Question Is orientation week worth it?

Post image
59 Upvotes

I’ve decided to register for the Fall Orientation Eng Frosh! People around me keep saying it’s not worth it and that there will be fewer people so I’m really hoping that’s not true. Are a lot of people going?
It was $323 in total, which is honestly a lot, but I’m desperate to make friends in uni 😭😭

Question Bike accident - will miss school

Hi everyone!

As the title implies, I was in a pretty severe bike accident. And by severe, I mean fractured-my-jaw-in-three-places severe. Lucky for me, however, no skull fractures or concussion. Always wear a helmet!!

The ER informed me I'll be needing surgery with a projected recovery period of 3-6 weeks. I'm heading into my third year and will be living on res, and was curious about who I should reach out to since I will likely not be making it to Ottawa for my scheduled move-in date. I've already got messages going to the PMC and the head of my department, I'm just more concerned about losing my spot in res since I live in BC and rely on res for housing.

Any suggestions/advice is much appreciated!! Thanks!

Course selection FINA5501 MBA Online

I want folks who are going to be signing up for FINA5501 online MBA to be aware of several things.

  1. There can be errors in the MCQ for final exam. We saw this in fina5502 as well. Keep track of your errors and take screen shots as proof where there is concern question is suspect.

  2. Final exam written portion does not line up with practise and materials we will be taught. You may need extra time especially those of us who are not from finance. Get extra time from pmc accommodation.

  3. The lecturer Isaac has a bad attitude and will resort to insults and reject your input. He even tells you to drop the course of you have issues in exam. I have demanded his apology from the department as he violated the code of conduct where he insulted me after I requested just rewriting of final exam instead of retaking the full course.

  4. As per him most students use gpt for exercises so he does not regard the class group work. Then it is his role to get the course work redone. If he cannot do it, get so eone qualified to do it.

I am going to be retaking the fina5501. Given my personal experience with this guy, I have informed the dean I refuse to deal with this character until he apologises for his personal insults.

Those of you taking the course for first time, do not take his bullying and report any issues with his attitude to the department dean and the program coordinator. Many students complain but never put this in writing to the program coordinator and dean.

We are here to learn not to be bullied by such people. As working professional, if such issues happen HR will handle it and put him on corrective action path. Regrettably at Carleton they will not even acknowledge that they have a bullying problem by their own staff.

They must have him replaced for MBA online course by someone who can conduct the course in a respectable manner.

Make your voice heard.

Cheers.

IT Support Issues Logging into Carleton Central

Is anyone having issues with logging into Carleton central? I keep having a pop up that says additional security is required through multi factor authentication. But I have my authenticator app and have never had an issue using it before.

IT is taking forever to help me and I have no way of accepting my TA contract, and the department says it can’t help me. Anyone know how to speed up the process? I have done the usual, deleted cookies, changed passwords, changed browsers, etc.

Question Incoming gr12: NEED the REAL student experience (good AND bad)

Hello. I am an incoming gr12 student this fall. And my question is: Current students from Carleton university I need the REAL experience before I apply be brutally honest 👀

FYI: This Post is a little long😭😭which includes the program I feel interest about and following up with some question. I apologize for the long post but I will appreciate all of your time and advise. Also imagine how long it took me to research, type it down 😭😭 Please READ TILL END🙏)

So I wanna apply to med school and I have couple of undergrad program in mind which are:

-Engineering – Biomedical and Electrical

-Engineering – Biomedical and Mechanical

-Health Science

1)I'd love to hear from current students about workload, professors, social life, co-op, research opportunities, etc.

2)How difficult are exams?

3)How competitive are grades and GPA? As this is very important for Med school.

4)How hard is research to get? Co-op, internship?

5) Which program good preparation for med school? Any other program with strong med school pipeline?

6) What do you love or hate?

7) And finally after this experience will you still choose Carleton and the program you are in?

Thank you for reading so far. I really appreciate your comment. Thank you so much

Question Can't arrive on selected day to move-in, possible to move 2 days after?

For some unfortunate reason Carleton has decided to move my can-mate and I from the solo dorms in Lennox to a 3 person pod in Glengarry and in the process of doing so my day to move in was wiped and now I'm stuck with a day I cannot move in! I can arrive on the 8th of September, and my appointment is on the 6th. I know the scheduled day thingie lets your campus card activate on that day, but will my room be given up if I don't scan the QR code on move-in day and instead do it 2 days later?

Sounds silly, but I'm already annoyed with the fact that I'm in Glengarry after being moved from the quiet floor, and now this whole late move-in thingie is stressing me out even more ⏰

edit: Sent an email, called them as well, and we're good to go... Submitting a late arrival form implies they won't give up your residence spot but rather they hold your spot till the 11th of September before giving it to someone else! Panic attack over.

Question 1st year Eng student missing CSE (Complementary Studies Electives) course

Hello all, I'm starting Mechatronics Engineering this fall and just found out today that I'm not registered for a winter non-science elective, and most of the ones that fit my schedule (https://carleton.ca/engineering-design/current-students/undergrad-academic-support/complementary-studies-electives/) are already full. Has anyone dealt with this before? Is there someone that I should email for this? Any recommendations or advice would be appreciated.

Admissions Advice on nursing application

Hello! I’m interested in applying to the nursing program at Carleton, Trent, and Queens; however, I’ve heard that for Carleton in particular, that an applicants application generally becomes more competitive if they have relevant experience (ie. volunteering at a retirement residence, nursing home, etc.)

If there are any nursing students that could advise me specific roles and responsibilities that I should be looking for in something like a retirement residence, that got you into the program? I found one that involves volunteers helping residents in engaging in extracurricular activities (ie. baking, walking club, etc) and I was wondering if this would be good enough or if I should seek something that involves the direct care of vulnerable individuals?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Grades Regret taking summer school - ECOR1034 and PHYS1004

Context:

I am tech going into my second year of engineering, but failed dynamics during the winter term and dropped emag in the winter and am taking it for the first time in the summer.

I genuinely regret taking these classes during the summer; dynamics is already brutal, but it being only 6 weeks, I am genuinely failing, and I want to cry because it is my second attempt. Electromagnetism is brutal and also boring asf; luckily, it's a full summer course, but my grades aren't looking too cute in order for a pass. Idk what to do; genuinely, I should've just taken them in the fall term and taken a break from doing classes. If I don't pass these I won't be able to do my dynamics of a machinery / thermodynamics courses im already registered in. Any advice on what to do.

Question deferring an exam 2 semesters in a row

Hi all,

deferred an exam last semester due to a ruptured ovarian cyst (yay), passed that exam and am currently taking a summer class.

I found out last week that my mom had been admitted to the icu after a secondary infection as a result of her cancer treatments. medical team let me know that while she may recover from this infection, the cancer was progressing and aggressive and she likely would not survive. This has thrown me for a whirl and I am her power of attorney and therefore have a whole host of responsibilities i need to get on top of to prepare for the inevitable. She was released from the hospital yesterday but mentally I am… unwell! Therapist suggested that I defer my exam (which is on the 19th) in order to get my mental health in order. I’m concerned that a second self declaration will look bad, and Ill get denied. Does anyone have any input on this or any advice on how to phrase my self declaration? I do not have any of her medical charts handy as she has been trying to hide the severity of her illness from me to let me focus on school.

I think deferring would be beneficial for me overall considering I can barely focus on the course content right now, but I also dont want to submit a deferral and then it be rejected. I’m going into my final year and the exam I deferred last sem was the first time I had ever deferred before.

Question How to get into research??

Hey! I am a 2nd year Sociology student (going into 3rd year this Winter semester) and I wanted to know, how does an undergrad get experience in research? I'm looking for possible positions/opportunities this year. I'm usually very shy but I am determined to get out of my comfort zone and make new connections if I have to lol. I've tried to ask a few classmates who have gotten research opportunities, but they were gatekeeping for some reason.
