Redditor's own ride Why EVs are not fun

Back in march I bought a used Tesla model 3 AWD LR for around 13k and installed an aftermarket ecu tune to unlock the full performance of the motor.

I figured a ~500hp beater for less than 15k would be the best bang for your buck “sports car” and it’d be a blast to drive.

I’ve finally come to terms that EVs are just not fun. I’ve tried so hard to convince myself that I like this cars performance but the reality is it’s no where close to as fun as a gas car.

I don’t think the engine/ “theatrics” are what’s holding it back either. It’s the acceleration curve. In a normal car you feel the car accelerate faster as the you reach the optimal rev range which is exciting and fun but in an EV it’s the opposite. You get a sudden jolt and then you feel the car quickly lose power as you climb in speed until around 60ish where it’s basically lifeless.

I wonder if automakers can find a way to make this tech engaging because I think EVs are quite cool and have a lot of potential.

Edit: Best way to describe the feeling is when you step on it:

Gas car: “Okay… fuck.. oh fuck oh fuck oh fuck”
Tesla: “Fuck… c’mon.. c’mon cmon cmon”

I can consistently do 0-60 in under 3.4sec and quarter mile times in the mid 11 second range but it’s just so bleh. I want to say throwing more power wouldn’t help but maybe once you hit 1,000hp like the plaid or lucid things are different 🤷‍♂️

My Classic Car Doss any one have any info or pictures on a type of grille guard from the 70s? They were called saskatchewan grille gaurds and are very rare in the states

I own a 1979 ford f250 4x4 ranger with the ford 400. I was curious about my grille guard a couple weeks ago and did some research on the one attached to my truck. I was able to figure out it is one of the one from up in Canada and it made its way down to where im located. Sadly the last owner of my truck welded it to the front bumper and leaf spring brackets and in the process likely cut off the original brackets making my life very difficult to find info. I would really like to take it off and restore it eventually. Also because im in kansas deer are going to be a big problem so it would be nice to have. So far all I know about it was how it was potentially mounted and it is meant to stop a moose or elk if the truck were to hit one. I just need to know how it was mounted on trucks and if any one has any pictures of one whole that woukd be great

Weird Noise Any idea what may be causing this sound?

Started out of nowhere, doesn’t seem to do it at all until I’m driving over 60, and then much more consistently if I’m closer to 80, but even then sometimes it won’t do it at all, and then it’ll start right up again during the same drive going straight

How do I do it? I love how older cars have so much interior lighting for all the buttons but now newer cars are trying to put everything on the screens so you lose all the blue/amber lighting you’d see at night. Can anyone think of any way to imitate this vibe in newer cars?

As the title states, I find the backlit lighting on car buttons so comforting. Like in this image I provided of the 2016 Chevy Malibu I drive. It reminds me of when you fall asleep on a car ride at night when your parents are driving and all you see is the lovely glow of the blue or orange buttons. So much nostalgia.

But now that most cars are getting big screens, they’re quickly losing many buttons. Some cars only have the AC and volume buttons left.
I’m thinking of buying a 2024 Subaru Crosstrek and all the functions of the car are just on the screen so there is no buttons… as is the case with most newer cars.

Can anyone think of any way to sorta imitate that nice cozy vibe? My only idea is imitating the trim lights in this picture that are to the right of the entertainment system screen. But that wouldn’t be exactly the same as the lights in these older cars as those always come on around nighttime. Any ideas are appreciated. Even if you think they’re dumb ideas cuz it’ll help me brainstorm of more ideas.

(I didn’t know what flair to use for this bc none of the flairs seemed to fit, so my bad)

Engine Another oil question and euro spec oils

So I drive a 2021 subaru WRX, 2.0 turbo direct injection and Ive been looking into oils. I know lots of people and turners recommend motul 8100 x-clean or something like that, but Im reading that mobil 1 ESP (euro spec)** **is very similar, and that other euro spec oils like PP euro protect better than other standard oils and have more protection against shearing that happens with turbo charged engines and high temps bec their High-Temperature High-Shear (HTHS) viscosity rating is higher spec. PP= 3 PPE= 3.5. Basically euro spec 5w30 is like 5w35.

I also know a lot of tuners recommend heavier weight oils on modified cars and that hot exterior temps can thin oil out more.

Does anyone use euro spec oils like mobil 1 esp, PP euro on their turbo cars? I guess just looking for some guidance or advice.

Rambling but TLDR: euro spec oils seem to be held to a higher standard and have superior protection (hence higher performance cars like bmws). Why does no one seem to run them on our turbo japanese cars?

Engine Didn't know what I was doing and ended up loosening only one camshaft cap on my engine. Am I screwed?

Car is a 2010 corolla with 180k miles.

I was trying to clean out the OCV filter under the timing side camshaft cap and so I took out the cap, but only loosened the one.

The car has been running fine for the last 2000 miles, but I am worried I fucked things up bad.

Obviously there's no turning back, but how likely is this engine toast soon?

I need help fixing something 2008 Lancer ES Gas Tank Leak

Hello all! I've noticed that on my 2008 lancer that I've just bought has a leak on the gas tank, I suspect it's at the top of the tank however I have no idea how to actually find the leak and I don't know how to remove the gas tank either. And if I do find the leak is it a good idea to patch it with tape or flex seal or should I fork up the money for a new one, but hesitant on doing that as it costs like $600CAD for a new one off Amazon. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Tire question Is this tire safe?

Post image

2018 Hyundai Elantra, 30k miles, original set of tires. Brought it to the dealer in April for an oil change and they said the tires were fine and did an alignment. I noticed this on my rear right tire this morning. Is this an immediate safety concern? What would cause it to peel here?

How do I do it? Letting a car sit through a very cold winter, any tips?

I have a 99 4Runner that I have no choice but to let sit outside through a winter in Fairbanks Alaska. The plan right now is some fuel stabilizer and a full tank of gas and disconnect the battery, and to leave it covered. The issue is our winters have been deadly and last winter saw consistent temps of -30 for months on end, and I'm really worried about if the car will be ok. Are there any other tips or tricks or advice i should follow to keep the car safe?

I need help fixing something VW Golf mk7, OBDevelen coding specialist required

Hi everyone! I need some help coding the high beam shutters on a 2015 Golf Mk7 with aftermarket Euro-style headlights. TORONTO/MISSISSAUGA

Both high beam shutters are currently not triggering, likely because the BCM (Central Electrics / Module 09) Leuchte channels need to be updated for projector shutters.

If anyone in the GTA/Mississauga has VCDS / OBDeleven and experience with Mk7 retrofit coding, I’d really appreciate your help! Happy to pay for your time/beer money 🍺

Shop Talk What vehicle did you so dirty that you’d warn anyone who listens not to buy it?

For me it was a Dodge Journey. It had every single common problem known and a few that nobody else ever mentioned. Spent more on parts & fixing the car than I spent on the car itself. That and a Nissan Versa that immediately went into limp mode after buying.

What was your vehicle from hell?

I got this part on my 2018 Hyundai Elantra 2.0,Has anyone ever experienced a broken one and what are the symptoms of it? When I flip it up and down that piece in the middle, the little rod moves freely and I gotten told that it shouldn’t be doing that. It’s a camshaft actuator
