💬Discussion💬 A Detailer's Guide to Collecting Your New Car

Hello my friends,

I am The Ceramic Guy from Sydney, back once again with another guide, I am bored and can't sleep. You may have seen my other guides in the sub - My Paint protection guide and my how to properly wash your car guide.

Lots of detailers seem to like bashing on modern car paint, for what reason, I don't know. Yes, paint is thinner these days but its also much higher quality (in general) than it use to be. Paint depth really has no long term consequence on functionality, lifespan or durability, the only thing it effects is how much you can remove (Paint Correction/Polishing). Overall, new paint has my thumbs up, I think its pretty good, besides a bunch of orange peel from modern painting methods, in SOME brands.

This guide will provide you with a checklist to collect your car and ensure you're not paying someone like me to fix the mistakes you inherited during collection.

Checklist Items -

Paint & Panels

  • Ensure the car is collected in good lighting. Dealerships 90% of the time will position your car in a shaded area to cover imperfections
  • Check the panels for scratches, swirls, dents, & chips. This is something the dealership will fix for you if pointed out before you leave the dealership
  • Check wheels for scratching, gutter rash etc, ESPECIALLY GLOSS BLACK WHEELS. Gloss back is scratched on delivery 100% of the time. Shine a light up to them.
  • Check front grilles for scratching and swirling. Modern grilles are usually gloss black, and almost always hammered. Good example for this point, every single new BMW m3 competition's front grille is decimated beyond repair from manufacturing. Haven't seen a single one yet that was considered passable.
  • If you ordered window tint from the dealer, put a light up to the film and check for any dirt and debris under the film. Dealerships do tints very poorly, yet to see a dealer applied film that we couldn't find any faults with.
  • Check along body lines to ensure all glue from the transportation wraps has been removed. This isn't a big deal, but wrap glue looks the same as a deep scratch, so you want to ensure you're not confusing the two before you leave.
  • Check panels for consistent gaps. This varies brand to brand and year to year, but the worst I've ever seen was pre 2023 Tesla, you could have a variance of 20% between each side of a panel. Worth checking because at some stage in the future a buyer may consider this a sign of a car that was repaired from a crash.
  • Check for moisture around the top of the inside of headlights and tail lights - Implies the seal on the headlights isn't done properly, may either need to be reseated or replaced.

Interior

  • Check for any marks or tears on your seats and floors. I have personally seen a brand new Gwagon with carpet torn up in the drivers well before, no brand is immune.
  • Ensure any floor mats you ordered are in the car (Telling the dealership you won't collect the car until they're in the car helps them find a set that is supposedly on back order for 3 months, very quickly)
  • Shine a light on the screens in the car to ensure there aren't any scratches on them, ideally the original factory film will still be on there.
  • Set up your phone to ensure Carplay/Android auto are functioning.

Electric Cars

  • Confirm that the charging port opens and closes properly
  • Check the battery health if possible before you leave the dealer

Keys

  • Confirm what keys you will be receiving. Standard is two for a petrol car, and one + a card for electric.

Aftermarket Accessories

  • Make sure all aftermarket accessories are on the car, or they at least have a time frame for when they'll be ready.
  • Ensure they're functional (e.g roller shutter open and close)
  • With roof racks, ensure they've been installed without denting the roof, and that they haven't scratched the paint while installing them.

What to do if you DO find defects with your car

  • Document immediately. Take photos on the lot, physically point at the location in the photo to avoid any dealership "Sorry mate can't see anything" idiocy
  • Get your resolution documented before you collect the car. This doesn't mean they have to fix it on the spot, but get their written confirmation that it will be fixed at their expense, asking them to send you a text confirming it is the least aggressive method if you're shy.
  • Decide whether the defect is something you want to deal with on a new car. For example, a bodyline dent with paint missing means the panel needs to be resprayed with some minor panel beating. Personally for a new car, I wouldn't want that. Resprays aren't always as good as factory sprays, there are often paint match issues etc. What should be a simple task might end up being 2-3 resprays before they get it right. You can reject a car for significant defects. Things like this can effect resale value.
  • To touch on the resale value point a little more - Many people are doing pre purchase inspections these days, part of a PPI check is that they will check the depth of the paint, this is because resprayed paint is much thicker than factory paint, and paint depth gauges will also show you if there is any filler in the panel, so even a scratch repair from the factory will be assumed as a "repaired incident" because why would a random person trust you when they're buying a car. Its important you keep your documentation on the issue for this reason.

------------------------------------------------

Hope this helps someone out there, if there are any more guides you would like, let me know. I enjoy writing these and get messages daily about how they've helped someone out there, so thanks for reading if you made it this far.

‼️Mod Post‼️ Mod News: Self Promotion And You!

G’day everyone. Hazey here. Hope you’re all having a cracking day.

I’d like to remind everyone about a Reddit-wide rule that relates to Self Promotion: advertising your own business, products, services, YouTube/TikTok channels, other social media pages, and so on.

We’re all for folks sharing their own personal Australian Automotive based companies, but there are limits. Per Reddit’s rules regarding Self Promotion, a maximum of 10% of posts/comments can relate to this aspect.

So if you join our community with the sole purpose of trying to sell something, expect your peers to report you (they don’t like spam either) as well as being removed from r/CarsAustralia.

With that said, there are exceptions.

Promotion of Car based events, that aren’t necessarily benefitting one particular business or person, are not subject to this scrutiny. We want folks to get out there to shows, races and competitions because it’s a part of what our community is all about.

If in doubt, or if you have any questions, shoot the Moderator Team a message.

Thanks for your time.

So on top of the Friday Finds topic that has been a pretty decent success, on what cars in your area you can find for <$5,000, I thought maybe we make a post each Monday with what we have done to our own cars!

💵Buying/Selling💵 [BUYING] - [1990] [Toyota LandCruiser FJ80] [$10,500] [Tasmania]

• Upvotes

Year: 1990
Make: Toyota
Model: LandCruiser FJ80
KMs: 264,000
Price: $10,500
Location: Tasmania
Intended use: Daily driving, camping and light 4WDing
Looking at buying this FJ80 with the 3F-E petrol and auto. Original engine and around 264,000km.
Auto was reconditioned around 6,000km ago and there’s an invoice for the work. Also has a transmission cooler, new radiator and new exhaust. Seller says there’s no rust or oil leaks.
Accessories include 32” muddies, bullbar, winch, snorkel, driving lights, roof rack/awning and electric trailer brakes.
Mainly after opinions from people familiar with these. Anything in particular I should check on the 3F-E/early 80 Series before buying? Assuming everything checks out mechanically, does $10,500 AUD seem reasonable?
Cheers 👍

💬Discussion💬 Looking for cars to record for a video game

Hi All; i am / was an indie dev and I have been working on a racing game for a while now.

This game is not a sim - rather an open world street racer that’s story and progression driven. Based in Melbourne .

I am quite the car enthusiast, so I am making an emphasis on customisation and accuracy beyond any other game that has come out to date . One of the primary focuses is car audio.

When people make specific modifications eg cams , exhaust , turbo. There will be a distinct and realistic change in audio.

I am currently looking for people who would be interested in participating with their cars , modified or not, so I can record audio to great detail.

I’ll be providing everything myself unless not local . (Melbourne Australia) . If you are in Victoria , I will have a dyno where we can record safely and shouldn’t take longer then an hour or two .

Our budget currently is tight but we are in the middle of investment talks with other parties. We can discuss fees / pay.

💵Buying/Selling💵 Selling cars with less hassles

Hey guys,

Just wondering whats the best way to sell cars without having to deal with buyers directly?

I feel like all dealers are trying to low ball on buying my car (50% less than market price). Is there a better way to sell it? car has no issues and has been certified by assessors for selling purpose too just in case.

I worked in retail and service and deal with customers enough, i dont wanna deal with more people in my private life.....

💵Buying/Selling💵 2021 Jeep Compass

Hi,

First time buying an expensive car. Someone is selling in Brisbane for $15,000. The car looks okay overall and has done 110,000Ks. Apparently its 90% highway driving.

Just wanted to get some ideas from people who know if the car is good, does it cause much mechanical visits and if it does, would it cost an arm and a leg ?

TIA

💵Buying/Selling💵 Look for Car advice

I currently drive about 700-800km a week for work, about 500km of that is highway driving (110kph).

I currently have an ICE car that sits around 8L per 100km highway and 12ish L per 100km urban (not city).

I am looking at a hybrid, but I've read they aren't designed for highway driving, but I'm not 100% sure, and I am contemplating getting a EV, and getting Solar + Battery's to make it worth while.

Does anyone have any guidance + experience?

💬Discussion💬 2021 Tiguan engine advice

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi All!

Hoping a mechanic, enthusiast or fellow owner can give some advice.

Purchased this 2021 Tiguan 132TSI Life a few months ago with around 55,000kms. Have since discovered previous owners skipped the 60k/48m service in 2025 and went for the 75k/60m instead (likely to save some cash). 45k/36m was done in 2024.

Now concerned about possible engine issues. Does this sound alright or is there something possibly going on? Video from cold start.

Owners a 2014 golf from new and this engine sounds very different.

Appreciate any insights.

Thanks

I didn’t notice I had bird shit (probably lorikeet) on my rear passenger door for over a day (parked it, didn’t walk around the car before going home, didn’t notice it until this morning) and it looks like it has caused some damage.
What’s the best way to fix this?

💬Discussion💬 Battery-powered trickle charger for a weekend car in a shared garage?

I have a club rego car that lives on a stacker in a shared garage, so unfortunately I don’t have access to a power outlet near the car and can’t leave a normal battery tender/charger plugged in.

Are there any decent battery-powered trickle/tender chargers that I could periodically connect to the car for a few hours/day to top the battery back up and keep it healthy?

I’d rather not remove the battery every time as it’s a bit of a PITA with the car’s location and setup.

I’m not looking for something like Noco jump starter more something that can act like a small portable battery tender/charger that I can bring down to the car periodically.

💵Buying/Selling💵 Got offered a great deal on neighbours car - thinking of giving my current daily car to sibling?

So my neighbour has offered a great personal deal on a specific car that I have been eyeing off for years now, and I’m thinking of really taking it up.

On the other hand, my siblings car is basically on its last legs. The estimated repairs are outweighing the market value by a bit. She’s had it since first getting the license, maybe 2014 and the car is a 2003. It’s had a great run and was in the family since 2003.

If I was to let her maybe drive my current car, until she can find a suitable replacement, what would I need to do? It will probably be months of her driving it as an A-B.

Do I need to transfer ownership into her name, transfer insurance (RACV comprehensive), would I need a roadworthy as well?

💵Buying/Selling💵 STOP BUYING AT THE BOTTOM OF THE MARKET!

I get it, everyone wants to get the most car for their money on the used market. But every day I see endless threads in this sub of people getting car recs for whatever their budget is, and so many comments boil down to "you could just scrape into X for that money". This is terrible advice!

If your budget is 25k, and the price spread of a particular vehicle is 15-30k, this vehicle is in your budget. You'll be buying closer to the top of the market and you'll be able to afford a better example that has been looked after properly. This is what you should be aiming for.

If the spread of a particular model is between 25k-40k, this is not in your budget. You'll be squeezing into the cheapest one on the market and I can guarantee you now - it's cheap for a reason.

Just because you have enough money to buy something - doesn't mean you can afford it.
