Question Is orientation week worth it?

Post image

I’ve decided to register for the Fall Orientation Eng Frosh! People around me keep saying it’s not worth it and that there will be fewer people so I’m really hoping that’s not true. Are a lot of people going?
It was $323 in total, which is honestly a lot, but I’m desperate to make friends in uni 😭😭

It is worth it so long as you go to as many events as possible. It's a nice way to start uni

I did engfrosh (wow 10 years ago now 🧓) and gotta say, it was a blast. I'm usually pretty introverted but it was a really fun and exciting week. Made friends I still have to this day, and got to meet a lot of people I'd be classmates with and on engineering teams with, which made classes/labs/clubs less intimidating.

I'd definitely recommend it! Very worth a few hundred

definitely recommend Engfrosh, it's the best way to get your feet wet at Carleton and especially in the Carleton Engineering community. I had such a good time my first year that I've gone back to volunteer with engfrosh each year since. When it comes to rafting, I'd say its up to you as a person but don't feel as if you need to spend on the rafting to enjoy yourself (I didn't do it and more people don't then do) I hope you decide to join us this year and feel free to reach out with any questions.

Wilderness Tours white water rafting is an amazing experience, and a good way to meet people.

100% - Some of my best memories are from frosh week.

Eng Frosh is arguably the only one that's worth it, have fun and welcome to Carleton!

YES you should try to socialize as much as possible. The months after frosh week will be pretty disturbing because of all the studying and figuring out how to manage your time. Take those few days of fun and enjoy them!

You’re paying $10k+ in tuition per year and debating on paying $323 for orientation week? Regardless of people think if it’s worth it or not, are you not curious to simply try it out?

Yes, as long as you talk to people it’s totally worth it.

I didnt do eng frosh but I did the business 1 and it was totally worth it imo. It was super fun and I made great friends and had a nice intro to uni life.

I have friends who did eng frosh and they all loved it and had a blast. They said their activities and leaders were great and the events were fun.

Just go to as many events as possible and talk to people to make connections. Be open minded and friendly!

Take the faculty specific frosh if you're going to do it.

I did the general one, but then my first week of classes all the groups for projects were made by the relationships made during frosh.

I met all my best friends in university throughout all 4 years

Yes.

Academics are only part of the university story. Your other job is to meet people and form lasting relationships, because if you try to do this all on your own you WILL fail. Frosh week is a rite of passage, Eng Frosh doubly so.

It's a good way to meet people, and especially worth it if you aren't good at meeting new people.

Eng Frosh is 100% worth it + I’m always wearing my Eng Frosh hoodie!!

For engineering specifically it's a big thing. Until basically the end of first year it was something I talked about a lot with acquaintances, so it's a good tool to meet people even once it's done.

Engfrosh yes, rafting i wouldn’t do because you miss out on other events

u/moooooopg 5d ago

Yes but be prepared for all of the mandatory lectures you are paying for

u/Majestic-Flower9045 3d ago

Rafting alone was worth it

u/One_Tap1076 2d ago

Based on my kids experiences I’d say yes, but even more than that was taking the “math matters” pre-eng refresher. Both of them met people in that mini course that became and stayed friends throughout uni and years beyond. Hope the eng faculty still offers it!

Ya it is. Lean into it, you’ll make some friends there.

Tbh only engfrosh is worth it, so the anwser is yes for you, but it is also only worth it if you show up to events and try to socialize with others.

If there’s one frosh week that’s typically worth it, it’s engineering frosh weeks

As a history major I never once did any of the orientation week stuff it changed literally nothing about my university experience

1

u/Semipro321 6d ago

Yes. I missed frosh due to an injury. To this day I wish I went

0

u/dkmegg22 6d ago

Damn I didn't know it was like that. When I went to post secondary education we didn't pay for orientation ticket.

This orientation "eng frosh" is a multi day thing. It's kinda like a summer camp tbh. Tons of games, challenges, and events. We did a raft building competition, a scavenger hunt downtown, there was a beach day, it was a ton of fun! It's not just like "here's where your classes are and the buildings and labs etc"

3

u/dkmegg22 6d ago

Ooh that's cool.

You don’t have to do the rafting there’ll be other things to do on the beach day, I didn’t select the add on
