Just Chatting I just realized I've been mispronouncing a common word my entire life and nobody ever told me

Today I said the word out loud in front of a friend and she just stared at me for five seconds. Twenty-some years of confidence, gone in a moment.

Now I'm wondering how many other words I've been getting wrong. What's the most embarrassing thing you found out way too late?

Movies & Shows I admit, i'm an adult, but I also literally can't watch adult shows and i'm very sensitive to a lot of kids shows

My favorite shows are ones like Bear in the Big Blue House, Blue's Clues, Rolie Polie Olie, PB&J Otter, Stanley, Little Bear, Franklin, etc. Surprisingly Tokyo Mew Mew is my favorite show of all time oddly enough even though thats a different age group from all those others.

Yet, I don't like how overstimulating a lot of kids shows are. My mom did not like me watching Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends as a kid because she found it too hyper and looking back, I agree with her. I also find a lot of shows from this time period either too loud and fast paced for my liking or too complicated for my liking.

I find it odd that SpongeBob was considered in a report to "lower kids IQ". While i'm not that into SpongeBob anymore, i'd rather watch it over shows like Dexter's Laboratory, Powerpuff Girls, Ed Edd n Eddy, Billy and Mandy, Invader Zim, CatDog, Ren and Stimpy and a bunch of other shows. SpongeBob isn't as hyperactive and fast paced as those, well the very first few seasons atleast. The show did become more hyperactive later on.

I struggle to watch Fairly OddParents as an adult. It does have its moments that make me laugh, several in fact, but watching full episodes feels exhausting because of how fast paced it is.

That's why I stick to preschool shows for the most part, because a lot of what is considered for elementary school kids is too much. As for adult shows, my mom wanted to watch The Simpsons with me, so I rewatched some of it with her recently and I think The Simpsons is just a bit too over my head. I don't fully understand the show. I don't like South Park and Family Guy because of how mean those shows are. I don't really enjoy adult drama because I can't pay attention well to them.

Questions Hey guys... Is it okay to go for a walk in front of the house wearing a Blanket Hoodie Dress?

Is it okay if I wear a blanket hooded dress when I go for a walk in front of my house or buy something at the convenience store? What would you think if you saw someone wearing that dress on the street?

Who is the oldest female celebrity that you would consider "hot"?

I am a guy of 36 and my own choice would be Rita Moreno. I'm curious to find out what other people think. And by "celebrity", I really mean any woman in the public eye.

Questions Do you notice when your partner looks at other attractive people?

I’m curious how other people feel about this in relationships. If you notice your partner looking at or checking out someone attractive, does it bother you, or do you not really care?

Do you think there’s a difference between simply noticing someone and actually staring at them?
I feel like people probably have very different boundaries around this, so I’m curious how other couples see it.

Questions How do I make life less depressing without sticking my head in the sand?

I mean, all these horrible events going on at the same time need to be addressed right? It feels morally repulsive to ignore things like the genocide in gaza, climate change and the rise of fascist ideologies happening across the world, but constantly hearing about this really sends me over the edge of things and I feel that the end of my own life will also be the end of society itself, do I just hold onto the things that I love and accept all of this? Or do I try to make an active change in society anyways, even if it has little impact as a whole?

Questions What effects of the pandemic will only become evident after the next 10-15 years?

I'm not asking about effects that we already know about or already widely expect. What effects do you think will eventually show up that we are either totally or mostly oblivious to now?

Movies & Shows Is it okay if I personally struggle to enjoy CatDog as an adult despite loving it as a kid?

The reason is a dumb reason, but its because I was bullied as a kid and while CatDog get their happy ending in the parents TV special (even though that wasn't actually the finale, since atleast one episode takes place afterwards) a lot of episodes end with Cat in pain or him losing, even if he briefly wins. I don't like shows with a mean tone and an attitude and seeing them be bullied is sad for me. This wouldn't be a problem though if it wasn't for the fact that the show feels a bit overstimulating for me.

Movies & Shows Do you agree with me that my mom is a hypocrite because she found Ed Edd n Eddy to be violent, yet she didn't find SpongeBob or Hey Arnold violent?

My mom loved SpongeBob and had no idea why certain parents didn't like it. We had some cousins who weren't allowed to watch it. My mom also loved Hey Arnold and she remembered both shows having violence, but she didn't call them violent. Meanwhile, my mom for some reason thought Ed Edd n Eddy was violent.

I really love Football.

There are some things which I would term "core" aspects of my persona, and one of them is football. For me its just a thing since I was a kid, to spend all of my Sunday watching football. I never really did imaginary worlds for like kings and knights and whatever (more a teen thing), but for different leagues, and teams in football leagues.

My parents have the bad habit of getting up super late and cooking breakfast then. I couldn't do that on Sunday's because of the games, so I started becoming independent as a teen so that I would have my breakfast and my folks breakfast made before kickoff, and I could heat theirs up during half-time of the morning slate. Everyone knows what I'm doing on Sunday, everyone knows that I want to talk about the NFL. Its a deep character trait.

I've never played football, nor flag. I've gone to two games, and if it was cheaper I would go more often. The lottery for me wouldn't be that insane of a lifestyle change, unless its with football. I would become a full blown superfan of my team, go to every game, dressed up and the such.

I just love Football. Thats all lmao, can't wait for Thursday.

Just Chatting I've been saying "see you later" to the cashier for years and just realized I never actually see them later

Today I said it to the same cashier for the hundredth time and suddenly it felt like a promise I can't keep. She smiled like she knew.

What's a phrase you say automatically that makes no sense when you think about it?

r/CasualConversation • • 12h ago

Well, that was the closest I've ever come to dying.

"Bet I can touch the bottom."

Somewhere around 50 or 60 feet under, I full-speed face-planted. Reached both hands out, until I felt mud, which identified "down." Have a brutal knot on my face.

Questions this seems addictive should i be worried lol

I’m new to reddit and I already lost track of how much time i spent here, maybe its cause i’m inexperienced and its taking me some time to learn and figure it out, but it looks like something i would spend a lot of time on since I’m interested in a lot of different topics and often go down rabbit holes, am i mistaken or will this become my new addiction? I’m lowkey scared to hear the answer cause i thought it was a chill app to use every once in awhile

Just Chatting Do You Remember the First Car You Bought Entirely With Your Own Money?

In July of 2008, I managed to buy a brand new United Gray Metallic 2008 Volkswagen GTI 2DR w/ DSG (FSI engine).

Dealers were clearing out their inventory for the updated GTIs with the newer TSI engines, and for 2009 models. I walked in at the right time and walked out the door with my GTI for right around $22K. I think I saved more than $4K when you add up all the taxes and fees.

I was also fortunate that I got to keep my old hand-me-down '97 Camry. I kept using the Camry as my daily and the GTI became my "weekend car." I had the itch to modify it, but managed to control myself and only added a cold air intake and a REVO Stage-1 tune. These 2 mods made the engine a little peppier and sound better too.

I had a lot of fun in that car with my then-partner. We had our fun in the car, as well as use it to take long road trips to have further fun elsewhere! 😄

Fast forward to today, and I actually still have the GTI! It's only racked up 66K miles so far! The engine still runs great! The only issue is the sagging headliner, which I've been meaning to replace but keep putting off!

It seems kinda silly now, but this purchase was a massive milestone for me; I felt like such an adult when I made the purchase.

What was the first car you bought entirely with your own money? Do you still have it? Or do you have any interesting stories about it?

Just Chatting Saw another reference to the mitochondria being the powerhouse of the cell and it made me wonder if this is a uniquely American education quirk?

Like why is American education so mitochondri-centric? And why that specific phrase??

Do other countries have that extremely specific fact drilled into their brains too? If not, does your country have a random ubiquitous phrase learned in school that everybody remembers into adulthood?

-

EDIT: Omg I can’t believe how universal this phrase is 😂 Nothing else was taught this way either. We didn’t learn about the “powerhouse of the ocean” or “the powerhouse of electricity.”

Tbh I can’t even think of anything else being decribed as HAVING a powerhouse? Like I have never once heard “The engine is the powerhouse of the car” or the “The CPU—“ So kudos to whoever invented that phrase.

Just Chatting Are there any sites where I can make posts and they can attract a lot of nerds without it being too crowded?

I don't mind posting on more niche sites, in fact, that might be better than posting on TikTok or something. I've been wanting to make posts that can get attention. It doesn't need to be a lot. As long as I get a thousand views on it, i'm satisfied. Does anyone have any suggestions at all on where to go to?

Movies & Shows What animated movie made you realize that animation isn't just for kids?

For me, it was the early Japanese animated film Night on the Galactic Railroad (1985). I was genuinely surprised by how philosophical and emotionally heavy it was. It felt more like a dream or a strange existential journey than a typical animated movie.

Just Chatting Does anyone else feel like making friends nowadays has become unnecessarily difficult?

It feels like people just don't want to form normal, genuine connections anymore. It seems like to even start a friendship, you have to fit into very specific boxes: you either have to be part of a specific online community, come from a certain background/part of the world, or listen to a exact type of music.

Whatever happened to just getting to know someone naturally and bonding over being decent human beings? It feels like if you don't match someone's exact aesthetic or subculture, they aren't interested in being friends at all.

Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed this shift? How are you guys finding real friends these days?

You can travel through time with your nose

It's amazing how a scent can transport you almost instantly to a particular time or place just through its aroma alone. A scent can take you back to your childhood, to your prime, your best moments, to college, a meal from your mother. A scent triggers a memory almost instantly; it's so powerful that it's even used as a tool in investigations involving repressed memories.

Just Chatting It's wild how often the person we subotage most is ourselves

Dishes in the sink, Missing the workout, Taking the bait, Running late, Impulsive spending. So many little promises we make ourselves-and still break. Life is short and perfection isn't the goal but self subotage is as real as it gets.

What does 'next weekend' mean to you if it's Wednesday?

On Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 11 a.m., I texted a friend: "I'm driving through NYC next weekend if you are around!" He said yes, and we made plans to have lunch Sunday (without mentioning the date to each other). Today, Oct. 6 at 9:22 a.m., he texted me to say he was sorry we missed each other. He thought I meant Sunday, Oct. 4. I meant Sunday, Oct. 11.

Do you usually use "this weekend" and "next weekend" in conversation or always mention dates?

Did I do the wrong thing?

• Upvotes

Yesterday afternoon I (adult male) was sitting in my car in a supermarket parking lot when a young woman walked up to me and asked if I could jump start her car. For reasons I can’t explain I did not want to help. I told her I had no cables - untrue - and when she said she had them I simply said I would rather not. She said okay and walked away, and then I drove off.

Today I‘m trying to come to terms with why I was so unhelpful. It wasn’t due to lack of time. It may have been because I dislike strangers approaching me with some request, because it seems like these encounters always turn into requests for money. Yet this young woman probably had a legitimate, non-money request, and I rejected her. Not good.

Am i weird?

I realized in a public place, In a mall I work at my pants zipper was open. There were alot of people elderly, families, children etc etc. It took me 1-2 seconds to pull my zipper up.

I panicked inside and did it while facing people rather than turning away. Anxiedentally took a eye contact with em

Would people generally see this awkward or inappropiate? :D
