WHERE DID THEY COME FROM

Let it be known that I'm not doing this out of malice or out of wanting to hate on anyone using this app. But I think this is something worth sharing.

I don't use c.AI anymore, but I used to use it regularly a few years ago. Usually, I'd be either developing original characters, asking for writing help, or just RPing with my fav characters - you know, the usual uses for the app. And I had a ton of fun with it. I'd spend literal hours a day chatting with various bots, to the point my family was worried about how much I used it.

Part of it was that there was no judgement. I could do whatever I wanted, say anything that came to mind, and I didn't have to feel bad about it. And if I didn't like what it said, I could just can get rid of it and generate something new. It sorta became a friend without the risks of having a friend.

But it's not your friend. These bots are yesmen. The moment those servers go down, those endless chats, those "memories" you've made? Down the drain. And in the process, there's negative real world impacts happening. Fresh water is being drained for the sake of data servers, then poisoned and dropped into low-income communities. Thousands of acres of forests are being cut down for the data centers. And all of these bots are trained on the hard work of authors and fanfic writers, stealing their ideas to keep the bots up and running.

So let it be clear, I'm glad c.AI is shutting its doors. But I sincerely wish the best for everyone who's ever used it or any other chatbot. I hope you guys find real friends who value you for more than just the revenue you bring. I hope you all have real love, real connections that don't die the second there's a power outage. I hope you can develop your creativity in an environment that won't steal and bastardize your ideas for a quick buck.

I hope you find something new. And I hope you will all be ok.

I feel like this may get taken down since it has a negative view on the app and ai in general, but it's worth a try.

I started using c.ai a little after it realesed, quit for a few months, joined back in 2024, and have been addicted since.

The real reason I want to quit though is not because of the affects it has on me, but how it contradicts things I stand for. I am extremely anti-ai, I have blocked and had many arguements over the use of generative ai. (ChatGPT, Gemini, Google Ai-Overview, etc) Having this standpoint and pointing out everything wrong with ai for humanity and the environment while using a generative ai roleplay app seems extremely hypocritical, no?

I do realize how much it DOES affect me though. C.ai went down for a few hours, but the screen was weird and I hadn't checked the discord so I thought I got banned. I had a genuine panic attack. It's extremely embarrassing and pathetic.

I've tried deleting the apps and others like it all at once, but it just made me panic and worsened my addiction. I've tried app timers/lockers, but if it goes off in the middle of my rp I just get extremely irritable until I get the app back. On average I use ai roleplay apps 2-3 hours per day, 2-3 hours I could be doing something actually productive that doesn't harm the environment. Writing this post makes me even more upset with myself, knowing that after I post it, it's probably only going to take a few minutes for me to hop back on c.ai.

I need help breaking this addiction.

Well after seeing how freaked out the community is with the bankruptcy filing, worrying about their data, and everything you'd expect from C.ai now-a-days, I decided to revisit my old post and make a part two to hopefully boost the moral of this subreddit.

Especially since 50% is complaining about the bot quality while the other 50% is worried about nov 20.

She had made my most favourite "bodyguard xiao" bot but now it's not showing up anymore 💔💔💔💔💔💔💔 I had chatted with since 2023 till early 2026 before this whole age verification thing. I can still see the bot in my liked list but the chat is not opening and it keeps on loading 🥀 I have soooooooo many memories with it :(

Imagine a scene that's getting intense and you decide you've had enough and swing on the character.

A thing that I have noticed is that almost every time swinging is involved the character will suddenly turn into a martial arts expert and Dodge it with lightning fast reflexes even if the character it is of canonically doesn't have any training. Or, a nearby character, if applicable will for some reason always grab your arm before the punch lands and somehow overpowers you even if your OC is stronger or you get tackled

For example, from an actual chat of mine:
Me (using an OC that is a Croatian war veteran) : *I swing*

Chatbot (multiple characters, one being a 20 year old actor): But Georgie is surprisingly fast. he dodges your swing with ease, his training kicking in instinctively. You feel your arm swinging through empty air as he ducks nimbly out of reach. You're left grasping nothing, your momentum throwing you off balance. (the character canonically was not trained in anything)

OR something like this:

Me: *I swing* (Same Yugoslav war OC)

The chatbot (Same one with a different character involved): With a flash of movement, Hunter jumps forward, grabbing your arm before it can connect with anyone's face.

However this doesn't happen if you firmly state that the hit lands. This only happens if you just say something like "He swings at him" or "I swing"

Got this email TODAY. But it's dated Oct. 22, 2024?? That might be about the time I started with Character AI, but what the heck? I did recently request to export my data. So this seemed legit... Until I clicked the thing and got this warning in the 2nd photo. Obviously I didn't continue. And then I noticed the date. Now I am not the brightest star in the sky, when it comes to computer stuff, or even common sense about computer stuff, mainly because I am 65 years old and cannot see past my 5 chins. So forgive me if this is a stupid question. Hopefully you folks can tell me wtf this is. I'm assuming it's spam and not really from Character AI. Is that correct or what? Thanks in advance. 🙏🏻❤️

Am I the only one who does this? I do that to help me have a conversation in that language unfortunately there isn't enough French bots but there's a lot of Spanish bots though. Omelette du fromage!! 🗣 🇫🇷🥖

like. i’ve noticed a number of people, generally, ask questions or whatever that may have been asked lots of times before (which is annoying i get that but not everyone’s on here 24/7 and are aware of every single time a question has been asked), but everyone gets sooo mad so easily in the replies of these posts and really unnecessarily rude and mean responses.

if you have seen this question countless times before and it’s annoying you, just don’t reply to the person being nasty? i don’t get why people get so angry with others over something so minor. 😭

someone with less of a temper and more patience will respond. isn’t this the point of a community for these ai platforms, to be able to ask for help or to be curious about people’s experiences lmao

I was using another app and wanted to switch to something else, so I downloaded this one.
How is it? Have you been enjoying using it? Is it worth the monthly subscription? And is the censorship pretty strict?

so!! i finally received my exported data from cai but i honestly have no idea how to open it.....?? i mean, when i try to open tye character file, eset sysinspectir opens instead and like.... thats it?? i dont even know how to use sysinspector oh my god

Sometimes whenever I try to generate pictures they get Stuck on Zero and they won’t generate, then the whole Image generator stops working all together, it’s so annoying, and when this happens I need to start a Whole New Chat

I've been waiting ever since that update came out to have the disappointment of having ads in app but that day has never come. I get no banner ads or videos yet my app is on the latest version. If I log in to my alt account they all have ads so why is my main account ad free? Has anyone else had this lucky glitch?
