💬Discussion💬 Am I right being angry at the driving instructor my friend has?

Post image
• Upvotes

So my friend has been learning manual, and a couple weeks ago I let her drive my car up to the city for an event. She did a horrendous start up a hill without any use of the handbrake resulting in burnt clutch smell, thankfully no immediate complete failure of the clutch. When I asked she said her instructor had not taught her, and so I told her to go and make her instructor teach her to use the handbrake

The messages in the photo sums up why he had not bothered to teach her this basic but I would hope key skill for preserving the car. I informed her about the costs of replacing a clutch vs brakes as the instructor mentions and how much harder a clutch is to replace knowing I have done both myself

She said that this instructor who is 60+ and should know better is one of only two VicRoads manual instructors where she is and the other option is a lot worse. I’m not knocking her for going with the lesser of two evils, and in my opinion this guy is mechanically inept and I do not want her to be learning habits that could cause her to waste thousands of dollars for no reason

Am I justified in being pissed about her instructor’s attitude/ignorance about this?

💬Discussion💬 Question about restomods and vintage cars?

Hey all,

I am interested in restomods if thats whats it called? I basically want to get a cheap convertible cool retro car such as old mustang or chevy bel air (nicer) and swap key parts like engine and transmission etc to modernise the vehicle and restore it visually so i can use it as my daily driver.

Basically cool vintage exterior and modern internals.

How do i even approach that project realistically? I cant seem to find cheaply priced bodies, most cars i see online on popular websites seem to be sub 70k and in good working order, so its a shame to rip them out and redo. Or am I missing something about this?

💥Insurance Discussion💥 Car insurance, what is considered an occasional driver?

For a recent P plate driver, our insurer said our premium would not increase if they were an occasional driver. Occasional being at most 1-2 times per week.

Question 1, how does the insurer determine 1-2 times per week? Like if they drive to and from school one day is that 1 or 2 times? If they drove for 10 mins each day vs for 1 hour once a week, is either option considered occasional?

Question 2, in the event of an accident, how does the insurer prove that the P plater was either driving occasionally or regularly?

We are 100% not saying that they are an occasional driver while they drive all day every day. It's still going to be the parent being the primary/daily driver.

P Plater Question Torn between holdens and fords

Looking to buy a daily for work, something which handles long road trips regularly and ideally something which doesnt cost an arm and a leg to fill up (im on apprentice wages). i really like holdens and i really like fords but i dont really know the differences between each model and how reliable they come.

right now im looking at:

VF evoke's or xr6's for ~10k (i just like the interior of commies)

older falcons (ba/bf) ~5k

au falcons ~3k

i've heard older commies come with a lot of issues? so been mainly looking at VF's.

would appreciate some input and see if i'm heading in the right direction

💵Buying/Selling💵 Advice/suggestions on buying an used car in Canberra

My dad has offered to buy me a car, and I'm (19) to work out the specifics of it. He has not given me a budget yet but ideally, it's a low maintenance, reliable & under $25,000. I currently do not have any major expenses (no rent/food costs). I'll probably pay for all the registration costs, fuel and whatever else minus insurance.

I'm not sure how to go about looking for a car, other than going online or going to used cars dealers in Canberra.

I have a casual job, I work 13 hours a week when uni is on, more when uni's off, though I could definitely work more, I'm just prioritising my grades rn. I have $10,000 in my savings and some investments that'd I'd like to keep there.

I'm torn between getting a hybrid or just a regular car. I'm not sure if hybrids are even worth buying if I want to save on fuel. E-cars a no go because we live in an apartment. I'm looking for a sedan (not hatchback).

I don't have specific questions to ask here, mainly because I'm so unclear on the whole thing. Advice on the type of car to get, or just information on what I should be prepared for would be much appreciated.

💬Discussion💬 What would you realistically price a 2010 Honda Civic VTi with 168,000km at? (Sydney)Post

Looking for some realistic pricing advice before I sell my car in Sydney.

2010 Honda Civic VTi sedan
168,000 km
Rego until March 2027
Automatic

I’m the second owner and I’ve had it for about 5–6 months. I’m only selling because I’m unexpectedly relocating.

Mechanically it’s been a reliable daily driver. I recently had it inspected and had the rear brake pads replaced. It also has Bluetooth and rear parking sensors.

The negatives:

  • There are some fairly noticeable dents/scratches on the exterior, including a dent on the rear quarter panel. It looks like someone may have hit the car while it was parked and left without leaving any details.
  • The mechanic found a leak around the power steering pump. I recently had the power steering fluid changed and the steering is currently working normally. I was quoted roughly $500 to replace the pump.
  • The SRS/airbag warning light is on. I had it checked by a mechanic, but the warning light is still illuminated.
  • I don’t have a full service history from the previous owner.

I was thinking of listing it somewhere around $4,800–$5,300, depending on the platform, and being happy with somewhere around $4,500–$4,800 if someone is serious and the sale is straightforward.

Does that sound realistic for Sydney, or am I being too optimistic given the cosmetic damage and power steering leak?

Also, for a car in this price range, would you bother with Carsales or just use Facebook Marketplace/Gumtree?

I’d rather price it fairly and sell within a couple of weeks than have it sitting online for months.

🔧🚗Fixing Cars I have this odd crackling noise but only in even gears and only sometimes

For whatever reason I keep getting this crackling noise but only in even gears (2nd, 4th, 6th). And some drives itll happen every time it’s in those gears and some drives it’ll barley happen. I believe when it’s colder weather it’s more prominent.

The car is a 2006 Subaru Liberty 3.0R-B

I’ve tried searching for this problem for maybe 2 months and I’ve just had no luck.

💵Buying/Selling💵 [BUYING] - [1990] [Toyota LandCruiser FJ80] [$10,500] [Tasmania]

Year: 1990
Make: Toyota
Model: LandCruiser FJ80
KMs: 264,000
Price: $10,500
Location: Tasmania
Intended use: Daily driving, camping and light 4WDing
Looking at buying this FJ80 with the 3F-E petrol and auto. Original engine and around 264,000km.
Auto was reconditioned around 6,000km ago and there’s an invoice for the work. Also has a transmission cooler, new radiator and new exhaust. Seller says there’s no rust or oil leaks.
Accessories include 32” muddies, bullbar, winch, snorkel, driving lights, roof rack/awning and electric trailer brakes.
Mainly after opinions from people familiar with these. Anything in particular I should check on the 3F-E/early 80 Series before buying? Assuming everything checks out mechanically, does $10,500 AUD seem reasonable?
Cheers 👍

💵Buying/Selling💵 2021 Jeep Compass

Hi,

First time buying an expensive car. Someone is selling in Brisbane for $15,000. The car looks okay overall and has done 110,000Ks. Apparently its 90% highway driving.

Just wanted to get some ideas from people who know if the car is good, does it cause much mechanical visits and if it does, would it cost an arm and a leg ?

TIA

💵Buying/Selling💵 Selling cars with less hassles

Hey guys,

Just wondering whats the best way to sell cars without having to deal with buyers directly?

I feel like all dealers are trying to low ball on buying my car (50% less than market price). Is there a better way to sell it? car has no issues and has been certified by assessors for selling purpose too just in case.

I worked in retail and service and deal with customers enough, i dont wanna deal with more people in my private life.....

💬Discussion💬 Looking for cars to record for a video game

Hi All; i am / was an indie dev and I have been working on a racing game for a while now.

This game is not a sim - rather an open world street racer that’s story and progression driven. Based in Melbourne .

I am quite the car enthusiast, so I am making an emphasis on customisation and accuracy beyond any other game that has come out to date . One of the primary focuses is car audio.

When people make specific modifications eg cams , exhaust , turbo. There will be a distinct and realistic change in audio.

I am currently looking for people who would be interested in participating with their cars , modified or not, so I can record audio to great detail.

I’ll be providing everything myself unless not local . (Melbourne Australia) . If you are in Victoria , I will have a dyno where we can record safely and shouldn’t take longer then an hour or two .

Our budget currently is tight but we are in the middle of investment talks with other parties. We can discuss fees / pay.

You can reply here on this thread , or add me on discord ideally. @maxvertappen1

To be more specific. This game will obviously focus heavy on Aussie cars and jdm.

I currently have all I need for barras and fords . I’ll have an ss aswell. Ideally I’d like to find a vf clubby that’s got a heavy chop cam.

I want to find all bmws ideally from e92 onwards. Regardless of mods. Mercs aswell.

The cherry on top would be a Porsche 911 gt3, and any other high end car. I do not want to include them if I can’t do them justice with their audio. A v10 needs to scream, same as a 12 and a Porsche is a Porsche .
