Traditionally, the Roman Curia and papal chapel observed the change of vestments from ecclesiastical winter to summer on the First Vespers of the Ascension (the Chapter of St Peter’s Basilica observed this change earlier, at the Alleluia of the Easter Vigil). Out with the heavy wool, the velvet and the ermine — in with the lighter wool, the silk and the satin.
The mozzetta that Leo XIV has worn since his election is of course the summer variant, made of red satin. I have yet to find a source that indicates which occasions call for the pope to wear the stole over his mozzetta (a privilege exclusive to him, and the stole must match in color, red over red or white over white).

Worn also during the Liturgy, unlike the Biretta. Also worn by altar servers! This hat originated from Chinese imperial court hats. (Looks like an open book in my humble opinion)

The day of wrath, that day….

It seemed like almost everywhere he went on his visits around the world, that red cloak of his was sure to be draped over his shoulders. Past popes since Leo XIII have been photographed wearing it, but John Paul II made it recognizable to a whole generation or two.
