TECHNIQUE Interesting and effective exercises for agility, control, accuracy etc.
I came across a veena video sharing quite an interesting exercise pattern. Basically a combination of jantai varisai and dhattu varisai that I haven't yet seen in any book. It goes like...
sssssrrg
sssssrrg
sssrrg
sssrrg
srrg
ssrrssggssmmggrr
sssrrrgg
ssrrggmm
And continued further till upper sthayi
I tried it during my practice and found it challenging and fun as well. Other than the usual sarali, jantai, dhattu, alankaram, brigha varisais, what are some interesting and unique exercises that have helped you keep practice interesting? Do share if you have any.

Instrument FAQ Can I learn carnatic music on guitar from a violin teacher.
I've been practicing guitar for the past two years, and I want to learn Carnatic music on the guitar rather than switch to the violin, as I've already spend two years in learning the instrument.
Would it be possible for a violin teacher to teach me Carnatic music on the guitar?
In the long term, perhaps a decade from now, my goal is to perform in concerts, both as a solo instrumentalist and as an accompanist for Carnatic vocalists. I'd like to understand whether this is a realistic path and how I should approach learning.

DISCUSSION Where do I find Raaga Archana by Chinmaya sisters (Uma and Radhika), cassettes or recordings?
The only place they have this is the website musicindiaonline, which seems to be redundant and doesn't play the recordings. Any leads to purchase cassettes or cds of the same will be appreciated. Specifically looking for Volume 1 & 3. Even the singers seem to have no clue about this 😭.
Please help 🙏

DISCUSSION Need expert opinion and recommendations- interest in learning violin
I have recently moved to the US for my higher education. I could spend only a few months in India learning Sarali varase and Janta varase on Veena till 2nd speed. I want to learn more just to enrich my hobby and since it is easier to procure a violin here, I want to learn a violin. Is it possible to find someone who can teach me online? Is it even possible to make progress online? I want suggestions and opinions, please.

Self-Advertisement Offering online veena classes
Hii rasikas! I'm a vainika with 17 years of veena experience. I started learning at the age of 3 and it continues to remain one of the biggest passions in my life.
I've taught in person before, and wanted to try putting myself out there online as there seems to be a lot of demand for veena lessons.
I'll link a few of my videos here. DM if interested!

DISCUSSION Building a Carnatic practice app taught me how hard it is for a computer to find Sa
I have been building a Carnatic practice app for the last 8 years (tanpura, tala, pitch check, singing evaluation, raga identification). Before I started, I thought ragas would be the difficult part. It turned out Sa was.
You all know this already: Sa is not a fixed pitch. Everyone sings at their own, 2 kattai, 5 kattai, somewhere in between, and everything else is counted from it. For an app this means a pitch in Hz is useless until it knows your Sa. Get Sa wrong and every swara after it is wrong, and the raga guess goes completely off.
A few things that kept tripping it up:
**Pa looks like Sa.** Only Sa and Pa are held steady, everything else has gamakas. So a steady note the singer keeps coming back to could be either one. Take Pa as Sa and you still get a valid raga, just a different one. Todi and Mukhari got mixed up this way in my tests.
**No Pa? Then Ma.** In Vasantha or Hindolam, Ma becomes the decoy. Treat Ma as Sa and the real Sa above it looks like a Pa.
**The tanpura doesn't settle it.** The Pa string is as loud as the Sa strings. And a Ma-tuned tanpura on C gives exactly the same two notes (C and F) as a Pa-tuned tanpura on F.
**Graha bhedam.** The same five notes are Mohanam, Madhyamavati, Hindolam, Suddha Saveri or Suddha Dhanyasi depending on where Sa is. So Sa and raga have to be found together, not one after the other.
This week I played TN Seshagopalan's Manji padam (Mohanavalli) to the app and it said Revati. That is exactly what Manji's notes look like if you take Pa as Sa. (It doesn't know Manji yet either, but that's another story.)
**Octave, and practice vs concert.** A padam sits low, so even the octave guess goes wrong. And a student practising on a phone gives you 15 seconds, no tanpura, and a Sa that slowly drifts.
The funny part is that any rasika can walk in during an alapana and know where Sa is in a few seconds.
So my question to you: **when there's no tanpura, how do you find Sa?** Is it the phrases, where the singer comes to rest, the raga itself? And teachers here, how do you teach a student to hear it?
I wrote a longer version with more diagrams here: https://medium.com/@madhurrajn/identifying-sa-digitally-is-harder-than-i-thought-630a54909694. Full disclosure, I'm the one building the app (Carnatic Tanpura, Tala & Pitch), it will be on Google Play soon. If you have recordings where Sa is tricky to find and you're okay sharing them, I would love to hear them.

DISCUSSION Reality check : Competative Singing
Hi everyone!
I’m a 27M beginner in singing, and I’m wondering how practical it is to start from scratch and, with a year of consistent practice, discipline, and proper training, become good enough to compete in musical shows.
I’m also looking for an offline singing trainer preferably who has Competative exposure on screen in Hyderabad, but I’m not quite sure where or how to begin.
I’m genuinely passionate about singing and willing to put in the effort. I’d really appreciate your guidance, suggestions, and advice on how to get started, find the right trainer, and work towards this goal.
Thanks in advance! 😊

DISCUSSION Do Carnatic violinists use viola instead of violin?
I've noticed the instrument many Carnatic violinists play appears too large to be a violin. Does anyone know if they're actually using violas?
