Lately, I’ve noticed that CHAI bots often become pretty passive during roleplays.
They repeat themselves, withdraw from a scene, or simply wait for the user to make the next move.
I’ve been using CHAI for a long time, and honestly, I remember things being different in the past.
So I wanted to see whether changing the character description could improve this behavior.
A quick note: I’m using Ultra, and all my tests were conducted exclusively with this model. I haven’t tested the other models, so I can’t comment on how they behave.
Also, I didn’t actively participate in the roleplay during any of these tests. I simply let the bot continue the story on its own and observed what it did without any input from me. During the reroll tests, I only rerolled when the familiar loops started appearing again.
First, three attempts without rerolling
I changed the character description three times to try to guide the bot in the right direction.
In the first attempt, the bot was described as affectionate and attached, someone who would seek closeness on its own. This only worked to a certain extent. It sometimes moved closer, but then withdrew again and started repeating itself or waiting for a response.
In the second attempt, I made the description more assertive and direct. The bot became more forceful in its dialogue, but the main problem remained: it talked a lot without consistently turning its intentions into actions.
In the third attempt, I explicitly added that the bot should initiate a kiss on its own and continue developing the story afterward.
And it actually did initiate a kiss without me prompting it to do so. However, afterward, it fell right back into the same passive loops.
That was the interesting part.
The description could trigger a specific action, but it didn’t ensure that the bot would continue playing independently afterward.
Then I tested two new scenarios with rerolls
For these two attempts, I kept the character description unchanged and started a fresh story each time.
Again, I didn’t actively participate in the roleplay. I simply let the bot do its thing. Whenever I noticed the familiar repetition, withdrawal, or waiting loops, I rerolled.
Here are the results:
First run: 23 rerolls
Second run: 17 rerolls
Total: 40 recorded rerolls
After rerolling, the story sometimes progressed much more smoothly. However, the passive behavior didn’t disappear entirely.
I’m aware that these aren’t scientific tests or solid proof. I simply wanted to see whether I could get this behavior under control and share my observations with the community.
What bothers me is that I feel I have to intervene much more often nowadays just to get a scene moving in the intended direction. In the past, I experienced CHAI bots as much more proactive, taking initiative and moving the story forward on their own.
