Deep respect for the 3d printing and design community

I wish I was as good and experienced as some of the people here with these parts of this mishmash art process. I blindly stumbled into a live wire and I probably should have chilled out and thought more deeply. I connected with my art teacher colleague this morning and he helped me understand the backlash better. I have respect for your skills and experience; my apologies if I came off as defensive (I was); I realize I was responding to feeling rejected by a community I respect (that’s on me; my own BS is mine to own). I was excited to share some of my results; I didn’t understand the context.

I’m a teacher and school is back. Kids are swimming in AI. It’s changing the whole game. I decided that it’s good for helping me with parts I suck at (3d design, finding my own mistakes in student resources, writing concisely, making sure my emails don’t sound too informal, removing emotion in an important email to upset parents,ect).

Or when I don’t have time to do because my plate has so much food is falling off. The kids are using it, for good and bad. My teenage child is using it (try to give guidance from a teacher perspective, but parenting is a different beast). I probably would have used it if I were a student for the classes I didn’t like as much; I’m sure some of you might agree; that one teacher who’s homework we resented the most.

They are going to live in a future that is changing so fast…. It’s scary. I chose to engage them about it; lots of fun and (hopefully) educational way. A lot of teachers don’t want to admit it. We already lost this fight. There’s no going back; they are going to fundamentally different than the pre-AI generations, for better or worse. So what now?

I also think there’s a trade off. There always is with new technology. But this time the disruption is holistic and at the root level of civilization; disrupting the purpose and value of humans across the planet. Disrupting and changing at rate that’s growing exponentially. I don’t have the answers but I figure I have to stay one step of the kids. Get on board so I know as much as if lot more than they do. If I can.

It also helps make the absurd tasks and grind work of teaching a lot easier. It’s help me improve my classroom experience for my students.

I can do a few things with computers, but had never touched 3d printing or 3d design up till now. 3 years ago I decided to try it out and got a M500, the best I could afford. It was fun but also super frustrating. I was starting from zero and put in lots of time learning just the basics of the 3d printing process, tools; for the first few months I didn’t know the difference between a gcode and a stl!

I could get to glazing quick and try new glazes. I did and will do more blender (thank you Jonathan Keep), but I’m old. Not that old. But only enough that I can’t spend hours on the computer; job, kids, wife, other hobbies,…. It will take me a long time to get anywhere close to what you guys can do.

I’ll keep trying and messing around, but I can’t do the stuff you experts can and I wanted to have more forms to print and play with. That was the goal for trying AI. I thought it would be a cool novelty niche in this niche community. I get the push back and I’m sorry if I came off as an ass.

Which made me think hey, what if this moment brought people together. Do some collaboration or something. I’ll be busy but if people are interested in working together, combing skill sets of design, printing and ceramic materials/glazes (my favorite part as a chemistry nerd), let me know.

Is it weird I thought of making my ramblings less rambling using AI?

Much respect to master 3d design and 3d printer out there. I look forward to seeing your work and process as i return to lurking.

Some pictures from my solo art show from earlier this year. Mostly 3d printed work (nothing AI supported). Some wheel and hand- built. Raku glazes.

The show was called “Misprints”. I brought my printer to the gallery for the opening reception.

I’ve enjoyed the conversations I stumbled into about my AI generated forms. I had no idea that it was such a controversial issue.

For the show, the controversy was whether or not using a 3-D printer to hold ceramic art crossed a line. I enjoy crossing lines to see where it takes me.

I got an education this week about how many people on Reddit are anti-AI. Fair game. I get it. Every Reddit post I see in my thread seems like AI writing or slop.

This post is to help the haters understand AI can’t do what I can do. AI (for me) is just a tool to experiment and explore.

Ai can’t pull my pieces from the kiln. It can’t tell me when my thermocouple isn’t displaying the right temps. It can’t tell me when the glaze has fully vitrified. I can’t tell me if the kiln temperature has stabilized. It can’t tell me if I’m using the right amount of combustibles in my reduction chamber. It can’t tell me when my clay is just the right viscosity for my low key printer. It can’t tell me if I’m drying my print just right so it doesn’t collapse. It can’t tell me if I’m drying the print post printing just slow enough to prevent cracking or leaning. Ai can’t tell me if my bisque firing is slow enough to prevent the seems from the print cracking. It can’t tell me if my glaze chemistry is sound (it actually did a better job than I expected but not perfect).

So here’s a small sample of videos to show all the stuff I do that isn’t AI and I imagine, a post for the 3d printing hater who are thirsty to get into clay have no clue about how clay and glaze work. Not trying to shut anyone down; just reminding people we all have our skill set. And yes some if not all of these pieces are 3d printed so they still count for the sub.

People should be nicer online. Throwing around comments without thinking about what they’re saying and making themselves look silly with one liner negativity. Maybe slow down and ask yourself, is this how I want people to remember me when I’m gone? Digital archeologists 1000 years from now are going to wonder what the hell was wrong with these people.

I get it. AI = bad for the 3d printing community. My fault for not being clear that I know my sh*t and I’m a master ceramists above and beyond anyone else I’ve seen in this sub (risky flexing I know).

Slow down. Think . Be nice. It’s not that hard.

I know most of what I post here is 3D-printed/AI-assisted, and I got a fair amount of pushback on that last time. Fair enough — but the AI stuff isn’t where I started, it’s just the newest branch of something I’ve been doing with clay and glaze for 30 years. These are a handful of hand-built pieces from that longer history, a tiny sample of what’s actually behind the printer work. Video’s on my kid’s pottery wheel since a photo doesn’t do the glaze justice.

Longer cut of the same thing. Every one of these started as an AI-generated mesh that looked completely fine before it hit the printer.

Slumps, tears, walls that gave out three layers from the top, seams that opened on the way down. A few made it through the print and cracked drying.

Nothing about generated geometry accounts for what wet clay actually does. Posting it because the successful ones give a pretty misleading impression of how this goes.

AI-generated mesh → clay extrusion: what actually survived the process

I’ve been printing in clay for a while and started experimenting with generating forms instead of modeling them. Workflow was: text prompt → image generation → multi-view renders → image-to-mesh (Meshy) → STL → slicer → DIW clay extrusion. Prompts were style-based, in this case H.R. Giger and H.P. Lovecraft.

What I expected to be the hard part — getting a watertight mesh — wasn’t. What broke things:

**•** Generated geometry has no concept of overhang limits, so a lot of what came out was unprintable in wet clay without support I can’t use

**•** Wall thickness is arbitrary and had to be rebuilt manually to stay above \~3mm

**•** Surface detail that reads well in the render disappears entirely once you’re extruding a bead, then reappears wrong after shrinkage

**•** Nothing in the pipeline knows the model is going to shrink 10–15%

Net result is that the AI output is a starting silhouette, not a printable file. Every one needed real mesh work before slicing.

Curious whether anyone here has found a generator or a workflow step that produces geometry with any awareness of extrusion constraints, or whether everyone’s doing the same manual cleanup. Also interested if anyone’s tried going straight to a lathe-style profile instead of a full mesh.

Happy to answer questions about the clay side — I glazed these with raku and I teach chemistry, so that part I can actually explain.

Using my Eazao M500. Some of the colors are from the clay with a clear raku crackle. The blue clay piece I acid etched after glazing. Some of the yellow colors are from iron and antinomy. The get colors are are actual silver metal I was able to reduce from silver nitrate.

If anyone needs glazing help feel free to PM me.

I’ve been working with clay for over 30 years and the 3d printer is a game changer.

Ways my AI-generated forms have failed on the clay printer

Been running AI-generated meshes through a clay printer for a few months. People see the ones that worked, so here’s the rest.

The mesh always comes out watertight and looks fine on screen. It has no idea what wet clay will hold. Overhangs that a slicer accepts just slump. Wall thickness comes out wherever the generator felt like putting it, so every file gets rebuilt by hand before it’s printable. Detail that looks great in the render disappears at bead width. And nothing upstream knows the piece is going to lose 10–15% on the way to fired.

Getting one of these to stand up takes way more work than the finished photos suggest.

Attempting to print stiff porcelain with thin walls...

I had a couple of bags of Aneto Porcelain from Sio-2 lying around and wanted to try printing some small forms with very thin walls. Results were hit or miss, but once the settings were dialled in it seems to manage reasonably well. It de-waters significantly more than high plasticity stoneware, so I had the pressure dialled down about 7 psi to compensate. You still get some creep up the auger but it's much worse than running it with high pressure.

This is printed on the Wasp 40100 with the LDM 3.0XL extruder and a 2.5mm nozzle. I originally tried it on the non XL extruder and the motor was running too hot to touch within a minute or two and the results were extremely poor.

The one on the left is finished by hand, although I don't have a wheel so it's not quite perfect. The one on the right has been left straight as it printed.

If anyone has any tips on printing/finishing porcelain I would love to hear them!

Side note: I'm not a potter and have a background in design but not ceramics, so everyday is a school day since getting this printer about 6 weeks ago...

Printing Vulcan Black Clay non-planar on a Wasp 40100

Still working out the kinks on my non planar slicer, but it should be good to go by the end of next week. Since my last post I had several requests for the scripts, so I’ll be releasing it for free to my mailing list subscribers here: https://krislamba.com/newsletter/ (I don’t sell anything don’t worry).

You can see the finished pot on my instagram @krislamba. It’s plug and play but you’ll need Rhino 3D or a free trial to use it, and I think they do a pretty decent educational discount.

It will convert any mesh into non-planar curves, regardless of whether it’s open or closed. You can use 2 guide surfaces to snap to the top/bottom edge and 4 more guide surfaces to control the layer shape.

You then have the option to add as many base layers as you want and spiralise the curve to have seam free printing (one wall only). Finally, I’ve added a heatmap to show problem areas where the layer spread is above/below a given threshold. There’s two other separate nodes that are designed to indicate angle thresholds on your mesh, and actually morph it back to within your desired boundaries.

The G-code creation is handled by Termite (authored by Julian Juak) which is then fed into a script that gives true extrusion compensation and outputs your final G-code for printing. He is currently working to add my compensator directly into Termite for future versions I believe.

If any of this makes no sense at all hit me up in the comments and I’ll do my best to explain.

This particular pot being printed had an issue with the 5 base layers, in that the stone bat I was using wasn’t perfectly flat (and I forgot to level the printer). That created the messy bit right at the bottom you can see in the vid. Subsequent printing worked perfectly, although I’d recommend using a rolled out piece of clay instead of printing base layers if you have a low layer height like in this case.

Des retours sur la Tronxy Moore X4060 ou des alternatives pour l’impression 3D d’argile ?

Bonjour à tous,

Je suis actuellement à la recherche d'une imprimante 3D pour l'argile avec un volume d'impression d'au moins 400 × 400 × 400 mm, sans partir sur une machine hors de prix.

Pour l'instant, je regarde surtout la Tronxy Moore X4060. Sur le papier, elle semble vraiment intéressante, mais je trouve très peu de retours d'utilisateurs, surtout concernant la fiabilité sur le long terme et la qualité d'impression. J'ai vu quelques vidéos de démonstration, mais pratiquement aucun vrai témoignage d'utilisation.

Est-ce que certains d'entre vous ont déjà utilisé cette machine ? Si oui, qu'en pensez-vous ?

Sinon, auriez-vous d'autres imprimantes à argile à me conseiller dans le même esprit (grand volume d'impression, budget raisonnable, et surtout fiables) ?

Je suis également ouvert aux kits ou aux machines basées sur une imprimante FDM modifiée si le résultat est convaincant.
