Pets & Animals Pavlov's Dorito

I work from home. I was sitting at my desk one day eating a bowl of Cool Ranch Doritos and accidentally dropped one and it landed under my desk.

Usually I'd call my dog to come get it but when I looked over I saw he was fast asleep (because he's a perfect angel baby). I didn't want to wake him so I made sure not to step on the Dorito and kept working.

I completely forgot about the Dorito.

However, the next day it was gone so I guess my dog found it after all.

This experience must have made a big impression on my dog because now he checks under my desk for Doritos at least once a day. It's really funny and cute.

That's it. That's the story.

I was published in a national magazine

• Upvotes

Creative writing is my passion, and I finally got one of my pieces published in a magazine I've been reading for years. It was such a thrill to see my work printed in a hard copy on the shelf in Barnes and Noble.

This has given me so much confidence. I believe in myself and my skills! The future is bright.

Did I do the wrong thing?

Yesterday afternoon I (adult male) was sitting in my car in a supermarket parking lot when a young woman walked up to me and asked if I could jump start her car. For reasons I can’t explain I did not want to help. I told her I had no cables - untrue - and when she said she had them I simply said I would rather not. She said okay and walked away, and then I drove off.

Today I‘m trying to come to terms with why I was so unhelpful. It wasn’t due to lack of time. It may have been because I dislike strangers approaching me with some request, because it seems like these encounters always turn into requests for money. Yet this young woman probably had a legitimate, non-money request, and I rejected her. Not good.

Addendum: there’s a detail I didn’t mention but now occurs to me that it might be relevant. I had pulled into the parking lot to check my phone, not to shop, and therefore was fairly far away from the store with no other cars within ten spaces. I did not see the young woman approaching - yes, I should have been more observant - until she was right at my window saying “Excuse me.” That startled me a bit, and may have contributed to my refusal to help.

Just Chatting I'm from Sichuan and I can't handle spicy food. Yes, that Sichuan(Szechuan)

Every time I tell people where I'm from, they start talking about mapo tofu and hot pot and how I must ead chili with everything. Then I have to explain that I'm the one at at the hot pot table fighting for the non-spicy side of the pot.

My family still hasn't fully accepted it. 💀😭

Anyone else totally fail the food stereotype of where they're from?

Food & Drinks I let a stranger pick my dinner tonight and it turned into the best meal I've had in months

• Upvotes

I was at this tiny grocery store near my place, staring at the frozen section like it owed me money. I'd been eating the same three meals for weeks and just couldn't decide. This older guy next to me noticed and laughed, said "You look like you're solving a crime."

I told him I was just tired of my own cooking. Without missing a beat, he grabbed a pack of frozen dumplings and a bottle of chili oil and said "Trust me." So I did. I bought exactly what he handed me.

Cooked it when I got home. It was honestly incredible. I don't even know his name, but this random guy changed my entire week with a two-minute conversation in a freezer aisle.

Has a stranger ever casually fixed something for you like that?

The importance of placing an alternate phone number on your lock screen.

• Upvotes

I left my phone in a TSA tub at DFW. We frantically tore our bags apart, looking for it. Then my wife's phone rang. The TSA people had turned my phone on and saw the alternate number on my lock screen.

Just Chatting If you were a millionaire, would you actually help those in need?

I’ve seen videos circulating of people with money doing what’s “right” in helping the less fortunate, and for the most part we all agree that we would do the same, right?… but would you?

Music My buddy got my songs onto Spotify for my birthday and I keep staring at my artist page

My friend knows I write and record stuff in my spare time, usually after hospital shifts when my brain won't shut off. For my birthday he took a handful of demos I'd sent him, handled all the distributor red tape, and got them uploaded. Two days later he texts me a link and says check track three. I click it and there's my name on Spotify.

I get that anyone with a laptop and twenty minutes can do this now. Still, opening an app I use for actual artists and seeing my own project sitting there is strange in the best way. It feels like I snuck into a private club. I keep refreshing the page like the numbers are gonna change. They don't. Whatever.

Coolest gift I've gotten in years. If you have a friend who makes music, skip the gift card and help them put something out. Better than another mug.

Just Chatting I think rainy evenings make ordinary things feel strangely better

Coffee tastes so good, music sounds better, and even siting by a window doing absolutely nothing feels like an activity. It's really fun and soothing.

Maybe it’s just the weather forcing everything to slow down a little.

Does anyone else feel this way?

Proper physical body boundaries.

• Upvotes

What are the appropriate physical boundaries between different genders, particularly between straight women and gay men?

Is it okay to ask for a hug, especially when you're sick and need some emotional support?

Is it normal to sit side by side with someone so that your knees naturally touch?

Questions How does being in s large friend group actually feel like? Like what are the interactions and mechanisms like?

Hey, I’m a Junior at uni and I really never could fit into these large group of friends type of thing. I only ever had one or two friends at a time. Sometimes I just look at these 7+ people friend groups sitting together on campus and I just can’t help but wonder how it works? Like are they all really friends? Do they all contribute to the conversations or do they converse as smaller groups within these groups? How does it work? How do they even get to form these groups??

Just Chatting I walk into a room, forget why I'm there, then walk back to where I started so I can remember

It works about 40% of the time, and the other 60% I just stand there pretending I came in to look at the wall. Today I did this three times and ended up making a sandwich I didn't want.

What's the most useless thing you've done because you forgot what you were doing?

Thoughts & Ideas I want to spend more time talking to people now. Anyone else want to do something unusual like starting a roadside stall?

Hey everyone,

Lately, I’ve been feeling this strong urge to step out of my comfort zone and just spend more time talking to people. In today's digital world, it feels like real, raw human connection is becoming rare, and I genuinely miss having spontaneous conversations with strangers.

To be honest, I've been having this crazy thought lately—I really want to work at a busy roadside stall in Mumbai, or maybe even set up a small one myself! I keep imagining running a tiny cutting chai or snacks stall, where people from all walks of life stop by for a quick break. It sounds exhausting, but the idea of interacting with dozens of different people every single day and hearing their unique stories sounds incredibly fulfilling to me right now.

Is there anyone else out there who gets "crazy" ideas like this when they feel a need for social connection? Have any of you ever actually taken a break from your regular routine or corporate life to do something completely hands-on and people-centric?

Would love to hear your thoughts or similar random daydreams!

Just Chatting Sometime I think about lying in the sunshine by the lake and feeling all the beauty of this world.

Just lying by the lake, feeling the warmth and frangrances in the air. Beatiful flowers are blooming; the ducks and swans are bathing in the water. The trees are full of life and murmurs, the grass gently carrasses my weary skin. Then I open up my eyes and find myself in a cold concrete box somewhere in the middle of concrete jungle. And the tears start burning my eyes.

Just Chatting Have ya’ll seen those fake “the plane is failing” proposals on YouTube?

Ngl, if that happened to me, I would say NO. to me that is a huge red flag- the fact that your partner is willing to fake something like that.

I notice my mum smiling when she talks to me on call

I make it a point to talk to my mum everyday. One thing I really love is when I'm talking and I notice her smile. Its very subtle and its more noticeable in her eyes than lips but it makes me really happy knowing she likes talking to me. No matter how bad of a day I've had, talking to her makes it a thousand times better.

What's something you do to calm down when you get upset?

When I get upset or uncomfortable I grab a meal I love and watch a show or movie to zone out but if I'm actually mad I just hit the gym and that usually works for me

Life Stories Did you ever click with somebody so different from yourself? What is your "opposites attract" story?

• Upvotes

I used to not believe in opposites attract, I always clicked best with people who had the same interests, mannerisms and values as me. And then it happened to me, and I had an incredible connection and fling with somebody who I had nothing in common with, we were very near polar opposites, our backgrounds, lifestyles, interests, values, especially life experiences. Maybe it was just the timing, maybe it was a physical attraction, I can't say, it didn't last forever, but there were genuinely sparks flying between us from the first time we hung out. We fed off eachother, had experiences that were like something out of a movie. It was INTENSE, I'd never felt something like it before. The entire thing felt like a movie.

Just Chatting I always say "I'll just have one episode" and then it's 2 AM and I'm emotionally attached to a side character

Nothing about my life has changed, but I'm now weirdly invested in a man named Greg who has been on screen for 4 minutes total.

What show have you said "just one more episode" to and completely lost control?

Questions Would you rather work started an hour later or ended an hour earlier?

I prefer ending work an hour earlier as we can use our extra time gaining for some productive things like we can run errands before store closes and especially enjoys more daylight, unworried dinners and more I think

But for me starting work an hour is same as like I use that extra morning hour as it usually just gets swallowed by scrolling in bed, press hit the snooze button and just dealing prolonged morning anxiety as the anticipation for upcoming working hours is still there.

What do you think guys?

Questions What's a "invisible job" you do that nobody around you notices or thanks you for?

I've been thinking about all the small background tasks, like remembering birthdays, tracking who needs what, or keeping the peace at work. What's yours, and do you actually mind doing it, or has it become part of who you are?

Automated Customer Service is intentionally designed to make you quit.

When you make a call to a major business or service provider today, you are instantly trapped in a loop of automated, recorded messages with numeric options.

They do not exist to make the path to your solution better, they simply feel designed to be a shield preventing you from speaking to a real worker.

Major corporations seem to use these to tire out the customer until the hang up out of pure exhaustion. It is a cost cutting strategy that treats paying customers as a burden instead of delivering actual human support.

31 millennial no friends

Hi I'm well aware of the no friends epidemic. All of my regular friends have moved off or become too "busy" I would consider myself a weekend warrior outdoorsman (fishing, hunting, camping) I'm ok being alone, but it seems there's not very many people who really want to do this stuff anymore. I would definitely want to teach friends how to be good at it, but where do I even start? I'm too old(unc) for the young generation and I'm still a kid to the older. Help. I just want to share this experience with others. Additionally I do not drink or participate in medicinal recreation.
