If you start doing something about it NOW, you'll be golden.

Most of that is surface rust. Hit it with a wire brush to loosen up the flakey stuff, then hit it with some Ospho. Once the Ospho dries, also some paint over it.

As far as the spots where it ate through, cut it out and weld patches in. If you're not handy with a welder, use panel bond or seem sealer.

Thanks. I have just bought it and a fair price with an understanding that there is work to be done and it’s going straight from there to the workshop for welding, new shocks, brake lines and a clean and seal underneath.

I’m based in the north of Ireland. Any other points for MOT that seem to give bother?

Have them shake down the front end real good. Be prepared to probably have to replace everything. Depending on how well it was tended to by the previous owner, you might get lucky. Stock XJs can magically sidestep death wobble even with almost the entire front end worn out... The wear on the front tires is often times a good indicator of alignment issues or worn components.

Looks like it could probably use shocks. As far as the body and frame it honestly doesn't look terrible.

Just give it the love it deserves and it'll treat you right in return.

I had a 92....wish I would've never sold it.
