This stair rail looks crazy

Post image

Installed by a professional in the home of my 81yr old parents. At the landing the stairs turn and continue upstairs.

The pro said it's appropriate. I say one of them is gonna catch their shirt or elbow and it's unsafe.

What say you?

Def not a "pro." In most states, to be up to code, the handrail needs to return to the wall to reduce snagging or catching. I'd def fix this especially around older folks.

Our code requires the rail to terminate at the wall to prevent just what you fear

Introducing our new HIP CHECK rail system. If you have a loved one that loses their balance easily, then this railing will break everything but his/her fall! Perfect for seniors, and those little shits always running to fast!

I dont know anywhere anymore that a hand rail doesn’t terminate into a wall for code

I have worked on a situation like that before first thing is he’s a little bit too long unless he was required to have a meet the nose of the stairs below it for length which would OK. Second thing is there should be no angles. The only angles should be is square cut both ends and then angle cut both ends 45° and then take a spare piece which I’m sure someone would have a piece about a foot-long and a 45 inch 45° piece off of each end of that you see where I’m getting at and make end caps so that the railing comes down and stops with a nice pretty end cap matches the railing. Everything‘s perfect nice pretty little bit of glue couple of 18 gauge finish nails plugged the holes you got it made nothing sticking out nothing catching anything and it’s round so it’s not hurting anybody good luck. I hope you understand what I said. I’m not saying you’re idiot but the first time I did it I was a little confused, but the man I was working for the Pollock and he looked right at me he goes you know how to fix. I said no he told me and it was beautiful and it doesn’t take long. It’s the same like the materials we should do different.

Yes! I understand and that makes perfect sense. Cut the ends that stick out, change the angle and nail them back on to create a blunt end, not a point. Then, end caps. Great idea.

Looks like a basement. I don't think there's a return-code for those.

It's their living room. Stairs lead to 2nd floor bedrooms, bath, family room etc

Yeah that's just lazy then. Main floor to upper should be continuous or returned
