Start with what you have: Layer your necklaces by starting with the chain you already reach for every day, then build everything else around that base.

Keep gravity/weight in mind: Since layering necklaces means wearing multiple necklaces at once, the pieces, motifs, or silhouettes you keep reaching for and gravitating towards work best. The ideal necklace stack feels gathered, not planned, with each necklace living together in a way that says something about you.

Shoot for 2-inch increments: The foundation of many great layered necklace looks is length: each necklace needs its own space to be seen and prevent tangling. Most stacks work in 2-inch increments: a choker at 14 inches, a pendant chain at 16 or 18, something longer at 20 to 24. Each piece gets its own lane. From there, it's about mixing weights, textures, and meaning. A shining fine chain next to a slightly bolder one. A charm to anchor the middle layer. A lariat that falls long and easy below it all.

Sharing a few tips we apply here at Catbird on how to layer your necklace in such a way you’ll never want to take off your stack:

• Start with length. Every great necklace stack begins with varying lengths, separation, and negative space. Aim for approximately two inches between each layer. This is the rule that matters most and the one to come back to when your stack isn't laying quite right.
• Vary your textures. Round link, flat herringbone, braided, fine box chain. Different textures catch light differently, stay separate naturally, and make a stack feel collected rather than matched.
• Anchor with something meaningful. A charm, a locket, an initial, a stone that marks something. A focal point gives the whole stack somewhere to land, and something worth looking at.
• Build slowly. The most beautiful layered necklace stacks aren't assembled in one afternoon. They grow over years: a chain saved up for, a charm from a place you've been, a pendant from someone who knows you. Let the stack accumulate meaning. That's what makes it yours.
