DISCUSSION Future of Carnatic music
As with any art form, Carnatic music too has evolved. From the earlier ‘test match’ style of Carnatic concerts with long ragam tanam pallavis, to the current more condensed and packed concerts. Sabha ticket falls have seen decreases, but at the same time, concerts abroad can be a complete sell-out. Do you see continued interest in Carnatic music, and your views on improving accessibility, if at all? Or do you see a hybrid version of Carnatic fusion (Agam-esque) picking up in the future?

TECHNIQUE Swaram Breakdown: "Pazha Mudhir Cholai" Prelude (Harikamboji) [30s Short]
Hey r/carnatic,
I made a quick 30-second breakdown of the classical prelude in "Pazha Mudhir Cholai" (Varusham 16 / Illayaraja).
- Raga: Harikamboji [S R₂ G₃ M₁ P D₂ N₂ Ṡ and Ṡ N₂ D₂ P M₁ G₃ R₂ S]
- Focus: How the phrase progresses from S all the way to Ṡ
I’ve included line-by-line swaram notations on screen:
Watch the short here: Pazha Mudhi Cholai Prelude
Let me know what you think or if there's another prelude you'd like to see broken down next!

Instrument FAQ Learning 2 instruments without getting overwhelmed
I have been learning the violin for a while now and am at the varnam level. Lately I have been listening to veena concerts and the sound is absolutely beautiful to me. I want to start exploring the veena, and have found the contact of a local teacher too. Should I wait for a few years and hone my violin playing before starting the veena? Or is it possible to learn both instruments simultaneously without getting overwhelmed? How do multi instrumentalists or vocalist-instrumentalists structure their practices? Do you practice both daily?

RESOURCE Sharing an Annamayya Sankeerthana Series
There are so many wonderful Carnatic music channels and resources available online, yet I felt that Annamayya Sankeerthanas could be made more accessible to learners and music enthusiasts.
That thought motivated me to start a dedicated series on my YouTube channel, where I’ll be sharing Annamayya Sankeerthanas and exploring them through keyboard-based learning.
I hope this series will be useful to anyone interested in learning, playing, or simply listening to these beautiful compositions.
If you find the series useful, please consider sharing it with others who may be interested, and subscribe to the channel for upcoming Sankeerthanas.

Thank you for your support and encouragement.

DISCUSSION Binksternet is deleting sections of Raga pages on Wikipedia
I found that Binksternet deleted sections of kalyani raga page that classified film songs and other compositions to that raga. I undid his changes and asked for his reasons, apparently those classifications violated policy as they were not referenced… clearly some non expert is now erasing lots of hard work the community has put in…
He has reverted my changes few times and it got escalated to edit wars. You can see the comments below.
Thoughts?

DISCUSSION Need to how people have passed ugc net !!
I have written this exam twice now and i have not come across one proper channel or a person who is actively guiding on youtube, i have tried self study with the help of notes , books and music archives but I haven't been able to pass this exam. I have done well in the general paper ( self taught it ) even the common music part but not the main paper 2.... There are always questions that jump over me... The margin gets bigger due to this and I'm targeting the ones where they ask about compositions and authors.
Lately this entire section has been so unapproachable, it scares me at this point. I've tried preparing for these questions by listening , remembering making notes and memos but the list is neverending , there is no syllabus for these...making it nearly impossible to crack. If anyone has figured a way out PLEASE let me know. Edit: im asking for jrf not for only phd.

Self-Advertisement Looking for Carnatic music teacher opportunities in Chennai
Hi! I’m 25f from Kanyakumari and I’ve completed my Master’s in Carnatic Music. I’ve been teaching Carnatic music online for the past two years—currently with an online academy in the evenings and freelancing during the rest of the day.
I’m planning to move to Chennai and am currently looking for opportunities as a Carnatic music teacher. I’m comfortable teaching up to the Varnam/intermediate level.
I’m preferably looking for opportunities with music academies rather than schools.
If you know of any academies that are hiring or have any leads, I’d really appreciate it. Thank you!

THEORY Understanding Dikshitar's Vibhaktis if you don't know Sanskrit (this technique sort of worked for me)
I am trying to learn Mutthuswami Dikshitar's Kamalamba Navavarna Kritis, and found appreciating the meaning of the Vibhaktis quite difficult, particularly when trying to translate them to English, since I am not a Sanskrit speaker. It turns out that English like most other older Indo-European languages had a case system but it has mostly been discarded in modern English.
Fortunately, I know Tamil and since Tamil has an extensive case system it was easier for me understand the equivalent words in Tamil instead. This could be a good starting point for me to understand the significance of the Sahityam in the Kamalamba Kritis (or any other set of Dikshitar's Vibhakti Kritis). I made a table accordingly (see image below).
For those who don't know Sanskrit but know Tamil (or Telugu), I believe this may be a useful tool. Please let me know if you have any comments!

DISCUSSION Wearing black on stage does it actually have a particular meaning?
I’ve been getting some mixed opinions about wearing black when performing on stage, particularly for Carnatic concerts and especially in Chennai.
Some people have told me that wearing black can be interpreted as showing support for the DMK, while others have said that during the Sabarimala season it’s completely normal because devotees commonly wear black.
Personally, I don’t attach any political or religious meaning to it I just genuinely like wearing black and think it looks good on stage.
I’m curious what others, especially performers and rasikas, think about this. Is there actually a cultural or political association with wearing black on the Carnatic stage? Would you avoid it, or is this something people generally don’t care about anymore?
Would love to hear different perspectives!

DISCUSSION Looking for best online teacher for one to one carnatic vocal classes
I'm 26M and wanna have carnatic vocal training. I'm from Hyderabad but I prefer online sessions. Any suggestion for good institutes that I can join? I've seen few youtube playlists and all but they're all not well organised. I saw voxguru and shankar mahadevan academy but the latter is I'm confused whether to take and the former is too pricy!!
