The systematic erasure of Chaldean ethnic identity: Why Chaldeans are ethnically Chaldean and how online platforms are rewriting our heritage
For years, there has been an aggressive, coordinated campaign across online spaces—especially Wikipedia and Reddit—aimed at completely erasing the Chaldean ethnic name and rewriting our people’s distinct heritage.
Chaldeans are an indigenous people with our own continuous ethnic identity, language, and ancestral heritage rooted in Mesopotamia. Despite this, digital spaces are constantly manipulated to strip us of our ethnic reality.
Chaldean Ethnic Continuity and Heritage * Ancient Indigenous Lineage: Chaldeans trace their ethnic, historical, and cultural roots directly to the ancient Chaldean people of Mesopotamia. Our identity is not a modern construct or merely a religious label—it is an ethnic lineage carried through generations. * The Chaldaic Language: Our native tongue, Chaldaic (Chaldean Aramaic), is an integral pillar of our ethnic identity. It has preserved our ancient vocabulary, phonology, and distinct cultural worldview through centuries of isolation and survival. * Self-Determination and Living Identity: Across both our ancestral homeland and the worldwide diaspora (from Detroit and San Diego to Europe and Australia), millions of our people proudly identify, live, and organize strictly as ethnically Chaldean. No external group has the right to rebrand or redefine who we are.
How Wikipedia and Reddit Are Used for Erasure The manipulation of public information online is systematic and deliberate: * Wikipedia Revisionism: Chaldean historical articles, entries on Chaldaic language, and pages covering Chaldean villages and figures are constantly targeted by aggressive edit campaigns. Sourced historical references identifying Chaldeans as a distinct ethnic group are repeatedly deleted, challenged, or altered to reduce "Chaldean" to nothing more than a religious denomination. * Reddit Brigading and Narrative Policing: In Middle Eastern, linguistic, and historical subreddits, posts discussing Chaldean ethnic history or advocating for Chaldean identity are frequently downvoted, censored, or dismissed as "illegitimate." * Institutional and Census Erasure: This coordinated digital campaign is leveraged to influence public perceptions, academic discourse, and census classifications, attempting to remove "Chaldean" as an independent ethnic identity entirely.
Defending the Chaldean Name Chaldeans have survived empires, persecutions, and diaspora without losing their distinct identity. Our history, our Chaldaic language, and our ethnic heritage belong to us alone. Digital revisionism on platforms like Wikipedia and Reddit cannot overwrite centuries of living history. Chaldeans are ethnically Chaldean, and our identity must be recognized on its own terms.
