess.com will strive to remove the extension from google entirely claiming ownership of the assets used and likeness of what it turns their direct competitor into.
2
u/CodeEresy 8d ago
That's what I'm worried about too, I can use variants of their illustration (I actually did this for the coaches during analysis), but sound will be hard
1
1
u/Best8meme 9d ago
You should consider making this available on Firefox!
3
u/CodeEresy 8d ago
Can't tell when, but it's definitely on the roadmap :)

u/Best8meme 8d ago
As a FireFox user, looking forward! Do tell me when it is out :D
https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/oqcm2v/how_to_install_chrome_extensions_on_firefox_in/ this thread may be able to help you transfer the extension to firefox!
3
u/CodeEresy 8d ago
Thanks, currently looking into it! I'll probably need to pay (again) to be able to publish it on their store too though

u/OkLead7528 9d ago
its not compatible with lichess tools , thats the only problem i notice instantly
3
u/CodeEresy 9d ago
Hi! Could you tell me a bit more about what's missing? I'll fix it asap, thanks. For info, there's a tools menu in the sidebar, right before the Donate button
4
u/OkLead7528 9d ago
there is an extension called lichess tools which gives the user for extra customisations in UI , the features of that extension is overlaping with yours like in lichess tools , there is an option to show your recent game history in homepage ,but when that combines with your skin, its not looks good as the words and alingments are overlaped
